Roberto Martinez, when managing Wigan Athletic, played eight Premier League games between 2009 and 2013 against Tony Pulis when he managed Stoke City. RM won 2 of the eight matches and drew the other 6. Considering that both managers are known for getting their teams to play in a certain way - but allowing for certain tactics (like the Delap throw-ins) being unavailable - could it be that RM has a way of getting results against Pulis teams? All very hypothetical, of course, and we need to be winning our home matches - not drawing them or (worse) losing.

But did you know that 87.5% of statistics are manipulated in order to prove a point. And they have removed the word gullible from the Oxford English Dictionary.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ah, but Degsy, 76% of statistics are made up. 83% of people know that.

While we don't have the Champions League football to attract the top players - let alone the money to pay top wages or big transfer fees for them - it's absolutely vital that we keep the quality players, like Barkley, that we've developed ourselves or, like Coleman, that we've brought in for trifling fees and developed-on ourselves. With those players, once we get into the virtuous circle of European qualification generating income that can be invested to enhance the playing squad that gets us repeat European qualification, then we're surely into a better financial scenario and could get a really good squad that's a blend of home-produced and brought-in players.
He's the right one, he's the bright one, he's Martinez!

{Ed025's Note - i like that mate..

10 Feb 2014 21:02:17
Can the Eds please put up a voting poll as follows?
Where, out of these four choices, do you now think Everton will finish in the Premier League?
(A) Top Four
(B) 5th, 6th, or 7th
(C) 8th, 9th, or 10th
(D) 11th or lower

Thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - there is no point in including below 8th POD...its just not viable mate....but i will do one for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th

Ed025 - you might not think that's viable - and you're almost certainly right - but I wanted voters to choose what they think and that'd include the lower (however unlikely) finishing positions.
Live long and prosper, mate :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i just dont want trolls putting stupid predictions in POD, it just causes hassle mate..

Ed025 - fair point. Thanks.

Agree0 Disagree0

1st Man City
2nd Chelsea
3rd Liverpool
4th Arsenal
5th Spurs
6th EVERTON
7th Newcastle
8th Southampton
9th Man Utd

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - not a bad guess that mike...i would say united for 7th though mate, and us and spurs maybe reversed..

Good post that mate, I would settle for 5th though.

Is it something he said? Naismith makes good runs and is always looking for the ball. Yet our lads seem reluctant to pass to him. The only time he gets it is when there's nobody else to pass too. Feel sorry for the lad, we keep saying give him a couple of games and see how he goes. But if he doesn't get the ball how's he going to do that. Bye the way Ossie showed yesterday he's great for one half, would use him for the second half though myself.

agree on both counts twoold, but we see the runs via camera angle which is set back a good few hundred yards from the action where it is much simpler to see those runs as opposed to on the pitch where you may or may not see the pass as blatent as it may be. I have sat in the majority of stands around goodison and you get a different interpretation of space from each one. Gwladys and the park end for example shrinks the length of the pitch which makes u think a player running at goal is about 18 yards out and start shouting shoot when he's actually 35 yards out. differently when sitting in the paddock or the family enclosure the pitch space is so vast due to sitting so close to the action that your vision can not see as much of the pitch as you would in the likes of the main stand/ top balcony/ bullens (upper and lower) The players who have an understanding about each others game may not necessarily see the run, but know they are there due to playing with that player for some time, such as pienaar and baines. the more players continue to play regularly together, the more understanding of each others game they will become. This is partially why I am looking forward to our under 18's progressing in about 5/6 years time. Quite similarly to the united team that had scholes, beckham and 2 nevilles break through into their 1st team, they had all played regularly together for some years prior to breaking into the 1st team and understood eachothers strengths.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fair point Hutton but some of us don't have 5 to 6 years mate. Lol

I like Roberto Martinez but bloody hell everyday he's got something to say to the media.
Maybe as the King would say:
A little less conversation, a little more action please
Satisfy me!

{Ed025's Note - i like hearing him mushy....maybe your just lonesome tonight.. :)

'Don't be Cruel' ed it was just a few weeks ago I thought It was, 'Now or Never' for top 4 spot and after Sunday it was, 'Too Much' and I was, 'All Shook Up' but then again we've still got many games left so, 'That's Alright'.

Another disappointing game. Good first half, Not in second half. will be lucky to get one point from next two games. be very lucky to be above Man u by the end of season. probably finish 7th.
not bad for a first season for RM. Following in the footsteps of Moyes. I just don't rate any of the players he has brought in so far. bring back Anachibe.
Raz.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

So McCarthy, Barry, lukaku, Deulofeu are all crap?

Agree0 Disagree0

You don't rate any of the players brought in.what about McCarthy, del boy, lukaku and so on. Mccarthy has definitely improved our midfield. Much better DM than Fellaini.

