Does anyone know if a free transfer were to sign now, who was not homegrown ie older than 21 and foreign, would they be allowed to be added to the squad list? Thanks in advance

Ed025: For the Premier League, we've named just 23 aged-over-21 players and, as these include the required minimum of 8 homegrown players, we could bring two free agents into the squad in addition to the current 15 non-homegrown players thus making the squad up to the permitted 25.
However, for the Europa League - and I've yet to see our squad list for that even though it should have bee submitted to UEFA a couple of days ago - there are a couple of quirks.
Firstly, the minimum of 8 homegrown (UEFA calls them locally-trained) players must contain a minimum of 4 'club-trained' players. Since Duffy left, we only have 3: Hibbert, Osman and McAleny. So, that reduces the squad to a maximum of 24. Our other 5 homegrown (locally-trained) players are 'association-trained': Baines, Jagielka, McCarthy, Barry and Gibson. Assuming all 8 locally-trained players are included, that leaves places for 16 non-homegrown players, which is 1 more than the 15 we have - therefore giving us just 1 spare place.
However, the second quirk is that any player who's under 21 BUT who's not been with us for two years (such us Lukaku, Stones, Stanek, Galloway, Henen, etc.) has to be included in the aged-over-21 squad of 25 in order to be eligible for the Europa Cup. So, for Stones and Lukaku to both play in the Europa League, one of the other players has to be omitted. My understanding is that we can't add to the Europa League squad - even free agents - until after the group stage.
I'm intrigued as to who's been omitted in order to accommodate Lukaku and Stones - both of whom I'm sure will be included in the Europa League squad.
Simples - not! :-)

So, the UEFA website is now showing our squad. In their regulations, they call this squad our List "A".
Our List "A" contains 22 of the same 23 players as our Premier League squad - Junior is omitted from the Europa League squad. We can only name 24 players in our List "A" because we only have 3 "club-trained" players - as I explained in my earlier post.
Lukaku and Stones are included in our List "A" because of the rules about under-21 players that I also outlined in my earlier post.
All other under-21 players who've been with us for more than two years - that's Barkley, Browning, Garbutt, Long, etc., - will be on what UEFA call our List "B". However, recent (i.e. less than two years) under-21 additions, like Henen, Galloway, Stanek, etc., won't be eligible as part of List "B" for us in the Europa League yet. They'd have to be in List "A" until they've been with us for two years.

Out of interest. can Jags be included in Cowpats first list (Hibbert, Osman, McAleny)as he was with the Everton youth set up before he moved on? Does his time in his early spell at Everton count?

ORIGINAL AJ

Original AJ: nice try ;-) but unfortunately not, as he didn't spend enough time with us between the required ages.
On the same theme, if we'd brought back Rodwell from ManCity, then he might well have been considered to be a 'club-trained' player for us, but I'd have to check that. For ManCity - and now for Sunderland - Rodwell is an 'association-trained' player, which is just like Jagielka is for us.
