This one should set the cat amongst the pigeons. I have read a few posts down below and said a few things myself. Last season I was so pleased with the way things were going. I had believed that Moyes was maybe not as good as I previously thought and RM was in fact a breath of fresh air and we had needed change. I will list a few things that were said and see if we all agree that we were right: Moyes played boring football and put too much emphasis on free kicks and corners. Moyes held back Ross Barkley and the younger players and RM was giving them an opportunity to blossom. RM had introduced a much more footballing way of playing and it was much better to watch. Signings like Barry, McCarthy, Lukaku, Kone, etc would only strengthen the squad. Right now I think we have gone a long way backwards and I hate to say it, but I am beginning to think we do need a change in manager. Relegation is written all over my thoughts. I hope I am wrong again.

{Ed025's Note - heres my take on it for what its worth degsy...moyes DID play boring football, bobby WAS a breath of fresh air, his signings HAVE strengthened the side, moyes WAS right to emphasize dead ball situations, and DID hold back the youth to his detriment...

. what we need is a manager who can mix it up when needed & play different styles to accommodate the opposition. & funnily enough that's what all the greatest managers do (e.g. - Mourinhio, Ferguson, Ancelotti etc etc). & guess wot? These men have won things, simple really!! Problem with Bobby is he only knows 1 way to play & has no plan b! He needs to learn to adapt or else he'll have to go as it will drag our beloved team down & down to where they don't belong!

Sorry but in the last 3 matches have not been playing a more mix and match style. has RM not taken on board what the player have been saying and given them more freedom to play in the style they want? It may have been a long time coming but I think he has learnt that we are not Barca. When we are at our strongest we are a pretty good side. I do agree that players have been played out of position and its not worked but we have what we have. Its not great at the moment but I can see some positives RM does seem to be on learning curve hopefully he realises that the set piece is very important and we will start to get back to where we where under DM once we have that sorted I think we will be fine.

Totally agree sa, effectively we have drew our last 3 games and been playing a lot better. Let's just keep positive and see how the next 2 games go before we continue with this Martinez out posts.
Interestingly if he did get sacked who's would you realisticly want to replace him?

This is a very interesting subject, but it is not as clear cut as fickle fans turning on the manager.

First off I would like to say that last season I like most others was full of praise for el Bob and the difference in how we played, now like a lot of others I would welcome a change, this change of opinion is not a knee jerk reaction to poor results, it is a genuine fear (one I did hold before we appointed him based on his performance at Wigan) That he may well be out of his depth in terms of managing a big club with big hopes and expectations.

Lets be honest here, and no offence to Wigan or their fans, but avoid relegation and a decent cup run was a successful season for them, and yes once that was us too, but that was long ago and thanks to the good work of Moyes is now a distant memory. We do expect more than that a lot more! For the record I do not want Moyes to return, I think he had taken us as far as he could and it was time for a change, but credit where it is due, he saved us back in the dark days and give us a half decent and stable team.

Now let's take a look at last season, before he left Moyes had set up the preseason, once el Bob signed he went off to do his TV thing on the Copa America, so no chance to change things around and too busy to do so. So we had a Moyes preseason and his defensive doctrine fresh in the mind of the same back 5.

The first three games of the season we looked a bit shaky but new Manager and all that, then he signed Barry, he added a bit of steel in the middle and off we went. Towards the end of the season the signs were already there that some teams had found us out, Palace at home, Southampton away for example. I wonder what the result at the KC on the last day would have been if Hull had not had the cup final? But all in all a good season, good points tally and European Football again, we all thought onwards and upwards!

Then we get to this season, amateur preseason (from which we have never really recovered.) El Bob off to do his TV thing yet again, and the total dross we have been served up, nearly every team in the League knows if they press us high up the field we will make a mistake and buckle.

Now we get to the important part, the last three games, heart, passion and fight from the players, a sign of a revival and hope that we have turned the corner. Some people are praising el Bob for listening to the players, but is that really the case? Some have suggested that the players are doing it off their own bat, being a mere mortal I don't know either way, so all I can comment on is what I see with my own eyes.

