Can play it out but can't defend, very slow and despite being 6 foot 3 he is very weak, not good enough

Agree0 Disagree0

He can't get in the Liverpool defence so why should he get into ours.even rival fans say we have one of the strongest back four of the premiership. No place for agger in it

Great defender but far too injury prone. He would be a main part of the squad for them over the park if he could keep fit and injury free

At MK Dons (our local team) and have to say am loving every minute of this. With both my young lads who wear there Everton shirts and MK scarfs (just what we do). Looking at this would rather have Eto than Welbeck any day.

I think eto'o is the perfect signing for us. The one thing we lacked was experience in europe and in winning big games up front and he gives us that now.

Advice to the younger players and especially Lukaku will be invaluable and to get him on a free, although high wages, is a sound bit of business.

I still think we need another wide player as atsu seems a year too early to me and we need right back cover urgenly as stones is not a rb and hibbert is no longer good enough.

I can't believe this is the same Everton that had such dour transfer windows under Moyes. Martinez works absolute wonders with the funds he has and seems to show no fear once a target is identified.

On another note. Mk dons have just hit a third against united. Hilarious!

The signing of Eto is a backward step--well past his best.Presumably he will play in the Europa Cup against the lesser teams.Only hope that reports of a 2 year deal are wide of the mark.

{Ed025's Note - for me wirral he is now an everton player, so shall start with a clean slate and get my undying support while he wears the shirt mate..

For any of the Eto'o doubters, have a word with yourselves, a little over a year ago we could only dream of getting this type of player in, in reality what could have happened when Moyes went is that we could have brought in an Ian Holloway type manager and fell completely into the wilderness.
I for one am more than happy with how far we have progressed COYB

I posted yesterday, as many others, against the signing of Eto'o. It was in my opinion wrong.
Well he has signed. He is a Blue now and gets my 100% support. I've ate humble pie before and would love Eto'o to be a Martinez masterstroke.

No one can argue that footballers are not having longer careers these days. A player is now a top athlete and sticks to rigorous diets and training plans. A player that is 2 times Champions League winner and also has a vast array of other trophies must have pretty much stuck to his rigorous plan and regime. It goes without saying that Et'oo falls in to this category of player. I hope that we have signed a gem and the big headed one at Chelski made a huge mistake letting him go. With just a bit of luck, he will regain full fitness and go on for another 3 years banging in loads of goals for us.

I feel the Eto'o signing could be a master stroke, reminds me of Andy Gray signing.

Could be the personality needed to push a young talented team into the big time, we have a great mixture of youth and experience that are hungry for success.

We will win something this year I feel 'Europa League' will be the one and Eto'o and Barry's experience will be vital.

Good evening all, i'm reading posts and i'm totally dismayed by people moaning about Eto'o before he's even signed! This lad is a world class striker, at one stage he was the highest paid player in the world. I remember watching him a few years ago praying for the day we'd be able to sign players of his stature.

Has anybody even seen his career stats? in club football he has played 452 games and scored 233 goals and in international games played 117 and scored 56! that's some record. Yeah he might be 33 and maybe has lost a yard of pace, but star quality doesn't diminish as you get older. this lad will score goals for us and what a role model for the youngsters at the club. He is also a massive financial name and will increase our profile world wide and most notably in Africa. But the biggest plus is that this is a player who wants to play for us, he is taking a wage drop and could get a bigger pay day else where! So lads give him your full support, we are Everton after all.

I can remember the posts on this site Ed when we signed Barry, " too old, too slow, too expensive, looking for last big payday etc etc." look how that turned out, we were all clamouring for him to be signed permanently by the end of the season. Barry has brought on McCarthy, just as Eto will do with Rom. Eto will score goals, he has done throughout his career. Great signing, impact from the bench or starting up front with Rom wide, options everywhere and plenty of goals in him still. Can't wait to see him score at Goodison.

Pretty excited about this guys. When the news broke that Moyes was leaving sure some of us thought it could bring fresh ideas but I don't think anyone imagined we'd have a squad with the strength that we have at the moment with still a week left in the window.

