Use our rumours form to send us everton transfer rumours.

Just a quick question people, out of the following youngsters which of them will make it and become good players and which of them will flop like Rodwell?. Ross Barkley, George Green, John Lundstram, Chris Long, Hallam Hope, Shane Duffy, Jake Bidwell, John Stones, Matthew Kennedy and Tyias Browning.
Just thought I'd get peoples opinions!.

To be fair, Rodwell wasn't really a flop, just far too injury-prone. When he was fit, he was a super player to have contracted to the club.

Agree0 Disagree0

Duffy will follow in Distin's footsteps, Barkley is still developing and Kennedy is one for the future, also I expect Stones to push for a first team place next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think it's a bit harsh to label Rodwell a flop. His form was clearly affected by injuries and, I suspect, personal issues. He was deemed good enough to be transferred in by the reigning champions and that deal brought an eight figure fee into Everton's coffers, which enabled us to bring in Kevin Mirallas. He was also breaking into the England squad and may well become a regular England player in due course. It's just a pity it didn't work out as hoped at Everton. As for the other hopefuls, obviously only time will tell, but it's a massive step-up from U-18 and U-21 to the first team in the premier league. Talent is key, but physical and mental toughness are also vital. That's why IMHO a spell on loan playing regular competitive football for a lower-division team is almost always the best way to see if a young player is really going to make it eventually with us or not. {Ed025's Note - hard to argue with that jonesy....well written..

Agree0 Disagree0

How old is Rodwell now? there is still plenty of time for him to develop. Look at Peter Reid and his younger days!

Okay it was a bit harsh to label him a flop but the fact that he went to city didn't really mean much in terms of his quality they had a horrid summer window, they signed Garcia who was only bought because they failed to get De Rossi, and Richard Wright. I do wish Rodwell all the best but he was hyped up to be special but even when he was fully fit IMHO he was a headless chicken, didn't know when to tackle and would jog around the pitch to make himself look busy but it didn't contribute to the team, the use of the word flop was a poor word to describe what I meant, Rodwell was like Gosling and Vaughen, hyped up to be the next big thing but in the end they just don't become anything like there supposed potential which is my fear with Barkley.

Great point about Peter Reid.
I'm sure we were in for him a year or so before he joined us - I think we'd agreed a £600K fee, but that deal was scuppered by an injury. When we did eventually sign him at the end of 1982, we only paid £60K - a tenth of the earlier fee! I'm sure his injury record was behind the reduced fee - but what a bargain. He was a key driving force behind our mid-1980s success. Andy Gray, whose own injury record should have scuppered his transfer to us, was another player key to our transformation from mediocrity & failure to winners. Howard Kendall's transfer dealings when he first managed the club in 1981 weren't that great IMHO, but later on he brought in some superb players. DM, many though his qualities are, will have to go some to match HK. Don't forget how much pressure was on the board to sack HK when we were struggling during his first few years - they stuck with him and funded the acquisition of top-quality players - I just wish that today's board would do likewise for DM.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think all of them except for maybe bidwell and browning (think they top out at championship level) have a shot at being good premier league players, if not then i'm sure they could do a job as a squad player.

in particular i'm excited for george green and john lundstram, I think they are both exceptional midfield players, capable of doing a lot of things.

i have confidence in john stones too, but I hope he stays at right back rather than moving to centreback.

you have forgotten conor mcaleny. he's been a player i've been excited about for a while now. think in a two striker system he can do a really good job. just hope he gets the opportunities.

Not a fan of McAleny he should of ran through on goal against Arsenal instead of going for a spectacular volley, plus doesn't he have a poor goalscoring record for the reserves? And is always injured but you never know, he could slip under the radar and be good but I doubt it.

Yeah but at the end of the day champs league has completely distorted the money now and if we do unearth some nuggets they just get bought off us

Fergie and venger and their euro mates stitched up the leagues to favour their clubs and its impossible for anyone without a billionaire to compete now and fergie has even stitched up that route now as well

Very unfair

So united win it 70 or 80 times in next hundred years

V boring

Cheers fergie

as most of you would have recieved today from the official everton app this afternoon that moyse has said that jags wil take over as captain next season from neville surley that tells us he is staying on as manager because it would not be his choice if he was leaving

Boney blue

Believable2 Unbelievable0

It does not mean anything other than he's moyes choice of captain for next season if he stays. If a new manager comes in he might want somebody different.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not bad thinking. But nothing is set in stone until it is set in stone. If that makes sense.

Agree0 Disagree0

Very good point that.

I heard that discussions about a takeover collapsed when Everton's negotiating team donned south sea islander costume (grass skirts, floral garlands - the works) and belted out this song from the musical South Pacific: "Happy talk, keep talking happy talk; Talk about things you'd like to do; You got to have a dream, if you don't have a dream; How you going to have a dream come true?"
At that, the potential suitors got up and walked away saying that Everton's takeover is more like "From Here To Eternity" than "South Pacific" and that the Everton board should take their south sea ukuleles and "pluck" off.

Isn't it strange how some people press the "disagree" button for an original post like this one? What's to disagree with?

Agree0 Disagree0

What the hell, I am going to disagree with all the posts. Just in that sort of mood.
Degsypulford

Agree0 Disagree0

They most likely don't understand and, in turn, appreciate such an original and 'witty' post such as this.

Agree0 Disagree0

Does the un-named poster's use of inverted commas around the word witty indicate sarcasm? If so, I'm deeply wounded (not!) by the lack of universal appreciation and admiration for my comedic & literary efforts. I don't know if I'll ever be able to create such masterpieces of English prose - like what I wrote - ever again ;-) {Ed025's Note - you keep it coming sid..some people are devoid of a sense of humour..