On Saturday, Bainesy cleared long down the left, El Bob went ballistic, Bainesy ignored him. Tuesday early on, John Stones try's to play it out from the back and gets mugged, except for a quick reaction from Robles and the fact Andy Carroll is a yard dog would have been 1-0 down, el Bob applauds (not sure if it is the save or the fact Stones tried to play it out.) few minutes later Coleman gets to a punt down the channel first and puts in row Z, el Bob's reaction, starts to scream and do daft hand gestures. Shortly before the sending off, Barry plays a 45 yard diagonal pass towards Rom, el Bob stands there shaking his head with a face like a smacked backside. Make of that what you will, but to me it looks more like he is being ignored than he listened and gave his blessing to a change.

And this is the crux of the matter, and is one we simply can not ignore, we all like to be positive, but the warning signs are there, Eto'o is about to walk away after 6 months, reportedly taking a 40% pay cut to do so, at the very least that says there is a problem behind the scenes.

If the Manager has agreed to change the style (After repeatedly saying on camera he wouldn't) Then fair play to him, we support him and review things in the summer, if on the other hand the players have taken things into their own hands, well that is a totally different situation. The question has to be why? Are they just over paid prima-donna's who think they know best? Or do they care about our club as much as we do and are doing the only thing they can to save it?

So my question in this is this. Is a manager who takes over half a season to realize his tactics don't work any more and needs the players to point it out to him really the man to be in charge of our club? And that is the best case scenario remember, at worst we are talking player revolt. Which if el Bob holds on to the end of the season he will simply sell the "trouble makers" as he sees them and replace them with poor quality yes men who will do it his way no matter what!

Wedgewood

Well to replace him would have been Pulis but that ship has sailed. Bill is not a pro-active Chairman and Martinez not a pro-active Manager that is the problem. I have a question for all of you, if Bill hired him on his CV, exactly what tried and trusted formula did Roberto bring with him?

DuncsMum

In fairness ed in moves last couple of seasons I think we played some very decent stuff at times. Although we could play very direct at times and utilised set pieces we also knocked it about nicely at times. Baines and pienaar had some very nice combo play. No doubt we play far more expansive football under Martinez but we are know here near as defensively sound. I don't think we should underestimate our teams ability to play football under moyes. Moyes defence and bobs attack last year would do nicely for me.

BlueClarkey

{Ed025's Note - and me clarkey mate..

Simples Bill get on the phone to moyes to come back, he can work on set pieces and defending in the morning and Roberto to work on possession and attacking in the afternoon. Easy as that champions next season.

last season a thought we played some of the best football we had played in years - somethings happened no doubt about it

not to mention our players are all a year older and still getting a game , he needs some balls to drop players this is just my opinion but

coleman
baines
gareth barry should all be dropped , not been good enough. put browning garbutt and barkley in there positions be something like

robles
browning jags stones garbutt
besic barkley
mirallas naismith mcgeady
lukaku

thats a cracking young team with jags as the leader. I know there's no comparison for the spl and english league but mcgeady was a left winger for celtic and he was really good , I fell put him out there if its not working switch him with mirallas

Well I did start the ball rolling there. I have to say, I actually thought we played some lovely football in Moyes' last 2 seasons. Prior to that we were a bit iffy. If you all remember back, a lot of our football revolved around Baines whipping crosses in from the corner flags after over lapping runs. Not too different from what we try to do now (unsuccessfully). We also defended and scored from corners and free kicks a lot better than now. Do I want RM sacked.well no not really. I would love him to turn it round and get us climbing up the table. And now the most important question.am I as relaxed as some posters on here who seem to think we have already turned the corner? Not a bit! Our form now looks like the beginning of the season or even times last season when we were not too successful. That is we flatter to deceive. We have 60% possession. We get corner after corner and waste them all. We knock it around for ages making no forward penetration. We then lose possession, make a rash challenge or give away a corner. The other team scores. We then battle away for ages, throw caution to the wind and scrape a draw. We did it last season and at the beginning of this one. Then we lose a couple. So the overall points tally is around 3 points from 5 games. Of course I am talking generally here. But until we start winning again, I will not be happy at all. No team gets a prize for looking better. They get points for winning games. We have won a total of 3 in 13 and one of them was against Lille! One was against West Ham that we should have lost and the other was against QPR who had not taken a single away point all season. All 3 goals were deflections too! Jeez, the more I look at it, the more worried I get!
