Question for Ed002 - are football players registered as individuals for tax purposes, i. e. paid PAYE, or are they registered as limited companies?

I was listening to a debate on TalkSport earlier about the money footballers earn and it made me think about how much tax they pay. In theory the enormous money from abroad that's pumped into the PL through broadcasting rights and therefore into players' pockets could actually be a huge benefit for the economy, if they are paid PAYE?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Actually a really good question but a generally boring answer in the modern day. Back in the fairly recent day (a) all EPL clubs have returned the Revenue's questionnaire regarding the use of trusts and the payments of expenses; (b) a number of EPL clubs were already negotiating a financial resolution; (c) at least one EPL club had already settled with the Revenue was now in discussion with them over some rather more trivial issues that will require a number of players to make settlements; (d) at least one Championship club settled a small amount; (e) at least one EPL club cancelled additional perks (free tickets to games etc.) following some discussions with the Revenue over another issue; (f) There are a number of clubs that made payments in to Trusts; (g) two EPL clubs have settled a separate matter related to the payment of money related to the image rights of a player who has represented both side; (h) that the Revenue are not simply looking at trusts, but at all payments made to and on behalf of players.

There have been instances in the past where players have been paid via offshore trusts, limited companies for services rendered to the club and in tax-exempt oil paintings and cars. These were referred to as “loopholes” and they have pretty much all gone by the board now, although I know of one now ex-EPL player who was until not too long being paid via his residency of Monaco.

The clubs all realise that there was a need to resolve these issues and to settle because the consequences of litigation are potentially very harsh. It won't be perfect, but it won't be that bad. Other counties are ahead or behind England on this but the days of yore have pretty much moved on with respect to abuse.}

20 Jan 2017 07:52:12
Sounds like a mess to me Ed. Also sounds like some were sailing pretty close to the wind. I am surprised there have not been any cases as per Spain and Messi. Perhaps our tax collectors are more reasonable? lol

Thanks Ed. I know in Trent years HMRC has moved to close many loopholes such as giving employees gift vouchers as perks etc, and I guess tickets for friends and family given to players would fall into that bracket.

Similarly the ability to pay a company's named directors in dividends at solely 20% corporation tax has been almost completely abolished.

Surely the 'right of substitution' definition on a limited company would also come into effect here, because there is now way you could argue that that would be the case for a professional footballer setting themselves up as a limited company.

That said, it could explain Oumar Niasse.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Much of the limited company, trust type approaches are behind us now.}

19 Jan 2017 22:36:38
I hadn't thought about the clubs' positions but of course they would have avoided paying statutory levies such as employer's NI, pension, death in service etc if players were registered as limited companies. They would only have paid VAT on invoice values and that could have been reclaimed if the club was VAT registered.

Frightening to think how much players and clubs would have avoided paying given that the legislative changes and loophole closures were so recent.

Tell you what it's never boring supporting efc, we are never happy or some aren't. People see managers interviews and we all have different interpretations, media say we are after a player who we have never heard and when they don't sign we go mad haha

Deepay in my opinion has done nothing for Utd, and I don't think he will make us any better. He has been in prem for years and what has he done, not much yet some fans moaning we never got him, some happy we never spent 21 mill.

For the first time in years we got a manager that has no loyalties to players and has told them the truth. I am glad as this proves we are going in the right way, some players deserve a good send off some don't.

Let's all get behind the club and rk, see this season out and I think we will finish well. Rk will get his players and ship moyes and rm players out. So let's just watch and enjoy the rest of the season and see what rk does with his players and team next season

I think we have all been through a real torrid time. Supporters have done what they could to remain positive, but under Martinez, decisions made were just so plainly wrong and the club/ team took such a big backwards step. Some fans could see it happening early on. Others were ever optomistic and carried on hoping that things were going to improve. Eventually we went into a rapid spiral that got just about everyone down.

When Moshiri came in and things really started to improve again, some fans could see it. Others (myself included) were a little more sceptical. We had seen it all before. But looking at what was happening with the club, particularly with Koeman and Walsh coming in. that has slowly opened our eyes. Some are still in the "negative" mode. but us positive ones should not be giving them a hard time. I can remember exactly how easy it is to get in the cynical mode. And how hard it is to get out of it. As true football CLUB supporters, we need to just gently show them that progress is being made.

Point out the good things. Eventually they will see that they are stuck in a time loop. I have said it before. we are a traditional FOOTBALL CLUB. We are not Everton PLC nor do we evert want to be. We have millionaire players of course. But the board do make us remember our history and do the odd thing that makes us different to all the PLC businesses that are the so called top 4. In my view there has only ever been a top 1!

Thanks mate. Like I said. it's hard to get out of the negative mode. when you truly believe bad decisions keep getting made. But I can at last see progress. Mirallas is a classic example. He looked pretty rubbish for 2 years. but he is getting his mogo back. Baines and Coleman too. I can see some players are looking their age and need replacing, but those 3 are still young and good enough to grace most teams. They did not becomee bad players overnight. Something within the club is better. probably Koeman talking straight. Now we just need to make sure signings are the right ones. Then bring through some more youth. and with a bit of luck. to be continued.

Also just wanna say good luck to Antony Evans, who has joined Morecambe on loan and all the other young lads on loan. Hopefully some of them may come back better players and make moves towards the first team.

Completely messed that up.

Makes me wonder if people actually watch games. First hull sign niasse on loan and now Swansea linked with kone. If I was a manager I would not even think about buying these players. I would rather play kids or look at the lower leagues for a younger player.

Hi Ed i think we could be in for a busy couple of weeks with ins and outs in this transfer window, i like R Ks comments he wants quality not quantity this man is the real deal, he says it as it really is, very refreshing after the last manager we had, GuernseyBlue

{Ed025's Note - i hope the board think the same GB, ronnie knows what he wants and if he gets it then then the future looks bright mate..

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jan 2017 19:11:05
I honestly think that is business done. RK stated he only wants quality and that is fair enough. You say two weeks I say it maybe a little late in the day now. Lookman and Schneiderlin was already prepared ground. Any 'quality' players we want now have or are being eyed up by Champions League Teams with the exception of Chelsea who have deep deep pockets. Their parent Clubs will hold out till near the end of the Window in the hope of driving up the price. Ergo it is catch 22, as we only want quality and that quality will be chased by others, can we compete with the likes of Chelsea say. That leaves the dregs for everyone else and we at least do not need to panic anymore.

Think we could look at what is happening at Spurs as an example of how long it takes to turn a team around. Their manager has developed a really good side, but it's taken him two to three seasons to do it. With a combination of good signings and youth they now have a very strong team, and they are also building a new ground.
We are probably two years behind them with the team, and hopefully the ground. But we are now moving forward. We no longer have to sell to survive, and we are producing/ bringing in some very talented youngsters.
As supporters we should trust in what the club are trying to do, and who knows by 2020 we might have a top four side, and a new stadium.
Whatever the outcome these next few years are going to be very exciting. 👍
