Am I right. We win Europa League and are straight through to Champions League group stages. Reds finish 4th and qualify for Europa League? How positive would that be?

Agree0 Disagree0

I think they will allow 5 teams from England in the CL in that case

England normally have 4 teams in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) - they qualify by being the top 4 in the English Premier League (EPL)
If an English team wins the UCL, but finishes in the top 4 of the EPL, then we still only have 4 teams in the UCL.
However, if an English wins the UCL, but finishes outside the top 4 of the EPL, then they also go into the UCL - so we have 5 teams.
If an English team wins the UEFA Europa League (UEL), they go into the UCL. If they have also finished in the top 4 of the EPL, then England still only have 4 teams in the UCL. If they finish outside the top 4 of the EPL, then they also go into the UCL - so we have 5 teams.
Now here's the other major wrinkle: if English clubs win the UCL and win the UEL, but BOTH finish outside the top 4 of the EPL, then both will be in the UCL along with the top 3 (not top 4) of the EPL. In this situation, the team finishing 4th in the EPL would go into the UEL. (That's the "darkside" scenario the poster mentioned.) So England, who'd normally have 4 teams in the UCL, could have 5 (but no more) teams in that competition.
This season, the English teams still in the UCL (Chelsea and Arsenal) are also likely to finish in the top 4 of the EPL, so the "darkside" scenario (they finish 4th in the EPL, while English clubs outside that top 4 win the the UCL and win the UEL) seems to be a very long shot.
Simples?

Thanks for that Sid,

I didn't know much about the scenario until now.

So either way, if we win Europa, then we get CL.

Sid when Chelsea won the champions league they finished 6th so took spurs place as only 4 from England are allowed in and no more.

How about this what if we get to the final and get beat but the winning team have already qualified for CL through the league.

{Ed025's Note - i suspect it would go to the next highest in the league robbie, but not certain mate..

Bretto: Those used to be the rules when Chelsea took Tottenham's place, but those rules have changed and are now as I have explained. I have taken the information from the UEFA website, so I am absolutely certain of my facts.
:-)

{Ed025's Note - good input again sid...your not after my job are you mate?.. :)

Tar sid

{Ed025's Note - and feather him...if hes after my job.. :)

Robbie: The losing finalists don't get any qualification for Europe just because the winners qualify for Europe by other means.
The same now applies to losing finalists in the FA Cup. Hull City will be the last club to qualify that way.
The losing finalists in the League Cup have never qualified for Europe just because the winners qualified by other means.
Basically, an English club qualifies for Europe by WINNING a cup (Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, or League Cup) or by finishing high enough in the Premier League. There's also a place available for being higher in the "fair play" ratings, but its not often that an English club qualifies by that route.
:-)

Ed025: After your job? Not a chance! I'm happy just to post comments as a mere fan and I'm also happy to relate what I learn from the official UEFA, FA, Premier League, club, etc., websites - just like anyone else could.

{Ed025's Note - its much appreciated sid..cheers..

Sid. You're the man for these facts. Always appreciate your studious search which tbh I'm too lazy to do. Nice one

Thanks sid, imagine the scenario everton v Liverpool in the Europa final. LFC finish in top four and win final what happens to the champions league place then someone has to have it. Would it be 5th place team? I know very unlikely. A better scenario everton beat LFC in final and Liverpool only qualify for Europa in league.

Robbie: Losing cup finalists (be it Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup or League Cup) no longer qualify for Europe - even if the winners have qualified for Europe via their league position.
Only by winning a cup or finishing high enough in the league will a club earn a place in European competition from now on. The rules have changed this season - Hull City will be the last losing finalist to qualify because the winners (Arsenal) already qualified for the UCL via league position.
