Football fans are a fickle bunch, I don't think many could deny that. When things are going well, as a collective, we seem to take things in our stride and not sweat the little stuff. But when things are not as we would like, or expect, tiny details seem to make even the meekest of men/ women transform into crazed blood thirsty hounds.
Take our own manager, he has come under a bit of scrutiny over the last month or so but not really for what has happened on the pitch. His Lukaku comments in the Belgian press caused much consternation among the fan base with many believing he had disrespected the club who pays him a very decent wage. Was his remarks taken out of context? Did the journalist take a few liberties and miss out, possibly even add, things that he shouldn't? We probably won't get to the bottom of this one but, for what it's worth, I'd take anything printed in the press with a pinch of salt. Foreign or domestic.
He also courted controversy by answering a question about our red neighbours. I posted at the time that he was just giving an honest assessment of how they were fairing in the league at the time. They were top, if memory serves me right, and scoring for fun. What people seemed to overlook was the fact that, at the time, only about 11 games had been played in the league. Nobody has ever been crowned champions after that many games.
Today I have seen the furore over his Christmas tree, I mean wtf! One thing I've noticed about seasonal decorations over the years is that, predominantly, most of them are red. Saint Nick himself is emblazoned in that colour, the stockings hung up by the kids are much the same. With all the things that are being disclosed about football, I find it hard to believe that such a non-story has got people so riled. Chill out people!
