I read a story that back in the late 1970s we had an opportunity to sign the teenage Ruud Gullit, but didn't pursue it. The manager at the time was Gordon Lee - who was a decent man that took us close, but just couldn't take us that final step - and who was well known for not liking "stars". Can you imagine how many other talented players we missed out on because we've had managers - albeit honest and hard-working - that were stuck in their defensive & negative ways about how they want their teams to play and the sort of players they waned in their formations? Isn't it refreshing how RM has shaped the team's tactics and formation - while requiring an organisational discipline - but also creating an expansive style that allows players to be more progressive, exciting, and attack-minded?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - it is sid, i think we are blessed to have bobby mate, if he cant take us that final step, i feel that maybe no one can..

03 Apr 2014 23:38:01
This is the sort of refreshing, inspiring and informative posts I like to read. Thanks sid, never knew we were even linked with ruud, but like u say if back then we had a forward thinking manager who wasnt afraid to break the defensive mould and play exciting attacking football, I have no doubt we would have signed other truely great players to have played along side him. We can all mourn on what could have been in the past, but we are now in the present and hope bobby takes that risk from this summer transfer window and transforms us from underdogs for a top 4 place to regular title and european challengers. Think lukaku can certainly move us towards that transformation and some other shrewd acquisitions to replace aging players such as ossie and peanuts (which I think he's got spot on this season with deloufeu and mcgeady) can really take us places. Breath of fresh air watching the mighty blues this season and feel 2nd season syndrome under bobby could never occur based on the style of play our squad have adapted so well and quickly into. Money needs to be made available to martinez and the world could quite literally be our oyster. Consider us to be a seasons progress behind the red side and look how their season is panning out, whereas last season they were nowhere near title contenders. Once the system truely clicks across the whole squad( under 18's and 21's included) and martinez buys players for our present and future rather than just the loans, I believe we will have turned that corner and would be difficult for both opposition and pundits to write off.

{Ed025's Note - good post that craig..

Our younger players - especially those at the U-21 level - seem to fall into three categories:
(1) Those like Barkley, Stones, Lukaku, and Deulofeu (all aged just 20) who are good enough to play for the first team or like Browning and Garbutt who are worthy of a place in the first team squad and on the subs' bench.
(2) Those who aren't deemed ready for our first team squad yet and need to get competitive football by going out on loan to lower-division clubs. I wonder how many of those - in particular Duffy and Velios - will be retained this Summer.
(3) Those who still need to have time to develop in our own U-18 and U-21 setups before having a period on loan and/or showing the ability & attitude to move straight into our first team squad.
If my analysis is correct, then which of the younger players do other posters expect to leave in the Summer?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I reckon it'd be Gueye, Vellios and Duffy. But I say Duffy only because he won't be getting passed Stones into the 2nd choice for the right center back position. So he'll probs leave for more game time.

Agree0 Disagree0

Apparently Gueye played a good game for the U-21s this evening and scored the side's two goals. Did anyone go to the match and can give a review?

Thinking guaye may actually have a role to play at efc in martinez system, but that will all hang in the balance based on magaye's determination, willingness to go out on loan to further his strengthening progress and finally his heart to become a efc player. He isn't the quickest of wingers, but certainly has potential, bags of skill and knows where the net is to still be a good winger. Not all about pace on the wing although it does help. The best wingers in the world are blessed with both skill, pace and finishing ability (ronaldo, messi), if maguye can progress two of the 3 qualities, he would still be a good asset to our squad and importantly still has age on his side to progress his skill.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - as much as i hope im wrong craig, i just dont see him reaching the required level mate..

I myself think gueye will end up leaving this summer! I don't think Duffy will be a world beater!more like championship standard!i think that stones will be the only prospect that will get a real chance next season but I'd prefer it a few more were givin experience especially if we get 5th and are against average opposition in the group stage ov the Europa league!plus we'd need fresh legs with the amount of games we'd have to play!

Agree0 Disagree0

Martinez could see Gueye developing into a decent back up cm. I watched a few reserve games last season and he was played in the cm role a couple of times and just behind the striker aswell and he played excellently. Remember a couple of seasons ago he had a little run in the first team grabbed a few goals and proved to be pretty useful

I think we should keep hold of him for 1 more season and then make a decision on him

What if Liverpool want us to get fourth so that they can win the league? We face Man City at home and they would need us to win that.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't think they NEED us to do anything - it's completely in their own hands.

