I just scrolled back through old posts as I am on holiday relying on wifi. I see my comment about Champions League sides getting first choice of signings, then Europa League qualifiers etc was disagreed by some posters. One comment was that it is all about money. I disagree. I would agree that if a Champions League team offered 20k a week less than us, then a player would more than likely end up with us. I take that point on board. However, what is more likely to happen in this modern age is a player's agent will tout his player to both clubs and get the best deal. He will tell the other club the deal that he arranged with the first club in order to get two almost identical deals. Then it is up to the player. and that's when the player chooses the Champions League qualifier. All footballers start their careers hoping to win trophies. I do not believe players sign "just for money. " That was the point I was trying to make. We ended up 11th. so Spurs and the other Europe playing clubs will appear more attractive tomost players. Yes if we offer silly money over and above what they can afford, then we might find some players signing for us. I would suggest that these are the wrong players. I want players who are hungry for success and money is just a part of their desires.

"I would agree that if a Champions League team offered 20k a week less than us, then a player would more than likely end up with us. "

This comment is right. If a team offers more money in wages then the player will go to that team.

Agents are not looking for trophies for their player, they are looking to make them secure financially and if the club he may want to go to doesn't offer enough he won't go on the advice of his agent.

Lukaku is likely to sign a new deal and this is all to do with money. The older a player is I suppose money doesn't tend to be much of an issue but if an agent isn't saying "hey, you might get injured next week and have no career so sign for the most money" then he isn't really doing his job properly.

Sorry Degs disagree, its all about money, simple as that.

Money may be an issue to convince the players but I believe the possibility to be part of a project that matches their ambition. Do you think we are going to throw this money about without expecting to be a success? I do believe if we still had the same management team in place then players would move on. Yes we finished 11th but that will not be the selling point in any talks, the selling point will be being part of the awakening of sleeping giant. Being competitive in what will be a very competitive league next season. Not just with us but with other clubs too. Next season United will expect to compete, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, City and dare I say it Leicester who IMO won't be able to cope with playing in Europe and the league. That's 7 teams who will be expecting to compete for the 4 champions league places and even the title. Are we happy to say let's get 8th behind these teams? No we will be telling the players we are going to compete with these sides for the top honours in the country. Am I saying we should be title challengers? Not yet but with the right additions why not.

I will use Falcao as an example of how money can get any player.

I could mention a thousand more. When you talk about a ptoject, god knows why people say this word, then I could count it on one finger.

So when Chelsea (a mid place team at best) had Abramovich come and throw all his money at them, the players they bought came to them because they wanted to play for Chelsea? Money, money, money.

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea were in the Champions League when he arrived.}

Thing is we as a club have got money but on the other hand we had a terrible Season so it is up to or board and manager to make players stay and join. Having money will always help that's a given some players are willing to play for any team that gives him £££££ other side of it is there are a few players that money ain't the be all end all (it still helps) they and again only a few of them want to be part of something new and exciting the trouble is that they only examples there is are ones where player are given massive contracts BECAUSE that's HOW YOU START SOMETHIN NEW AND EXCITING. Some succeed (early Chelsea, man city and Psg) some don't (Blackburn and just for a laugh Liverpool) last one had do be done. We have to be in the first 3 bracket spend money but don't be reckless I didn't mention Manchester United because think they could end up in both brackets.

Nah. Ed002 makes a valid point re Chelsea. and the Falcao example is an individual example. Icouldnot list thousands who were only in it for the money. All the professional footballers that I have ever spoken to wanted success. They wanted trophies and would play football even if it was not their career!
