If we are going to be playing (presumably) a 4-4-2 with Gerry on the right, Bolassie (perhaps) on the left and Gueye in the centre, what is people's opinion on the last slot available? Barry, Berkley, Mccarthy, Besic (yes, I do know he's injured) or someone else.

Barkley will be the number 10 behind Lukaku. He is vital to the midfield.

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed025's Note - i dont know about vital john, great potential i would say but he needs to up his game for me mate..

10 Aug 2016 23:07:03
Probably be 4-4-1-1. Its be barkley or taranshaj as the player behind lak. ross is not an automatic pick now as has competition.
Id sign a box to box or creative cm as soon as posdibe as we need a bit of craft in the midle of the park at currently have no goal threat.

11 Aug 2016 07:06:10
I reckon it's going to be 3 at the back of Williams, Jags and Mori. Baines and Coleman as wing backs. Then Gueye, Barry and Barkley in the middle with a 3 pronged attack of Bolasie and Gerri playinget either side of Rom.

Interesting comparison on SSN earlier between Williams and Stones. Williams had 314 clearances to Stones 127 last season. 99 interceptions to Stones 56. Williams less errors leading to goals, more tackles won, more fouls committed and virtually the same pass completion percentage. The clearance stat really stands out, will be nice to have a dominant centre half at corners and free kicks.

It just goes to show how little anybody knows about transfers. Papers and sky all reported we had a ten mil bid rejected then we were going back in with 12 mil what happens? We sign him for 9.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I did tell you the issue was not the price. It all came down to whether Williams wanted the move or not. If he did, Swansea would let him go as a thank you for his service over the years. They were happy to keep him but also happy to allow him the chance to get the final big payday for his career. Swans left it totally in his hands to decide.}

10 Aug 2016 19:27:54
Good business in getting Williams for £9million and hopefully sign boliase for £22million plus add one as reported by SSN. Mats and Bony with a top keeper ( I bid £30 million for Butland) .

Hi ed are we looking at any number 10's, don't rate Barkley tbh or a creative midfielder?

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - I would not expect Barkley to leave this summer.
Shani Tarashaj could be used in that role.}

Forgot about him!

Agree0 Disagree1

10 Aug 2016 20:16:40
I agree about Barkley. I know there are areas on the pitch we need to strengthen but for me we are crying out for a creative midfielder.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 21:05:27
Would like to get Mata alright but if not I'd prefer a keeper, striker and left winger before a new number 10. What would we do with Barkley then? As Ed002 said Shani can play there. If we're stuck even Mirallas, Del boy or Lennon would be OK back ups.

So for me a keeper, striker and left winger please Santy. O yea and a nice surprise if your feeling generous.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 23:36:37
Barkley with decent coaching will get better, surprised a few want to offload the guy, the talent is there, just a bit of fine tuning of looking up and when to pass the ball and a little backing off from the boo boys when he tries and the move does not come off, if you don't try you will never improve, give the lad some slack and support him.

I wish every one would stop worrying about who we are getting in and how much they cost. Football is a team game not only consisting of 11 players on the pitch but also a squad of players to pick from. It's a team effort and success is not necessarily due to individual performances but how the team performs collectively. In Koeman and Walsh we have people who have been successful in putting such teams together. Up to present they have been assessing weaknesses in the squad and now they are bringing in players to strengthen the team. I believe their will be a big clear out over the next 12 months and slowly we will have a squad that will be capable of of winning trophies and getting into Europe.

10 Aug 2016 12:53:26
I know I'm going to just seem negative, but I'm really not happy with our transfer business and really worried about this season.

- Stones was always going to go, so why have we waited until a week before the season starts AND played our entire pre-season with him as a key part of the squad? I get that City may have simply not bid yet, but we could have tried to see how the squad functions without him in preseason.

- Williams is a solid and experienced premier league defender, but he's 31 years old and overrated. Why haven't we invested that money into a new, exciting young centre back rather than a carbon copy of Jags who will be gone in 2 years?