ST: Lukaku, Eto'o, Naismith, Kone

Wide players: Mirallas, Pienaar,
McGeady, Atsu

MID: Barkley, McCarthy, Barry, Besic, Gibson, Osman

CB: Jagielka, Distin, Stones, Alcaraz, Duffy

LB/RB: Baines, Oviedo, Garbutt, Coleman, Hibbert

GK: Howard, Robles

If we can find some a good defender who can cover CB and RB I'll be stoked with our squad.

I know a lot of people aren't over the moon about Eto'o, but look at it this way:

- Lukaku is our striker for the future, but he needs a mentor, not another young challenger: Few know the game better than Eto'o.

- He's taken a huge wage cut, and will cost us only £6m across 2 years: You won't get many good, reliable strikers for that price (Looking at you, Kone). Liverpool spent £4m on Lambert and will be paying similar wages and will use him far less. I, personally, like Lambert, but they've bought him as a gimmick, we'll use Eto'o.

He has incredibly big game and European experience, which we need.

He is marketing gold. Sure, he's not the player he was, but if you'd have said 5 years ago the greatest player in African history would play for us, I'd have laughed it off. He is HUGE in Africa as well as around the world.

He could be pretty anonymous, in which case nothing ventured, nothing gained, or a master stroke by Bobby.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree AB. Eto will be good tutor for Rom.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi all

I read these pages everyday but rarely post, but.

I think it will be great having Eto'o playing for us, think of what Lukaku will learn from him not to mention our young bloods - Hope, McAlney, Long to name a few, they will have a genuine world star to watch and learn from and who knows could save us millions in future seasons as these lads might just make it with someone like Eto'o educating them.

Lets not forget he will also be hopefully banging in a few goals. His European experience could also be massive influence.

Not to mention great marketing potential

hi lads carnt believe Roberto is going to sign eto it goes against his belief in youth we have distin on the wrong side of 30 struggling in defence with jags although distin is the better defender but eto the only reason I can see for signing him is experience because he is not a top striker anymore and at 90k a week? bony only 10k a week more bobby usually spot on but this smacks of desperation there must be better out there for a lot less

Believable0 Unbelievable0

55k per week over 2 year deal. On a free that is good business if he can offer us something at the top end. Even for one year that is less than 3m, about half what we paid Chelsea to loan Lukaku last season

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm not sure it's the best we could have done but I believeRom will learn a lot from eto'o in the 2 years he's with us so might be worth it just for that.

Looks like eto is a go then. Looks like a bit of a no lose situation except if the rumours are true and he'll be on 90k pw as may upset our wage structure a bit. Overall quite happy with summer although would like see top cb joining too. can't wait for besic to get a run out either!

We have to ask ourselves. does he have ability? The answer is obviously yes. Then we have to ask ourselve. do EFC have a decent system for putting new potential signings through a rigorous fitness test before signing them? The answer to this is also yes. In which case I am sure we would have had him doing sprints and shuttles all the way through checking out times and recovery times. Far be it for us to judge a players fitness levels and judge without knowledge. We can only assume that Eto is as fit as a butchers dog.