Agree0 Disagree0

Mc carthy will get better and better, and with Ross we have the foundation to build a superb midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

We will definitely get more than 1 point raz. We play Palace next, guaranteed win. They are absolute crap.

As for his signings.

McCarthy is a a good player, but could do more. Start dominating games and scoring a few goals. Will become better next season.

Barry is ok, nothing special. I wouldn't want him in our midfield next season. He is so painfully slow. Done a job though, but not for next season.

Depardieu will become a great player. It won't be with us though.

Lukaku IMO has been a big disappointment. Can see why Jose was willing to loan him out. Could come good, but can't see him signing. Can't see Chelsea wanting to keep him, but wouldn't pay the £20 million+ they will probably want.

Kone. What was the point of this signing. Useless, I expect he will be gone next season.

Alcaraz. A bit of a meh signing. Sell in the summer.

Joel. Will never be our first choice keeper, decent backup though.

McGreedy. I don't see why we got him, he doesn't bring anything to the team. Will be here next season, I wish he wasn't though.

Traore. We will see how he gets on for the few months he is here.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - bloody hell mike...do you rate any everton player?..

I know it is all about opinions, but I would say Barry, Lukaku and McCarthy have been excellent. Kone and Alcaraz have been injured.Del Boy has shown glimpses of brilliance but has also looked like a little boy at times. McGeady has not yet impressed, but it is early days yet. It worries me that of the 3 signings that have impressed, only one is a permanent. Just hope Barry signs a permanent too.
Degsypulford

Agree0 Disagree0

I have said that McCarthy, Barry and Depardieu have been good ed. I also said Joel is ok. That is 4 out of 8, as I'm not judging Traore yet. that's not too bad.

I am just looking to next season as I think we need to improve, so that we can push on.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i know its about opinions mike, and i have always respected your thoughts, but for me barry has been our best player this year, closely followed by mccarthy distin and seamus..

That's got to be a wind up post hasn't it?! LOL! (the opening post I mean)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - it must be latch....im giving raz the raspberry..

Lukaku is what his name suggests. KAK. Most overhyped player to ever wear the blue shirt. When he first joined he had a point to prove. He ran tirelessly and would often create space for the others whilst scoring goals. Then along came the plaudits and out the window went the work rate. Now he thinks he is gods gift and seems to constantly talk about things that have nothing to do with what he is paid to do which is score goals.

Thoroughly disappointed with yesterday's result. By far the better team, but the lack of a centre forward really did show. let's hope Lacina Traore makes a big impact, soon. I would say Top 4 has probably gone for us this season. Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and City will get those places I would imagine. Finish above United and an FA Cup win would do me for this season. let's bounce back against Palace!

Clattenburg is a disgrace - every little contact on them was a foul - like both players equally shoulder barging on a ball chase - he obviously gives it to them - whereas when our players are knocked off the ball he let's it go

Everton should put in a complaint against him and refuse to have him - he's obviously completely biased against everton - was he a reds fan as a kid?

Marrallas greedy side cost us yesterday - gold played opportunity to slide ball to Naismith for am almost certain goal and he grabs a less than half chances to himself

You can't afford to do that - its going to rob of games and points

Now with almost all players back we need to go on a massive push til end of season - it was always going to be a tough few weeks with 5 or 6 players missing but we didn't do too bad - the villa 3 points was massive

Bitterly disappointed with the result today. On reflection we were the better team but never took our chances in the first half. Ossie had two really good efforts (especially the second one) and I thought Steven Naismith covered a lot of ground up front.
Second half was poor. Where was the plan B? The game was crying out for the big fella to come on and cause them problems but McGeady and Del Boy? WTF?
Clattenberg was his usual 12th man to the opposition. Why he never blew for a foul on Ossie prior to the one he then gave against Barry I do not know. Why oh why is he still considered a top referee?
So a bad result when you look at the table and see the RS pulling away from us. Maybe it's the cup this year. COYB.

Absolutely gutted! Yet again we were the better team! Created the most chances but can't finish them! Except from one cracking save from loris we didn't really bother him! They had 2 shots on target all game and won! Having all the possession is one thing but we really need an end product! We are so close to being an top class team just need a striker who can finish at least half of his chances and we will be right up there with the best of them!
We have only lost 4 games in a transitional season so it's not all doom and gloom, we are still in with a chance of top 4 it's not totally out of the question! But if we miss out then 5th or 6th is still a bloody good season for us! We are still in the cup as well so a trophy is still a possibility! All in all we are doing well, beat palace on Wednesday and we are still battling for 4th! Liverpool will drop more points we just have to make sure we take advantage when they do!
Little bit disheartened at the moment but still a happy blue! Bring on palace looking for a bit performance from the and I reckon traore should start need a striker on the field!