- I'm a big fan of Bolasie, but £28m is insane. He WILL be a flop. He's very exciting to watch on MOTD or Youtube because of his ridiculous skills, but watch him week in week out and you start to realise that 9 goals (3 of which where in one game) and 13 assists in 100 premier league games is NOT acceptable. I know a couple of Palace fans who aren't so keen on him. He's just a better McGeady but will garner the same frustration.

- Signing Stekelenburg is laguhabke. The man has been at 2 premier league clubs and been disastrous at both. He would be good as back up, if we go for Begovic (who would be amazing) , but that's just going to hinder Joel (who is far from perfect, but doesn't deserve to be shut out) .

- Gueye is a good tackler, but he offers 0 attacking threat and cannot pass or dictate play at all, so he will neither replace or improve upon Barry or McCarthy

And finally, STILL no Striker or Right back. The Lukaku situation will drag on until the last minutes when we'll let him go and either be stuck with Kone for a season or panic buy another Niasse at the last minute and it'll be a disaster.

Thought this was the season things would start to look up but typically for Everton, they've just found a new way to infuriate and disappoint.

Ab1878 - you talk absolute rubbish man. Answering your own question in the first paragraph. You don't have a clue.

Ashley Williams is a short term solution for shoring up our defence - a very solid dependable player who will defend better than stones did.

Agree2 Disagree1

10 Aug 2016 13:53:03
Jesus lad how negative can you get first of gueye is a very good signing as will Bolasie stats wise both top 2 for there respective teams also Williams overrated do ypu not watch much football once again stats wise 1st in every category and a born leader throw into the possibly Bony and maybe a new goalkeeper and I'm actually feeling positive about the season all be it will be a slow start but once the team connects we will have a fine season how about for once we look at the positives instead of the negatives coyb.

Agree1 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 14:00:37

10 Aug 2016 14:33:27

God! The players not even played a game for us yet and your on one, give it time they might surprise you. Bolasie was a nightmare last game he ran us into the ground and I'm a genuine fan of him.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 17:17:57

10 Aug 2016 18:10:22
AB1878 did post at Lunchtime Hic Hic!

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 19:47:00
Okay, I'll admit I was being a bit TOO negative, but I stand by a lot of what I said;

to BLUEY79: Yes, I do watch a lot of football, which is exactly where my opinions come from. I don't just base my opinion purely off stats, which can be misleading. I will admit I was overly critical about Williams. I think he is slightly overrated, but he is still a very good and dependable defender and a leader (which we have sorely missed) , I wass just annoyed that we've sold arguably the best young centre back in the world and replaced him with a 31 year old.

- To everyone regarding my Bolasie comment, I stand by it. I am a fan of Bolasie because of how entertaining his highlight reels are and how he can do things which you would normally see in a freestyle competition, but I know for a fact he will frustrate and disappoint most fans with his lack of final product. It is exactly the same as when we signed McGeady. I was a fan of him before hand because he was so skillful he actually has a move named after him, but I knew he would be a flop and the fans would hate him and was 100% right.

If we sign Bony and Begovic (or Mata or any of these fairly exciting names) , then my tone will change, but at this moment in time, the way I see it is that we've bought a solid midfielder who will offer nothing new and replaced an exciting young centre back with an old one. And still not signed a new striker.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 22:45:18
Well if you watch football you will know how good Williams is and what a handful Bolasie will be add to that mirralas Lennon del boy Barkley and Bolasie with some playing and some coming off the bench is a frightening thought as I said think positive my man this big sleeping giant is finally waking up ps regarding Stones if he wanted to be the best defender he would of stayed at us and learnt from Koeman I don't care what he says like all modern day so called superstars they want it now and don't think they have to earn it first good riddance to him.

Bony. It's glaringly obvious we need at least 1 top striker if not two and that's with lukaku staying. Wish this matter would be put to bed. Chelsea either pay up this week or forget it. It's so disruptive for any team. The window should close before the season starts. Would put an end to all this messing about.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 12:20:35
Reading between the lines it looks like Williams is a done deal but Kone is up in the air - he will stay at Sunderland as long as they offer him a new contract, otherwise we'll sign him at an inflated price. Niasse will go out on loan for no fee but with £45k wages covered. All the rest is twitter fluff, I think we'll sign a couple more but they'll be completely unexpected.

