I think we have to all calm down a bit over Eto'o. The guy has averaged 1 goal in 2 matches or better everywhere he's played including Chelsea last year. I've seen a few people mention players from the lower leagues like Rhodes but in my eyes this would be just as much of a risk (see beckford and Bent both consistent scorers at there level) for no guarantee of success, at a massively inflated price that home grown players seem to demand. Having listened to Roberto's comments after the Arsenal game I can only imagine Eto'o has accepted our terms regarding the contract as Martinez stated quite clearly on Saturday that he was too expensive. Anyway i'm waffling here, I trust the manager, and think he not only be able to teach Rom some new tricks but will also pop up with some important goals this year.

I remember when we signed an old centre forward and me mates at the time said he'd only signed for the
last pay day.
He was Andy Gray.
If you know your history?

Come on guys, yes I would prefer a £5-10m pound young striker but let's look at the facts if we sign Eto'o on a free we have a 33 year old striker who has scored goals at the highest level for close to 15 years, the red rubbish have a 32 year old who has had 2 decent seasons and have spent £4m. I know which one I would rather have! Trust in Bobby!

This is a rumour site. Hope this Etoo stuff is just a rumour and is a smokescreen for something more exciting, more long term, more Everton like.
I see Etoo as a user looking for another big pay day and his salary could be a demotivator for other lesser paid first teamers. He could a also be off for African Nations in the New Year. Not even sure that if he is out of contract, he would still be signable after deadline day.
If he wears the shirt you have to support him but he's not my choice.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think he's retired from international football.

It is being reported that we are close to signing Eto on a 2 year deal
I hope not he never set the world alight last season for Chelsea and in my opinion would be another waste of money we can Ill afford after Kone, Robles, Alcaraz and also in my opinion McGeady
We have spent a lot of money this summer probably too much on one player but after the money we have brought in from sales in the last few windows as well as the increase in TV money surely we can do better than an ageing has been looking for one last pay day

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Everyone keeps going on about money from previous sales, that money dosen't sit in a drawer waiting for us to spend it, it will have been paid into the Bank to service the overdraft, so we may never see that money. We will just have to wait to see if there is any more money in thee kitty, but I think only loans now.

A lot of you seem to think eto is a bad signing. Why? He was Chelsea's best striker last year, Has great control and awareness, likes winning trophies and romelu will learn from
Him. If the wages come down to a reasonable price I think it's a great move coyb!

An awful lot of negativity about Samuel Eto'o on here.
Guys, do the sums, he averaged one goal in every two games for Barcelona and then Chelsea.
16 million for Balloteli and it's being deemed 'a steal' by the press.
100k a week for Eto'o might be the best business we've done since we signed Peter Reid who we were told at the time was past it!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

25 Aug 2014 23:51:43
Peter Reid was 26 when he signed in 1982 hardly past even then, it was considered a risk because of a bad leg break not because he was past it

Can somebody please tell me i'm having a nightmare. Reports tonight we're going to give etoo a two year deal. what the hell is going on? The word ambition has been thrown around a lot this summer. This would be a big backward step. Devoid of ambition. If it was 2008 then yes give etoo a two year deal. But its 2014 and etoo is now. well old seems to be the only real age we have for him. We shouldn even be offering him a one year deal, he was very poor last year, for a top club so why would he improve us? Surely there has got to be better value in the market than that? Give me Welbeck, Hernandez, Remy, Rhodes, Ings and lots more over etoo. Terrible decision I hope i'm sleeping!

This isn't a negative or complaining post, so I'm not having a go at Moyes, or Kenwright, nor am I jumping to conclusions just because he's scored twice, but does anyone know why we didn't sign Eric Dier a few years back?

Neville was on MOTD last week saying that despite his shortcomings, you could see he was a good players then and he'd be perfect for us now. Most people assumed we'd sign him then and I remember someone on here posting at the time saying we have to 'sign him now', so why didn't we? Him and Stones would give us the most technically able, exciting centre back pairing in the league for the next 10 years.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Not sure if we had the chance to AB, I think Lisbon sent him over on loan to beef him up abit but he never came on for the first team so they recalled him.