Agree0 Disagree0

No Sid the un-named poster appreciated your efforts and I wasn't intending to come across as sarcastic. Good stuff and keep them coming, they provide something fresh and original.

Personally think any 'stall' in Osman deal has been blown out of proportion. However anything in advance of 4 million, I wouldn't hesitate in selling. Osman has been a handy player for us but he is not the CM player of a club trying to break the top 4/5. Invest the money in a younger athletic midfield player who can use the ball aswell as get across the pitch. Don't stagnate for sentimental reasons. he isn't good enough anymore simple as that, I refuse to be blinded by these england call ups where he is used in meaningless games so the 'big clubs' players can have a rest! Time to INVEST! DON'T STAND STILL!

Believable5 Unbelievable2

I agree with you, but for me sentimentality is one of moyes big weaknesses and one of the reasons why he'll never be a top manager, so I can't see osman going nowhere even if a silly offer does come in for him

Agree0 Disagree0

The thing is though, we won't get any money. Whoever made up the £6m thing is a person who isn't quite up to date on this topic. Ossie has until the end of this season on his contract meaning all this Spurs talk is due to him going there on a free.

I honestly have no idea who thinks we would get £6m or as you say, £4m+, for a player who is 31 - 32 when his contract expires - and has a mere few months left on his contract.

If I'm missing something then let me know, but I'm 99. 9% sure I'm seeing correctly.

Agree0 Disagree0

Excuse my previous reply. I forgot he still had two years left on his deal. I was thinking of Nev.

Once again, excuse me.

Sorry.

Agree0 Disagree0

Blimey! Sentimentality is not something I'd associate with David Moyes. My take is that DM has had to select some underperforming players for the first team simply because he has such a limited squad to pick from - and that is because we didn't have the money for transfer fees or wages for more players.
He clearly knows that without money to strengthen & deepen the squad - and lower the average age - we will be dropping into mid-table mediocrity or, heaven forfend, struggling against relegation and the financial disaster that would follow that catastrophe. The problem is that with Financial Fair Play we'll be restricted in what we can spend. I fear that we could be in for another period of inferiority - not just compared to the Champions League big clubs, but also all those middle-ranking clubs (especially those with modern, income-generating stadiums).

I see that, despite two attempts at submitting it, my post about the takeover being like a musical hasn't been shown. I don't think it was abusive - perhaps you didn't find it funny (everyone to their own taste I guess) or perhaps you don't like musicals :-) Considering the other posts that do appear on this website, I'm a little surprised that mine didn't pass muster. C'est la vie. {Ed025's Note - it was put on the dodgy page sid, as i was unsure it was you mate..

qpr will be a difficult game for us tomorrow. yes we should beat them. and I think we will. but it's not going to be the easy game that many people think it will be. an early goal will help settle us as always. but we rarely get one. crucial not to concede first as we normally do and give teams a headstart.
i am going for 3-1 (we rarely keep clean sheets this season)
goal scorers- fellaini, jelavic (yes I know crazy) and osman.

regarding osman I think it purely paper talk about this contract stuff. I like leon although I do believe he is running out of legs at the moment but who can blame him as he has played most of our games this season and has been an important part of it. but if spurs were offering 6million plus townsend.

1878barlow

Believable6 Unbelievable0

Andros Townsend has looked a decent player, albeit in a losing QPR team. However, this is his ninth loan spell (each at a different club I believe) in four seasons - and that'd be my only concern about the player: despite his QPR performances, is he really ready for regular starts in the premier league? When we send a player out on loan, it's usually just the one club involved for that player - occasionally two clubs (a League 1 or 2 side to begin with, then a Championship side) that we use, even if it's for a long period (e. g season-long for Coleman at Blackpool or Bidwell's extended loan at Brentford). Once we've seen how our loanees handle things, we usually give them a regular place in our squad or decide to move them on. I guess that it's not any failure on Townsend's part that Tottenham have so many players - I think they've got ten out on loan (!) - that he wasn't getting regular football, even with them being (until yesterday) still in the UEFA Europa League.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fair point but I think it is difficult to compare our loanees to spurs as they have a bigger squad. and during townsend's loans, they had wingers such as lennon, bale, kranjar, pienaar etc so was always going to be difficult for him to get a game. even pienaar never got played so townsend had no chance. just a thought that if any of the osman rumours were true (which I seriously doubt they are) then a cash plus player swap such as townsend would be a good deal (although I do like little leon).

so. 9 points in 8 days anyone?

Leapfrogging Arsenal and Spurs (Spurs will still have 2 games in hand - against City and Chelsea though).

I think it's on you know!

I might be the only one but I wouldn't mind if we didn't get europe this season. I know that everyone will complain but I do have a reason. Even though some of our key players may leave, for a lot of money by the way, we do not have the squad depth to be competing on a Thursday and a Saturday/Sunday. Yes we have a amazing team with amazing players but I don't want our league form to suffer along with our players being shattered as well. Good examples of this include Liverpool and Newcastle. We have a squad total of 28 and only 23 have played this season. In my opinion don't sign 3-6 first team players then we won't have much success next season if we do qualify for europe. Sorry for this just wanted to get my views across.
Jord

Believable6 Unbelievable1

The Europa is a nightmare cup to win - you play like a hundred games and still get knocked out in the quarters or semis and no one remembers you - even if you do well in it

The champs league teams should not be allowed to drop into it for one thing but then European football has been rigged to favour the 'top' teams

Agree0 Disagree0

I always said it mate that Europa league is a joke and they should do away with it. You need a massive squad to compete in it and it is starting to take it toll on Spurs now they look very raggy.

Agree0 Disagree0

A good point. I am not really too fussed about europa league either.
i am sure you need to win it to make any decent money from it.
That said it does throw up some great away days!
