Having the usual debate with my lad over team selection and my obsession with balance. We both feel that signings and a quicker than anticipated Howard recovery at the hands of Dr Bob mean that Joel and yesterday's defence stay put. Both prefer the rejuvenated Lukaku over Kone and would find a place for Naismith and Mirallas (possibly on RH side)
The real debate was the midfield. We can't see Barry ever being dropped by Martinez and think that McCarthy will come straight back in when fit leaving Besic as the likely casualty. We both really rate Besic and were wondering about a system that could accommodate all three of them, given that they are all probably a similar bet to Tony Hibbert as first goal scorer!
Personally whilst McCarthy is out I would bench Barry, play Barkley centrally and Oviedo left midfield. After all two DM's all season hasn't done much for our goals conceded.
Any thoughts

Think I've mentioned a 4-3-3 before, usual back 5, barry sitting infront, mccarthy and besic doing their thing and covering the full backs with mirallas and naismith supporting lukaku.

Agree0 Disagree0

To be fair,I know Ross has been given abit of a bashing on here, but I thought his best game this season was against qpr when he was next to besic in holding midfield roll

Agree0 Disagree0

Me too Tedster. Once McCarthy is back and firing on all cylinders, he and Besic should be the holding midfielders with Barry dropping to the bench. But will Roberto see this?

Want him and garbutt to be our left backs, so much potential there.

Any comments on Ross Barkleys performance so far this year?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - he has been poor for me mick, the lad has great ability there is no doubt, but potential can only take you so far in this game, and at 21 needs to step up to the plate mate..

11 Jan 2015 20:30:44
I feel sorry for the lad its not his fault the media and the fans have built him up so much. he's never compared himself to ballack or gazza or made himself out to be a world beater. he's got good ability, a good attitude and more importantly he's a toffee imo we should be giving the lad more support

Agree0 Disagree0

Roughly what I said in my huge paragraph about him there Ed, in one sentence, Pffffffffffffffff why do I bother! he

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - you bother because you care howie...just like the rest of us mate..

Im with you on that one Ed025.

Agree0 Disagree0

Has great ability but needs to tackle more, pass the ball a lot quicker, run into those unoccupied pockets of space for me.Team needs to be built around Besic, Stones, Lukaku and himself.

A flaw in his game which suprisingly I didny mention in my rants below is that he doesn't get tight and press the opposition. He keeps about 5 yards away but let's them turn, go past him or pass it around him and he just let's it happen. When on the ball he likes keeping it for as long as possible but doesn't actually try and win it back, he liked having the ball but doesn't like winning it, which is why naisy is boss

Tbh I probably agree with u lemur/swan but those are all things that can be sorted out with the correct coaching. The qualities that barkley already posseses though can not be taught youv either got it or u haven't and he has!

Agree0 Disagree0

There is no doubt the lad has ability and he is a true blue which is always a good thing. But he has been very poor this season, although injury and being played out of position does not help.

I wonder how much of his lackluster performances are down to el Bob's continual insistence to massage the lads ego? "phenomenal unique talent, the new Ballack" etc. etc. Praise the lad when he plays well of course but don't over do it.

I remember watching an interview with Big Joe before the World Cup, he said in his opinion Ross was a good talent and prospect, but shouldn't be picked for the WC Squad on the basis of one season as he needed another season or two in order to develop. Seems he got it right.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - im with you mate..

Totally agree wedge! Martinez is silly for comparing him to such players its just setting him up to fall and I think the reason the media are billing him so much is because there looking for the next rooney. Like I say I feel sorry for him the lad just wants to play and do well for everton but he has all this to deal with aswell

Lets hope Tues.F.A. Cup replay is a turning point in our season (just like the Oxford United game & the "inchie" goal)
if we can keep Stones fit to play alongside Jag's,
get Jimmy Mac back, & stop playing MaGready then I feel much more confident.
& CONFIDENCE is the KEY word!
If we don't beat West Ham, & West Brom then I fear for us against the dark side, & for the rest of the season.
I still want rid of the Marmite man, he as taken us to a place we should never be, & I for one have NO CONFIDENCE in him or long term BK.

