Why do clubs give managers a new improved contract after one season. Most teams when they have a new manager have a good first season, maybe due to the confidence boost or something that it might give. Either way Everton have shot themselves in the foot here just like many other clubs. Hopefully now we will judge a manager at least halfway through the contract, and then give an improvement if it's a just reward. I hate Martinez but Everton are the ones at fault here, any of us would take a bigger contract and pay rise if offered to us. Let's hope we have learnt from this for the future.

Exactly danefc80 as much as I dislike our time with Martinez its not his fault. He done nothing wrong. Apart from being incompetent Lol.

He would still be here only for the protests, and then the same person on the board wanted moves as a replacement, I remember getting on lot of stick here when I slated The board for improving his contract, but saying all that I do think we are now looking good but the board still need sorting out, and give us more respect with info.

To be fair the board obviously looked at the Martinez situation after that first season and thought "We don't want a Moyes situation again". They gave him a good contract and it also gave protection to the club IF he was snapped up by another.

Unfortunately, it turned out Martinez was a lemon and after an excellent first season he was a disaster thereafter. It happens to most clubs especially in the top divisions so I wouldn't be bothered about it too much.

John I still firmly believe that RM's first season was a kind of 'resonance' or echo effect from the DM reign. Think of it as a battery that still had plenty of power in it only the charger had gone missing, so it eventually gets run down to nothing .

Stupid knee jerk appointment in the first place (in part triggered by us fans pressure on, let's face it an already naive Chairman) Then an even stupider decision to give an improved contract based on a one season result. Any business person of any competence would never ever do the same under pressure of the same short time period but not however our illustrious Chairman. However given the subsequent events we have to consider the £10 Mill well spent. I just feel sorry for Belgium.

I agree Blue. There were signs even in that first season that our defense was on a slippery slope. It ended up falling off the cliff.