The more I think about it (ive been up 3 hours straight doing nothing but thinking about this potential signing) the more the samuel eto'o transfer interests me, at first I was all 'no he's possibly 40 and wants loads of dosh' but now i'm more calm and have really come to terms with it, IF he joins (i can just imagine waking up and seeing he rejected us and went to saudi arabia or something) I know, at most he will be on 70k a week, this is the same as pienaar, yes its a 2 year deal, I think he will be a DECENT addition, let's look at the negatives to this, his age is up for debate, but in 2010 he was outsprinting 3 defenders, running the whole length of the field and only being stopped by the goalkeeper tackling him, if he can do that at the supposed age of 37, not bad, he has though, evidently, lost a yard or 2 of pace (not slow though), he won't beat people as easy and may fall behind play at times, his wage could be too excessive and he isn't as good as he used to be (seriously, who his age is still as good as they were 4 years ago), fitness could be a problem, especially seeing as our training sessions cause more injuries than a steroid induced dolph lundgren, he also has no sell on value (hes free so meh) and won't get any better (again, who does?), now let's look at the positives, he's a fantastic finisher, can still outpace most centre backs, has a phenominal goalscoring record which hasn't shown signs of regressing, even at chelsea, he could help develop rom, he has mountains of experience, will provide guaranteed goals, useful off the bench, gives us another option all together, the best thing? Its friggin ETO'O, not that long ago this man (pensioner?) was one of the best strikers in the world, the worst thing? The african cup of nations in january, he still hasn't retired so won't be available when that comes around (like kone, cept kone won't be going), I do love bobby, I am unsure about this signing although the more I think about it the more I seem to like the idea, of course el tacticos record in transfers so far is hit and miss, hits, j mac (engine), barry (the testicles, produces what we need, yet doesn't get the credit), del boy (andddd iiiiiiiiii will always love youuu), miss', alcaraz (inconsistent defender?), kone (never fit but owns a magic camel), mcgeady (apparently he's been a bad buy, I disagree but will put him here as that seems to be the vote from fickle *cough* I mean wonderfully knowledgable everton fans), joel (straq and kevs love child), still up for debat-ables, besic (snide) and atsu (bless you), let's see what the rest of the window brings us, i'm still holding out for ronaldo, messi and reus but if bobby brings in robben, aguero and falcao then I suppose that'll have to do, has henen signed yet?

Haha Swan it's posts like this that make me glad you didn't stop posting on this site.
I'm with you on Eto'o. Without doubt the man, no matter how old, is talented. On a free transfer we couldn't really argue providing we are not paying him daft amounts each week. His experience will be invaluable,he has won numerous honours in different countries both in a team and individual. I know which geriatric I would rather have in my team. It has to be the one with major silverware over the one that holds the record for capping the most jars of beetroot on an 8 hour shift in Kirkby. The deal does seem to make sense the more you think about it.

Hey eds what do you think personally about etoo. I for one wouldn't have gone for him, but with a little bit of Robbo magic maybe we could get him to scoring between 12/15 goals next season. That for me would be a good return of investment. He is effectively costing Everton about 5m quid. One only has to look at Long, my fellow countryman costing Southampton 12m this season who only scored 4 goals last season, I think that is a bargain. He is a player of immense experience with 3 CL medals to his name compare him to Ricky Lambert who cost 4m plus wages to the RS. I think it is good business.
If we can get Naismith, None and Etoo up to 12 goals each which looking at Kevin could be more and Romelu up to somewhere around 20 goals or maybe even more with the possibility of getting either Welbeck or Hernandez with around 10 goals I do honestly think we will have a fighting chance of a coveted CL spot. We would have also a fighting chance of winning Europa League which I think Etoo is still good for goals there. Or with a bit of luck get Etoo and Naismith up to 15 goals or more and Romelu up to 25 and maybe Welbeck/Hernandez up to near 15 goals and some midfielder into double figures dare I say it we could be title contenders.
Remember Etoo had limited time with Chelsea and still scored 9 league goals in 21 appearances it is still a decent return. With Everton he should have more game time and should by the laws of averages score more goals than last season. All I am saying is give the man a chance, we are already killing him.

Typical negative attitude from Swan and a few of you. If it was a last pay day for eto do you really think he would come to everton. He has clubs in qutar that would pay him a lot more. Christ even somebody like west ham would give him more a week.
Just 4 years ago the guy was considered one of the best strikers in world football.and we're moaning about getting him on a free. 2 years ago we would have been looking at samaras on a free. There just is no pleasing some of you.

I cannot claim to have years of familiarity with Sam Eto'o's play, so I found a decent clip on You Tube last week showed a lot of his play and some goals for Chelsea last year.

He appeared aggressive, had some quickness, and appeared to be quite the pest in the 18 yard box.

He is bound to have a chip on his shoulder, being told that he didn't deserve a place with a top team. Lots of international experience at a nil upfront price.

A better reward over risk ratio it seems that the lunatic the Reds just signed.

160 minutes if good football this year, only 20 minutes bad. It could be worse (QPR or ManU)

By the way, finally found a 6 pack of Chiang here in the States, any warnings?

Oh how I wish this could be us, as we have been strongly linked throughout the summer!