I was there that night against Oxford away. As you say, we looked dead and buried until Inchy scored that goal against the run of play. That goal kept Kendall in a job and the rest was history in as far that Everton went on to Cup finals, League titles and European success.
Oh how I hope that history could repeat itself! It starts with West Ham United next week in the Cup followed by Albion at Goodison
next Monday. COYB.

The Barkley debate rumbles on. Its like we need to be in a panic situation for him to take control of games! Against West Ham the last ten minutes he wanted the ball all the time and kept prompting n pushing the team. Again V City he only came alive when they scored. Its like a switch with him, let the team do it for him unless its a must. If he's touted as the next Ballack, Gasgoine, even recently Brazilian Ronaldo, well he can play anywhere. All this about him out left, is right as him not in right position but if that's where he is, well play to your best. He is so flat footed at times, totally rooted to the spot looking around him like he's eyeing up the play, but quite frankly doesn't know what to do. He anticipates nothing, stands there watching Naisy win a header then decides to go!! He should be on his toes expecting him to win the header (i do ). He needs to watch Naisy in a game the man has total game sense, see's what's happening, what could happen, where he can be available and above all if he loses it, he damm right tries to get it back. i'm not asking him to be a Naisy type player but just to be more game aware, as he is when we are in need of something, sometimes this comes too late with him. Maybe he should watch the Tennis players, they are on their toes from the first shot, you can't sit back on your heals and hope or expect something to happen. Physically he shouldn't be knocked off the ball, he shouldn't lose the ball, and should be able to do that to the opposition, well yesterday was a case of caught in position, running alongside players without so much as a touch on them and as for tackles, well non existent. We can't be putting him in this bracket of the next Gerrard for England or could be better than Rooney at his best and so on, he needs to show from the first whistle what he is about. let's not forget, he's 21.Alan Ball won the World Cup at 21, Gerrard was running the RS midfield at 21, and here we all are moaning about him. Potential means nothing if you don't go out there and try and take control of games or put a marker down. He needs to get nasty, he is too timid and soft to be a great. Name me one great midfielder who didn't have a bit of nastiness in them? C'mon Ross grow up n grow a pair, the world is your Oyster but youve got to go out n want it more.

Why does Oviedo not get more game time, I think he is our most underrated player!

Hes boss isn't he

He can play left sided, he is committed yet others are clearly ahead of him in RM's eyes. Should have had more opportunities.

11 Jan 2015 17:03:48
I think he should Be a permanent left sided midfield player because that is where he is best. That way garbutt can be the direct left back substitute.

Haha jus read on ssn what papers say that Liverpool are lining up a summer bid for Garbutt. hope it's not true as in my opinion he's got great potential to be one of the best left backs in the league and even maybe future England no.1

He won't go there, he's into all the anti liverpool stuff on twitter. He hates them, loves everton, seen the same with green and duffus, he will stay I think.

what does mcgeady offer us

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Jan 2015 04:44:45
He keeps the other players relaxed, they know that no matter how bad they are or how bad things get, at least you're not aiden mcgeady. In fact, i'm going to create a line right now for myself to use, here we go, 'its bad but its not quite mcgeady is it', see? Simple!, if I was a teammate I would just be constantly poking his belly and tormenting him.

Agree0 Disagree0

Nice one swan, I suppose if you have a bad game someone could say ' mate you've just had a mcgeady!'

Agree0 Disagree0

Why u so bad aleast i'm not mcgeady

. great to see some continued improvement from the team today.but we are still only 3 points above the relegation zone so reality must prevail & a sequence of wins is desperately needed!! I'd like to see us go for Forster (but will take Marshall if not as I do think he's good), Nastasic, Delph, Delefeo on loan & another proven striker like Defoe on loan as Etoo looks to be going. On another subject I'd give the captaincy to McCarthy & ship out McGeady & Alcatrash!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Jan 2015 01:57:06
Mccarthy wants to leave, alcaraz will leave for nothing regardless and it would cost us money to sell mcgeady, we will have to pay a team to take him off us.

Agree0 Disagree0

And we have still only won 1 game without Leon Osman ALL season! Perhaps you will believe me of his contribution when he comes back and we win another game!

Agree0 Disagree0

. I rate Osman. think he's been a good player & very underrated over the years. unfortunately his best years are behind him now but still has an important role as an impact player!