Weve got a 15 year old swedish striker in training with us, he's got a pic of sturridge on his twitter (hes not a liverpool fan, he just likes sturridge) and no suprise our fans have started giving him personal abuse, he's 15, 15, friggin 15!, how stupid and sad, no wonder we don't get kids in like this more often, what if one day one of these kids turn out to be the new ronaldo, we didn't sign him because he was scared of joining because of our personic fans, I know everyone on here is bigger than that, i'm just saying its very embarrising the way these people associate themselves with everton

{Ed025's Note - all teams have fans that cant see the wood for the trees swan, and i agree its very sad mate..

Hi there,

I've come over from the United page to hear some of your views on Welbeck.

At United, we rate him very highly, the only thing lacking from his game is composure, the chances he gets where he doesn't get time to think he buries them it's just the ones where he has to think which he at times blunders.

Most don't want him to leave and I'm very surprised to see a fair amount of your fans saying you wouldn't want him.

He's a typical Everton player imo. Hard working, young, british, nearing the finished article, etc.

I think that IF he ends up with you he'll be a bigger hit than Lukaku (just my opinion).

It'll be very interesting to hear what happens but as I said United fans (mostly) want him to stay because as soon as he nails that composure in his game he's going to be a terrific forward.

if we had Welbeck fit for the opening 2 games I think we genuinely would have won both, his ability to pull and stretch defenders is remarkable, something that United were lacking last season and are lacking currently (until Di Maria signs).

Do any of you want Welbeck?

Ed, (opinions) do you think Welbeck will Leave Manchester United this summer and do you see him at Everton or elsewhere?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - i personally dont see him leaving jose, RVP seems to play when he feels like it, so it will leave you short up front, he has got some good aspects to his game but as you say finishing is not one of them, so would i want him?..yes..would he be my first choice..no..

ED025,

Last year RVP was a disgrace, ran away with his tail between his legs when it started getting tough.

This year, even though he's good friends with LVG I can't see him getting away with anything like that.

that said though, it looks as if Welbeck and Hernandez are off, I think Di Maria will play up top like Robben did for Holland and James Wilson will come in as the 4th striker (who is shaping up brilliantly).

although it might leave us short in EPL experience I don't think we'll be in that bad of a position.

Welbeck's only poor part of his game is his finishing, which admittedly is a major part of a forwards job role.

would you agree that if he nails that composure he would one of the best british forwards, only behind Rooney imo. his game is so much more rounded than Sturridge's (apart from the finishing).

Also, I'm a bit concerned as to WHY he's leaving.

Welbeck can play out wide if we go 4-3-3, up top and at a push could probably cover wing back. He's a very versatile player.

I think United will regret letting him go though.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i agree with your assessment of RVP jose, but to be honest cant see danny becoming a great forward mate..

25 Aug 2014 17:19:54
I can pull and stretch defenders too, should of seen me photobomb johan hammars selfie by pulling his ears 3 years ago

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Aug 2014 17:21:15
Personally I think that welbeck would be a good addition for us but, depending on the asking price I would be skeptical. He is really quick and would definitely be an option off of the bench or as an alternative if Lukaku gets injured. For me he would be better than Eto'o (with his ridiculous wage demands) but whether or not he would be the type of player we need, I'm unsure.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - exactly my feelings bloo..

The talk at the minute is of a loan deal which could work out great you.

for me, Welbeck needs a club like Everton and I think he's perfect for the club, I don't mean in terms of stature I mean in terms of the way you build players.

ED025, I can't see him becoming a great forward but he's more than capable of being a 20 goal a season man.

I think he'd be a great fit at Everton, tactically he seems easy to adjust, his work rate is incredible and IF you were to sign him be it permanent or loan I think you would see the best of him.

I hope you get him on loan to be honest, you'll help improve his game big time and I think he could be the difference between 7th and 5th for your lot.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jeez how desperate are you to get rid of him? Welbeck equals Bambi on ice. Try advertising him on someone else's site.

Agree0 Disagree0

He is a good forward, not a great one. Certainly not as good as Sturridge. This is the level of player we can attract. let's not kid ourselves.

Agree0 Disagree0

Daveyboy,

I love Welbeck, but he's not going to stay at United. Funnily enough I quite like Everton, the way they're run, etc.

He'll go on to have a better career than Lukaku who is just as bad as Balotelli.

Try finding out why Chelsea wanted rid of him so badly.

Smeggs,

he has the potential to be as good as Andy Cole imo.

the only part of his game lacking in comparison to Sturridge is the finishing, he's an all around better player bar that one problem.

he also steps up when it matters. Always superb for England (shut a lot of people up in the WC with how good he was). Not to mention in the UCL against Real Madrid, etc.

