Bretto suggested Flores as a new manager a couple of days ago and didn't get much support. The guy has won the Europa, got to QF of Champions League and he's got flair and a bit of steel in the right proportions. He's doing well in the Prem considering he's managing a newly promoted side. Only problem is he's had about 8 clubs in 10 years, and sometimes leaves in weird circumstances, but still might be a good shout. Would love Koeman or Bilic but realistically I don't know what we're offering that they haven't already got, so I don't see either of those happening. Unai Emery is unlikely but would be a real statement and might be tempted by the Prem. Marcelino of Villareal could be good for us. Lucien Favre, who would have been my favourite to succeed Moyes, is without a club and is brilliant but maybe a bit of a loose cannon. Who would be better AND realistic?

{Ed002's Note - Moyes, Mancini, Poyet.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Moyes won an egg and spoon race when he was 9?

I really do appreciate you realism, Ed. Surely Favre is not beyond us? What about Gourvennec from Guingamp? He's apparently out of contract at the end of the season and has done wonders for them without as far as I've heard attracting the top Champions League clubs? What about Paul Clement? Bizzarely sacked by Derby for doing too well and being too ambitious but great experience.

{Ed002's Note - Lucien Favre would be a great choice - a well respected manager and a really nice guy. Right now I don't know what his plans are but I do know that he has turned down two opportunities, one in the EPL. Whether he will be interested in a job in the summer or not is yet to be seen. Gourvennec would not be a likely option having also turned down an offer from the EPL last summer. However, there is interest in him from a French side. Paul Clement would be another who would be a very good choice in my view. He is a very good coach and again a nice guy.}

Poyet? No, just no. Bad ed. haha.

{Ed002's Note - I think you will find Gus has done OK in his management career.}

25 Mar 2016 13:27:33
I heard that Gourvennec wanted to give Guingamp another year so signed an extension till this summer. That sounded quite noble to me. Are you saying he will stay with them even longer unless a bigger / Champs League club comes knocking, cause that hasn't happened even with all the movement there has been at big clubs.

{Ed002's Note - EAG would like him to stay longer but are aware that there is interest in him from another French side. I expect he will see the season out and consider his options.}

25 Mar 2016 14:02:25
I think Clement would need more experience before we looked at him, it's one thing being an assistant, albeit at one of the biggest clubs in the world, but he hasn't proved too much as the main man as yet. He done quite well at Derby at first but is that enough to give him the job if RM does go? I might be being a bit harsh as the Derby board seem to be a bit trigger happy, possibly too much interference, but I'd like our next manager to have a lot more experience if we are going to step up a level. Should be an interesting summer.

25 Mar 2016 14:05:45
I hope we're one of them. Go out on a limb, Ed. If you were in charge of our club, who would be top of your target list? I'm assuming here that you wouldn't keep Martinez.

{Ed002's Note - One real standout right now is Italian Roberto Stellone and another is German Roger Schmidt.}

25 Mar 2016 14:29:28
Thanks Ed. Not too familiar with them but I'll have a look.

{Ed002's Note - There are a whole bunch of young coaches and managers with growing reputations - in France, Jocelyn Gourvennec as mentioned, Willy Sagnol and Olivier Echouafni have growing reputations. Although not so young, Philippe Montanier is gaining a lot of respect. Spain, the stand out attracting attention is Diego Simeone but he won't be moving. Murat Yakin is one resting after a spell in Russia. The Netherlands has the likes of De Boer and Phillip Cocu. Elsewhere Laudrup, Petrescu, Hutter and Markus Weinzierl are well thought of. I would also not be surprised if Julen Lopetegui and Leonardo Jardim don't get noticed by some of the very high end clubs in the not too distant future. Paulo Sousa (Fiorentina) is getting great press right now but the pick in Italy is Eusebio Di Francesco (Sassuolo) who looks like he will be getting a very good offer at the end of next season.}

Ed I really appreciate your honesty but my question was not only who would be realistic but who would be better. I don't believe any of those would be better than my suggestions, even if you think they are the most likely. Surely Favre is not beyond us when he doesn't have a job? What about Paul Clement, also without a club and bizarrely sacked for being on course to win promotion. He has great experience at Real Madrid and looked good as a manager. My favourite is Jocelyn Gourvennec of Guingamp, whose contract is up this summer and looks like a future great.

{Ed002's Note - I have answered already about each of those.}

Thanks Ed - reat knowledge as ever. I've had a bit of a look at your first suggestions, but while I'm sure Stellone has a great future, he seems a bit inexperienced with less than one season in a top flight competition. I appreciate what he appears to have done with his club, but wouldn't this be a very steep learning curve for him? I've seen Leverkusen but hadn't made the connection with Schmidt. Their style of play is almost the exact opposite of ours and while it might be a very good thing for our team to up the tempo, the players would surely take a while to adapt to his methods. Isn't that a bit risky? Agree totally with Jardim and Di Francesco - would love one of them. De Boer definitely but thought he would be very much a long shot and I understood Cocu was committed for another year - we could be relegated by then!

{Ed002's Note - Stellone is seen by many in the know to be very much on the rise and has really worked wonders with Frosinone.}

Yes I know. I sent this hours ago.

Only had a brief look through the rest of your posts/ comments ed (will enjoy reading it in full now) your knowledge is impressive and realism admirable as you consider things on a factual basis. I just think Poyets style can be a bit abrasive and over strict and while I don't disagree exactly with his methods I believe players can react quite badly to it. While there might not seem to be much else to upset I think he could upset the apple cart a bit. I think he is better suited to the foreign leagues. Personally, i'd be quite disappointing if we appointed him. But hey. I wanted Martinez!

{Ed002's Note - You are sort of right about Gus Poyet. He can become overly emotional and that is not necessarily a good thing.}

I just wanted throw another name out there and he done well with average side.
