Hi ed on holiday at moment and got talking to a boro fan who reckons we are going all out for Ben Gibson, could this be true?

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed025's Note - he has been mentioned jipster but i dont know how high he is on the list mate..

I had heard that Gibson was the alternative to vvd for whom we were hoping to get a deal done having been in contact with Southampton last week.

I think Ed002 said that it was either Keane or Gibson, and we got Keane so that's dead.

Things change though, I think it originally was either Keane or Gibson however the surgery for Funes Mori and 6-9 months out recovering means another cb is now in need. Also a left back is needed and it seems from reports that Koeman and Walsh are searching for a player who can cover both roles.

Very true ST. I'd like to see one more CB come in. Someone to push Williams a bit as he still hasn't convinced me 100% that he's the answer in that position. Don't get me wrong, good player like, but I feel we just need that extra little bit of quality at the back - a la Keane.

Hi Eds do we hold an interest in Wesley Hoedt? Seeing reports that Southampton are looking at him as a replacement for VVD and that we are also interested.
He is a left footed CB so does make sense, although we do seem to be linked with pretty much every player currently.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - no links to him and everton up to now ST, but im sure the press will come up with a story that we are interested mate..

I would take a punt on Sakho across the park. Even with baggage a proven beast of a centre half, did well in his loan spell at Palace and proven in the PL with bags of international experience. Him and Keane would be formidable.

Agree3 Disagree2

{Ed025's Note - not for me JB, i dont rate him at all to be honest and is very prone to the odd howler, add to that his disruptive nature and ungainly style it makes for too much of a gamble for me mate..

01 Aug 2017 08:55:16
I would swerve Sakho as well, I don't think he would cope with the pressure of switching Red to Blue
If he became disruptive, like he is known for, we would be in a hurry to get him out the door and would have Carragher tweeting about agent Sakho
And like Ed said he is very prone to the odd howler! 🤦🏻‍♂️.

I see Thomas Vermaelen has been mentioned, think that would be a great signing, PL experience as well as the CL and EL. Echo suggested he's valued at eight million.

Sakho could not cope with comming to a big team!

{Ed025's Note - nice one griff..

01 Aug 2017 18:33:35
I would take a punt on sakho myself there are not many left sided centre halfs about an he is still young if koeman and co would sign him I would back him to shine. I also think him and Keane could potentially make a great partnership at our great club. Wouldn't it be nice if it did happen and he did become the player the reds thought he was going to become. COYB.

Would rather see us go for Ben Gibson than Sakho.

Is Gibson left footed? Would definitely be good to have someone who is, particularly if we're trying to play out from the back rather than lump it up field.

Left footed centre back and a target man would be an ideal window for me. I really like Sigurdsson but Klaasen and Rooney can both play 10 so wouldn't be a priority for me compared with a CB and proper striker. Thought Sandro looked a real handful when he came on. His energy, pace and runs made him look like Gana but up front.

Gibson is indeed a lefty! Although I think martins indi would be better as he can cover left back and left cb.

Prefer Gibson he is a good young talent wouldn't touch sakho at all agree with ed plus they want 30mil for him know that is a laugh there one name mentioned today who I think would be a good alternative and that is Bruno Indi Martin's played in premier league and adds good cover at left back and centre back.

Whilst the new additions to the squad are very welcome - I do think our defence is a major weakness. Williams and Jagielka simply too old and Martina simply not good enough and Baines coming to the end of his EFC career (must be his last season)

As a result we will not break into top 6 never mind top 4

Koeman seems to be only looking at attacking options, the defence needs an overhaul.

Jesus bluewirral just how negative are you being again. our Def is ok I agree with you over martina but I have been very impressed with Keane Baines is still a good player and although I would rather use jags if koeman plays Williams so be it we need experience at CB. Our def was greatly improved last season being really hard to break down we knew we needed a keeper and got one we knew we needed a young CB we got one i'm sure you posted the other day which again was really negative so either your a red coming on to cause a stir or your just the most negative fan in the world if it's the second one I wouldn't want to sit by you at the game because there would be a few arguments going on i'm guessing why don't you just sit back enjoy the ride and watch us challenge top 4.

Bluey, our defence is the weak link in comparison to the other positions. RB, Martina was a free and is a stopgap until A. Coleman is back and B. We identify (difficult in todays market) an ideal replacement. CB's will be Holgate, Kean eventually. We definitely need the LB position shoring up, backup for Baines and like the RB position identifying an ideal replacement.

Agreed that defence is our weakness right now but we can't solve all our problems in one go. Baines (injury permitting) will be fine for majority of season, Keane and Williams need to be given a few games to build a partnership and to get match fit. Jags and Mason are both very decent back up options.
At RB Cucina is merely an experienced back up - not a great one I accept - but hopefully Kenny will get a chance as well until best RB in Prem recovers from injury.

But as Bluey said let's enjoy it and not write this season off before a ball is even kicked.

What you have to remember is RK was a world class defender, if he feels we need to strengthen I'm sure he will, have faith we have kean and he's already looking a bargain, he may think we have options with holgate, and other youngsters until Coleman is back.

If we get giroud, Baines will be back to his old self. Lukaku couldn't head a ball from the left leaving bainsy ineffective.

01 Aug 2017 09:34:40
my point being was bluewirral is very negative yes our Def is our weakest area but it isn't a poor Def Keane is a great signing Williams Welsh captain isn't as bad as some say jags is still club captain and Baines isn't over the hill yet we have signed a potential world class keeper and we have youngsters who are knocking on the door some people need to realise we can't fix everything in 1 go if koeman went out and bought a whole new def people would be moaning saying our strike force and mid r poor the club can't win.

I think some are just looking for things to complain about our defenders are good quality with possibly one of the best defenders, ever, coaching them. Just check out the other teams defenders they are all pretty much in the same if not worse situation than us. At least we have a good blend of youth and experience and the youth has great potential. One thing I would say is give Martina some time he's played one competitive game in preseason he like the rest of the squad need to get up to match speed. He is a stop gap for Coleman after all. COYB.

I can not believe people are questioning the defense. A simple stat that explains it all for me.

2015/ 16 season we finished joint 15th in defense.
2016/ 17 season we finished joint 6th in defense.

Simply because the first season in terms of defense we had a clueless one. Second season we had as said above a world class defender when he was playing.

Along with that we have Pickford who should also improve things more. We will have one of the best defense in the premier league next season. No doubt about it.
