Eds, reading Swansea statement about GS. strong words like ' bullied' being used and accusations of tapping up. Is there any legitimacy to what they have stated? . as I'm surprised given the clubs stance on such matters when they have had approaches from other parties in our players.

{Ed025's Note - it sounds like sour grapes to me mate..

Sound like trying to give the impression to the fans that " we did all we could to keep him. ". assuming Everton have played it by the book.

We were annoyed in the past when the monied clubs were pursuing our players (Lescott, Stones, etc. ) , so just because we can now afford to spend big like they did, it doesn't mean that clubs like Swansea City aren't entitled to protect their assets and interests and react just as we used to.

Besides, it's obvious that even if Everton haven't officially spoken directly with the player, there would have been discussions with his agent and the player will know what's on offer.

It used to be that certain 'friendly' journalists were asked to have a quite word in the ear of a transfer target. That co-operation meant that they got exclusive stories from the club on a continuing basis.

Managers even used to telephone other club’s players - supposedly just for a friendly chat not mentioning a transfer, but the player could read between the lines.
It was also well known for players, especially when away in international squads, to have a quiet word at their own manager’s request with another club’s player.

These days, in the era of huge money in the Premier League, it's agents who are the go-between. Without them in the chain, it'd surely be difficult for transfer negotiations to really get anywhere under the regulations.

Here is how I see what Swansea have said -

They stated that no agreement had been made to let Everton speak with the player, therefore if they did, they would be in breach of the rules and would be reported. And until they say that a club can (i. e. agree a fee) speak to him, that's their position. I don't see that as accusatory at all, certainly not for tapping up.

I think there's been an over reaction by some fans and as far as them saying that they won't be bullied, I see that as that they are basically telling the player that him downing tools will not force a move. I may be wrong like, but just the way I see it.

Ed, it sounds to me as if they are communicating with their own club and preparing them for the worst. Making it sound like a no nonsense fight to keep their player when they're probably happy to get good money for him.

{Ed025's Note - you may be right ace..
