Wanted to get peoples opinions on Neville Southall. I sadly never got to see him play, my Dad thinks he is the greatest Goalkeeper to ever live. Was he THAT good? I know he is the greatest Keeper we have ever had. Just when people talk about the best Goalies of all time and in particular British keepers. I always hear Ray Clemence and Peter Shilton, was Southall better? Was he better than Peter Schmeichal?. Do people think he is the best Goalkeeper of all time or is my Dad being a bit biased and he was probably top 10-15? I onow it is about opinions, but, people who watched him, was he better than Shilton, Clemence and Schmeichal and if so, is he truly the greatest Goalkeeper of all time?.

{Ed001's Note - I was wondering why there was a post held on Everton for me, then I saw it. It was only the other night, after Buffon's performance v Man City we were discussing the best keepers we had ever seen on our editor's widget and I said Southall. Clemence was at the end of his career, so I can't compare him with Clem, but Southall was the best I have ever seen. What says a lot for how good he was that he could pick up a MOM award in a game Wales lost 7-0 (I think it was 7, it could have been 107 and wouldn't have flattered Holland that night, but Southall was incredible). Brilliant keeper.}

Agree1 Disagree0

Southall is without a doubt the best keeper I have ever seen unfortunately as we are no longer a big 4 club and he played for Wales he is very rarely mentioned. The guy was absolute world class. I can only describe it like you were starting every game already 1-0 up.

The best I have ever seen along with Scmeichel. I saw a little of Banks who was up there. Banks save against Pele allows him into my top 3.

{Ed001's Note - that was some save, but as it is all I have seen of Banks I can't compare him with Southall who I watched regularly.}

Swan,for me, your dad is not exaggerating, certainly the best goalkeeper I've ever seen on any kind of regular basis, he dominated his area and made incredible saves so often that it just became the norm, it was what was expected of him.

I think the best save I've seen in my life was one he made at Sheffield Wednesday, end of 84-85 season, when we were gunning for the league and they were fighting desperately to stay up. We weren't playing at all well and coming under a lot of pressure second half. I was standing right behind our goal - a cross came in and ex-Red Jack Whitham connected with a point-blank bullet header - shoot, 1-0, we all thought, but just as we were expecting the net to bulge, Nev not only got down low to his right but clawed the ball round the post,right in front of thousands of disbelieving Blues. How could he have saved that? But of course he did and we went on to steal a vital 1-0 win. Any other older Blues out there remember that save?

So, Big Nev, the greatest ever. It was only a poor Welsh team and our European ban in 1985 that prevented him from achieving the international recognition he deserved.

Schmeichel on Seroid

Put it this way. In today's market Nev would be worth a new stadium. Can't think of any other time when I went the match just to watch the keeper. Nutty as a fruitcake but brilliant just the same.

I was a young lad when we won the cup in 95' and his performance in the final is something that will always stand out. One of the best.

18 Sep 2015 11:11:11
best keeper we have had, but Shilton and Schmeichel were also class

18 Sep 2015 12:04:21
if Southall wasn't injured in 86 we would have won the double. Bobby Mimms was in comparison about 3 leagues behind the big man.

Southall is the best there has ever been.

I don't know if anyone watched The Match a charity footy game on TV a few years ago. He was in goal and had a few pounds in weight on him but he produced a save were the ball was going into the top right hand corner. The whole stadium erupted and the commentators purred like cats.

As some have said here, you went to see Everton because of him. A goalKeeper. He was my hero in the 80's and early 90's and when he left I felt sick as many did because we all new we couldn't replace him.

He was the best of his generation and in my opinion the best that's ever been. He used to catch the ball with one hand in some games and you could see the confidence drain from the opposition. He also bounced the ball off the back of Ian Rush's(even though he was our Nemesis) head which brought the house down in a Merseyside Derby.

Above all though he is a blue and one with the biggest of blue hearts. I love the Big Man.

I grew up watching Big Nev. To say that he was the best ever is a big statement, and as you say it is all about opinions. However, you certainly felt safe knowing that he was the last line of your defense and he was worth at least 15 points a season or perhaps more!

I remember in the 95 FA Cup final, albeit old and carrying a few extra pounds he imo helped us win that game. I remember in particular one excellent save from a young Paul Scholes, I believe, that ensured our victory. A class keeper without a doubt an Everton Legend!!

Correct BJU,big Nev was the best of his generation simply the best keeper in the world at the time.The big man was awsome. Two stand out saves that immediately spring to mind for me,1. was the save from a bullet blank range header from Mark Falco at spurs in the title winning year of 84/85 it must of come at him around 200 miles an hour,ok maybe not that fast but a bullet it was,how he managed to tip it over the bar I will never know. 2.Was another header this time from John Barnes at Anfield down at the anfield road end,cant remember the year exactly maybe 87/88.Barnes headed the ball one way and big Nev was sought of going the other way, then seemed to turn his whole body in mid air and fling himself to his left and tip the ball over the bar,unbelievable does anyone else remember that save? its probably on u tube somewhere.The man is a legend.

I rember it well but even Aldridge says in his book the greatest goalkeeper he ever played against or saw he recalls a save from him in the park end the first derby after hillsor ough it finished 0-0 but what a save it was from a corner and Aldridge headed it from about six yards the rest is folklore thanks nevfor some brilliant days I still luv ya wish you were back at the club come on Bk give nev a job let's start a campaign

Best I have seen and I can remember shilton in top form.always say that if we had signed shilton in 1978 we would have won the league with gordon lee. Southall was always worth at least 2 places higher in the league and would have made the diffirence in 1986. Nigel martin was underated aswell but southall was best in the 1984 to 1996 years.

{Ed003's Note - Shilton for me,good shout to put Martyn in there.}

19 Sep 2015 00:00:11
In the 95 FA cup final united put a cross into the box. In the middle of of 2 Everton players a big arm pops up and plucks the ball out of the sky and catches the ball with one hand calm as you like. You knew then we had won the cup.

19 Sep 2015 00:41:04
Southall is the best keeper I've ever seen.legend.

19 Sep 2015 10:31:56
Everton goalkeepers I gave seen include, Dunlop, West, the awful ones including Dai and Lawson. Martyn was good but Southall the best. Banks was brilliant until he lost an eye. Shilton I thought was over-rated. Clemence was ok but occasionally error prone a bit like Gary Sprake. I thought Tommy Lawrence [the flying pig] was a good goalkeeper. I did see Lev Yashin once at Goodison in 1966 he was a colassus but at the end of his career. No big Nev is hard to beat. Schmiecal was very good also.

Just got to add my opinion. when he was young and agile, he was so big you would bank on him making a save in a one on one. He was awesome. Schmeicle is the only one close to him in my opinion. The fact he played on until his 40's says it all. In fact that is probably why he is not remembered by some as the best. but believe me when he was in his 20's, he was the best. ever!
