I wouldn't let Martinez spend another penny in the transfer window. The squad is good enough to stay up. They just need proper organisation, square pegs in square holes, belief and a leader on the pitch. Seems obvious. Delivering it is another matter.

Square pegs in square holes is exactly right. The players don't seem to know where they will be playing each week. We have forwards on right of midfield, 3 potential number 10's picked and squeezed into the team at the expense of cohesion. Confidence has now dropped because of it. Gareth Barry needs to get hold of a game with a more balanced team on the pitch. A return to fitness from Osman would help. or even play McGeady ahead of Barkley, Naismith or Eto'o in that right side position. Trying to accommodate Eto'o, Barkley and Naismith takes away our right sided threat and puts all the pressure on the left to deliver. Teams press us high and Baines can't get forward so we look like we will never score a goal even for our 60 odd percent possession that we usually have.

{Ed025's Note - play mcgeady before barkley?..im not ross,s biggest fan degsy, but thats taking the piss mate!..

Dont play mcgeady things aren't that bad yet. He is up there with the worst I've seen including nyarko.

Yes Ed. I would play McGeady before Ross. Ross is obviously a better all round player. But McGeady is a wide right sided player. This is what I think Tedster is on about. Square pegs in square holes. Look at the teams through the season that RM has picked. Early on when McGeady and Osman were fit, we did ok. Then when Osman got injured and McGeady lost form and confidence (coz he is hot a bad player overnight), RM began tinkering by trying Eto'o or Ross or Naismith on the right. none of which worked. He even put Lukaku there for a game I think? Anyway, that also allowed him to put either of the other two as the traditional number 10. So in effect we had two number 10's and another on the bench. For some reason people seem to forget the work that the likes of Osman, McGeady, Pienaar and that type of player do. They link the defence to the forwards. Holding onto the ball turning and bringing the overlapping fullbacks into play. No disrespect to the 3 mentioned above, but they are used to either doing it further up the pitch or being more direct. Out of all the players mentioned. to me it is a no brainer. Osman is the best adapted. So far we have played 20 games and won 5. Osman played in 4 of them. He has only played in 1 losing league game. I know Swan and a few others do not like me going on about him, but please look at the stats. We have won 1 game in 20 without Leon Osman!! That was against QPR. It is not because Osman is brilliant. It is because we don't have anyone better to play that role on my opinion. People talk about getting rid of players. I would rather get more players in!

Degsypulford

{Ed025's Note - mcgeady has not become a bad player overnight degsy...he has always been crap!, pienaar is finished as well imo mate..

That's unfair on him Ed. He has looked ok in the past. He has just lost confidence lately. You know from my past posts he has never been my favourite player, but he is at least a right sided square peg that can fit into a right sided square hole. I would prefer Osman of course. but I would also prefer Angel De Maria or Andros Townsend. Both of whom work extremely hard and link the defence to the attack. But what's the chance of either of them now?

Degsypulford

{Ed025's Note - no chance degs..

To have a positive balanced side you must persevere with either Atsu and McGeady.

Tedster

{Ed025's Note - i do like balance tedster, but its got to be achieved with better quality than them 2 for me mate..get the cheque book out bill..

He would just go for Moses or McManaman.

Tedster

Come on Degsy. McGeady has to be the worst of Martinez's signings (and he never played for Wigan unlike Robles). Let's start the search for a new manager as quickly as possible before he's given the chance to squander any more of the money in our coffers which would be an attraction to a new boss.