It's amazing first our fans get frustrated with not buying players now we could get 2-3 players in next 24-48 hours through the door and they are moaning about prices. Why do people look at figure being mentioned and weather they are worth it. My look on things are stones sold for £50m and we bring in Williams£12m, Bolasie £25m Kone £18m that's a £5m net spend and makes our first team squad so much stronger, it's great business.
Why are people obsessed with marquee signings and what is a marquee signing? 2 best players last year Kante and Marhez cost 5m between them hardly marquee signings, pogba yes good player but has never ever justified 90m never looked at him and said he was best player on the pitch technically brilliant but won't win you a game like a Messi Suarez or aguero for me a midfielder that cost you world record fee must stand out and score plenty of goals.

10 Aug 2016 11:38:38
Totally with ED on this. Money means nothing to us fans. We don't understand how it works and all of the costs involved. The figures mentioned by the media don't go into all of the detail but more importantly its not yhe money that's important but the player.

Say we have a great team but we only have one CB. We can buy one but he will cost 20mil in jan or have him now for 60mil. It has to be this guy because he ticks every box for us.

When do you buy?

It's sounds stupid but I've said this before it's more about the player than the money. In the past we only bought because they were a bargain and with bargains they don't win you trophies. Now we are buying players because they fit the plan. that's something completely different.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 12:42:12
If we do not go for players, posters are saying why not, when we do go for players, posters moan too old too small too dear etc, let's just trust Walsh and Koeman, take the price equation away.

We may have a big fat juicy war chest, but until we step up a level, we will not get world class players, the players we bring in now may take Everton up to another level, then we can realistically go for the high class players.

Just remember City had the same problem at first with signing top class players, they moved up a level, which now has a knock on effect where players will jump at joining City.

We will get there, takes time, but we will.

10 Aug 2016 11:00:56

10 Aug 2016 09:24:02
I'd be very surprised if we sign more than one player this week. I think there may be quite a lot of media dross floating around. The only confirmed bid I have found details for is Williams the rest is all speculation. If we do sign anyone as well I wouldn't be shocked if its none of the players mentioned. let's face it when Morshi took over we were signing every Tom Dick and Harry and we didn't sign any of them. I would also question why we would sign so many Africans knowing they may be missing for the AN Cup that would mean the the spine of the side could be away for a crucial period of the season. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Agree0 Disagree2

10 Aug 2016 11:29:57
sa90 do you not agree that signing players who are good enough to be in their national team, regardless of the nationality, is the right way to go?

Other teams also have Africans playing for them and seem to manage ok, I am not sure you realise we will only have to deal with potential loss of key players once every two years, then it will only be for 2 or 3 weeks maximum, hardly a deal breaker in my eyes.

If the players are good enough to fit in with Koeman's plans then I don't give a rats nose where they originate from.

10 Aug 2016 10:05:29
Defensively he is an improvement over stones. Not just an improvement but a huge one at that. Throw any argument at that but you will not change my mind. Bolasie, inconsistent? Yes he may be but when he's on his day (which he has pretty much every game against the dark side) he is unplayable. Proper coaching and motivation can limit his inconsistencies. Honestly some people are never happy.

Agree1 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 10:35:50
12m for Williams is a great piece of business. If he's got three years left in him that's 4m per year for guaranteed defensive performances. Working on the same basis of 4m per year, have Citeh bought 12 years of guaranteed solid defensive performances in Stones? No. They've bought potentially a great player but one who won't be a rock for a couple of years at least.

As for the people moaning about Gueye, Bolassie and Bony, I'd rather have them who know the EPL than a 'big name' signing like Witsel who looks like a pain in the arse and has never played in England. Just having money doesn't mean you can attract Hollywood names when you can't offer immediate chance of trophies or European football.

Agree1 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 12:03:48
Williams is a solid defender! Miles better defender than stones. Not a better footballer but a better defender and Leicester won the league with huth and Morgan just launching it long and smashing people at the back. We need a solid Centre Half not someone who does Cruyff turns in his 6 yard box.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Aug 2016 00:11:36
This is going to be a whole brand new team. We will all need a program to know who is playing for whom and in what position.

Overall, its an upgrade (this year AW should be just as good if not better than JS)
