A question for Sid / Eds.
Given that it's pretty obvious that we will be losing quite a few of the older members of the squad and a few U21's will be promoted. Also no European squad to worry about.
How do the numbers stack up in relation to new acquisitions?

Our registered aged-over-21 25-player squad at the end of the January transfer window actually comprised just 23 players.
Of those, 1 (Howard) is definitely leaving and 5 (Hibbert, Gibson, Osman, Pienaar and Mattioni) are out of contract this summer.
That leaves 17 players (Robles, Coleman, Baines, Oviedo, Jagielka, Mori, McCarthy, Barry, Besic, Cleverley, Barkley, Mirallas, Lennon, Lukaku, Konre, Nisse and Rodriguez) .
We have 3 aged-over-21 players returning from long-term loans (Garbutt, McGeady and McAleny) . Note that our other returning loanees - including Tarashaj - will still be classified as under-21 this Summer and won't need to be included in the main 25-player squad
We also have 4 players turning 21 who will have to be registered this summer (Stones, Deulofeu, Browning and Pennington) .
That gives us 17 plus 3 plus 4, which adds up to 24. We're OK at present with the homegrown versus non-homegrown split, but that my change with further outgoings/ incomings. No more than 17 of the 25-player squad can be non-homegrown.
So, as it stands, we would have used 24 slots of the permitted 25, which leaves just 1 additional place available as. Further outgoings will be needed - or players sent out on season-long loans - to create space for further additions.
Our other players - Davies, Dowell, new signing Sambou, Kenny, Connolly, etc., etc., - are still all classified as aged-under21 and don't need to be named in the 25-player squad.

I can't imagine McGeady or McAleny being kept on. If they left that would give us three openings.

Out of the 24 I'd imagine they would be the bare minimum to leave. So at least 3 additions to the squad along with any players leaving being replaced.

I would give Osman a 12 month contract he would not let us down, and about 8 maybe 10 new players needed to sort the mess out.

milomj: keeping Osman gives us 25 players. If you want 6 to 10 new players, which of those 25 would you move out? N. B. Howard, Hibbert, Gibson, Pienaar and Mattioni are NOT in the 25 - you'll have to select others.

Don't understand you there Sid. The 3 I'm referring to are the one free place plus McGeady and McAleny who are mentioned above. Them 5 are gone unless given contracts.
