I think McCarthy does not get enough credit for what he brings to the overall team performance, the amount of mistakes he forces by putting pressure on the other team is amazing! He is constantly hassling and harrying the opposition, wins countless balls back and imo is vital to how we play. His engine is incredible! He like Barry is the kind of player you don't notice till he is not in the team.

Also people say we play with 2 def mids, but in fact Barry generally drops back to create a back 3 allowing our full backs to push on and leaving McCarthy to deal with the centre of the pitch. This happens a lot and is a big part of how we play. He is only disappointing in advanced areas but that's not what he is there for. A very important player imo.

Kone or Naismith for me on best individual performance. McCarthy imo aflm78 gets it spot on. Even when McCarthy doesn't have the ball he does a lot with positional play and keeps the pressure on the opposition.

As aflm78 says we would miss him a lot if he wasn't there. He's still young and will develop into a world class player imo. Does a lot of unthankful work. Has the potential to be as good as Roy Keane was imo.

So I'd prob pick McGeady for most disappointing. There's a good few more I'd pick rather than McCarthy.

I def agree with Del boy as best signing. He's not great at tracking back but as you say Swan that's why we sacrifice 2 positions, Barry and McCarthy. They are 2 defensive midfielders no matter what way you look at it.

The reason them 2 positions are used is to allow the front 4 to attack more. Watching yesterday's game I was very impressed with Del boy. Every game we played with him in the team we are a serious threat going forward. Yes he doesn't track back as much as he should but as I said above that is why we sacrifice 2 other players for, for him to be able to attack more.

Yes he tries to beat his man too many times and at times hits the opposition player with a cross too much. No player is perfect. Apart from them negative's I think Del boy is absolutely fantastic. A real gem. Just hope Barcelona don't buy him back.

He makes us an exciting team. The best has yet to come as well. He has played very little this year. When he gets going he will be unstoppable. Very excited about him.

I get what he offers mate, love McCarthy. Yesterday he got ahead of Lukaku after a 1-2 and nearly could of scored. In Martinez's first season we missed him against Palace when he wasn't there and Barry was alone. That was numbed a bit by Besic coming in when McCarthy was injured last season. In his first season he was getting ahead of Lukaku and when he did get the ball in the final third he was brilliant. Last season and this season he seems less aggressive. He is getting dominated more, would just like to see the same McCarthy from 2 seasons ago that was aggressive, a willing runner and ran games by himself.

I understand what you're saying Swan and sometimes I wish he would take a shot on or play a one-two and look to get beyond their backline especially as he knows Barry is always there to cover him. But I still think he is a great player and very important to our style of play. Btw that wasn't me who pressed 'disagree'. :)

It wasn't me who pressed diagree either Swan. It was only the 2 I mentioned that I'd change from yours. Think your spot on for the rest. I agree with you also he used to be more aggressive. I think around that time your talking about when he was more aggressive he got encouragement to do so by Trappatoni. Then manager of Ireland.

Trap publicly shamed McCarthy into get more stuck in, in games. All Trap said to the press was that he was too nice. Done him world of good and he pressed on from there. He's not as timid as he used to be but your right he's not as aggressive as he was 2 seasons ago. There's room for slight improvement there.

Barkley needs it more if you ask me. Martinez is to much of a nice guy to encourage them to be more aggressive. I'd love if he done what Trappatoni done on McCarthy and just say to the press that both there play is too nice. The whole team would benefit.