Top player who learns very well.

If he was called Danielo Welbechhio he would be of the most coveted young forward in the world.

25 Aug 2014 16:38:28
Lots of talk about Eto or Welbeck. If we are looking at a squad player, then it has to be a young player on the way up rather than an older player looking for a pension payday. Welbeck wins hands down. However, I would hope that we have sufficient to buy someone in the middle. ie a goalscorer who still has 5 years minimum. This means Bony or Remy or another from another league. I would opt for the latter. I still believe we have 10 million to spend, so keep your fingers crossed that we bring someone in from Hungary or Bosnia or somewhere who can bang in 15 goals a season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - i cant make my mind up on welbeck degs, does some things very well and has pace, but cant hit a bulls arse with a banjo!..

25 Aug 2014 17:03:32
I don't know how we could want either, one is 34 (maybe) and would cost over 100k a week, the other is incredibly useless, has pace in short bursts and works hard but can't finish, constantly gives it away, attempts flicks every time he gets it and fails every time, can't hold it up, can't beat a man and if he was born anywhere else he would be in the championship or second tier divisions in france or portugal, if he was still english but played for any other club he would have no caps for england, look at the daily mail (awful paper) comments on him from utd fans, they can't stand him, nor any utd fans I've ever spoke to who go the game, he's just bloody awful, says a lot even sunderland fans are not too sure theyd have him back, give me those vagner love rumours back please

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - its not like you to be so disparaging about another clubs player swan.. :)

25 Aug 2014 16:27:31
Hi Ed I have a real feeling that all this talk of Eto and Wellbeck is just a smokescreen for Roberto, s real targets of Remy or Bacca he keeps his cards close to his chest, I really think that we are going to see some quality signings this week, keep up the good work Eds

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - i would love you to be right GB, i have a feeling that none of the above will be coming though mate..

Agree mate. Striker will be surprised name I guess. Diame would love to see him. Exciting tough center back must.

Eto is an ageing mercenary, Wellbeck could not find his own ass, with both hands.PLEASE Bill, go the extra mile and bring in W. Bony. The cost would not be that much more and may be the difference between top 6 and top 4!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - the wages may be the problem with bony JCW, his agent is asking for £100,000 per week apparently..

25 Aug 2014 06:11:10
In my last post I said Everton were rubbish and it has continued since the Palace game last year. I got slated on the Leicester result but my feelings were honest. Having said that I thought Everton played more like they can against Arsenal. The last 10 minutes we took the foot of the gas, thought we had it won and did a Moyes tactic of defending deep. Taking off Lukaku, even though the performance warranted it gave Arsenal a psychological breather. They felt less threatened on the counter and got rewarded by throwing things forward. Barry was brilliant but tired towards the end. I hoped Besic would have covered him in the last 15 minutes rather than put on a couple of wingers hoping for a counter.

Would anyone take 10th and a Europa league final?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Only if we won it

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Aug 2014 09:57:12
No you get nothing for being in the final?

Agree0 Disagree0

Not for me, would have to be winning it and the champions league qualifying that would bring to consider that.

Agree0 Disagree0

If we would win yes because that would give us a champions league spot.

Agree0 Disagree0

10th would be a major backward step regardless of a final. We shouldn't be finishing any lower than 7th as a minimum and i'd be disapointed with that to be honest. We do need to win a trophy now though preferably the europa but i'd take any, its been far too long.

Agree0 Disagree0

No cause if we finish 10th would mean we are no where near champions league standards

Martinez has admitted he is looking at eto and wellbeck but has said it would take a lot of money to get either of them. I've got to be honest I wouldn't be excited by either of them. If I had the choice i'd say wellbeck because he's younger but surely to god if they are going to cost a lot of money then remy is a better option than both of them? He's not even mentioned, i'm just a humble evertonian and not a manager or a coach I know but its a no brainer to me.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

25 Aug 2014 11:21:59
I'd prefer Wellbeck more versatile, however to bring in anyone of quality is going to cost big money and the nearer deadline the more it will cost!

Agree0 Disagree0

Not a big fan of versatility when it comes to strikers. Yes Lukaku can play out wide but the real goal getters just ply their trade up front, through the middle. We need a Alan Shearer type.goal getter and just plays one position.