Hello, boys and girls, I'm back - apparently my posts have been missed by one or two you ;-)
So - what's been happening while my original username "Cowpat Sid" has been (and still is) banned? I still don't know why it was banned. I don't think I was ever abusive or offensive - maybe just repetitive or boring or plain unfunny!
I've re-registered as "Cowpat Sid 2". I have been posting using other usernames (all properly registered), but I've unregistered all of those now at the request of Ed025 - who I've always found to be one of the good guys. My apologies to the Eds for using multiple usernames - I'll just use "Cowpat Sid 2" from now on. I wonder if any of you recognised me as one of those other usernames?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sydney blue by any chance?
oh and welcome back m8

Agree0 Disagree0

Good to see you back as Cowpat Sid. I know someone else who'll be made up - my mate's lad Archie, who thinks the name is dead funny. Both Archie & his dad, Dean, are Leeds fans but like to come on here for the banter. So, from Archie, I'll say, "Welcome back, Cowpat Sid!"

Agree0 Disagree0

No - I'm not Sydney Blue.

Agree0 Disagree0

I've known a few Leeds United fans and they've all been top blokes.
Having been an Everton fan - man and boy - for over 50 years, I have an ambivalent attitude towards some (I stress some, not all) of the Leeds United managers' and players' for their "gamesmanship" over the years, but their fans have always struck me as being proper fans with the same integrity and honesty as Everton fans - supporting their club and staying loyal and true through good times and bad times.

Agree0 Disagree0

Nice one Tezza, Archie's made up! Cheers Cowpat, good to have banter with proper fans but think on Massimo's comin to get you! MOT

Just another bitter post from me. about the lack of bottle showed by the FA. I read about the reduced allocation of tickets at the recent away Arsenal game which they justified by "Health and Safety". As we all know, if you ever want to get away with something, you quote the old "health and safety" bit and nobody can argue a thing about it. Then there are the "fair play rules", which clearly state that monies generated have to be from footballing generated profits. Look at the top of the table (yes it hurts) and see an example of a club that has blatantly disregarded these rules and have run at a loss of approx 100mill pa for the last 3 years. I suggest we also get a rich owner in and when the FA query our finances, we blame them on health and safety!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

With some of those clubs, the words I think of are not "health & safety", but "wealth & shady" ;-)

Agree0 Disagree0

Hiya Sid, how it going? Long time no speak, hows the missus?

Anyone know when the City game will be confirmed? Making my annual pilgrimage and need to sort out transport!

Is there a minimum time before a game that they can move it for TV coverage?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - its still down as sat 3rd of may BT at 3 pm mate..

Yeah, but it still says subject to change on the ticketing page.

Agree0 Disagree0

The Premier League fixtures currently set for 3:00pm on Saturday, 3rd May, are:
Arsenal v Sunderland
Aston Villa v Hull City
Chelsea v Norwich City
Crystal Palace v Liverpool
Everton v Manchester City
Manchester United v Sunderland
Newcastle United v Cardiff City
Stoke City v Fulham
Swansea City v Southampton
West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur

I'd expect 4 of these matches to be televised live - it's just a question of which ones. As it stands, I'd have thought that our match was a favourite to be televised, but I guess it all depends on how the various teams are set (re the title, the European places, and relegation) by the time the TV companies make their choices.
Anyone like to pick the four he/she thinks it will be?

Agree0 Disagree0

If I had to guess Sid I'd say:

Everton v Man City (surely?!)
Crystal Palace v Liverpool (they're always on)
United v Sunderland

I would expect that the other game will either be one of Arsenal, Chelsea or Spurs games, or perhaps a relegation game, so maybe Stoke Fulham, assuming Fulham aren't down by then.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i think sky said a couple of weeks ago that all liverpool, chelsea, arsenal and city games would be televised live...so that will be the 4 probably..

I forgot about Monday night football, so I could imagine BT having the Saturday lunchtime match and Sky having the Saturday evening, Sunday lunchtime, Sunday afternoon, and Monday night matches. That means Sky could be sure to show every match played by those four teams named by Ed025 even if BT haven't chosen one if those clubs' matches.
For the matches currently scheduled for 3rd May, there are some that will have no bearing on the title, Europe or relegation and surely shouldn't (?) be shown live: Aston Villa v Hull City and probably Swansea City v Southampton and West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur. I reckon that leaves a choice of 5 matches from 7 for live showing.

I have not posted for a while. But here goes with some info. re my worries and concerns that our lack of goals (if Lukaku leaves) will cost us and so far lack of signing of players who will contribute goals. I hear that RM is saying that nothing is finalised on Lukaku. it will be dealt with at the end of the season. He adds that he has been stockpiling the monies that came in for Felli, Anichebe and Jelly. This added to Premier League monies will mean that we need to create a squad of 21 players. If we qualify for Europe, that squad will need to be 27. That is an extra 6 players. RM says that some of these can be promising kids but the rest will be signings. I know this season is not over yet, but it looks like we are in for a very busy summer. let's hope he has some real quality lined up.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - your right degs, and lets hope this world cup does not inflate the prices too much, and that we get some business done early..

Forget the premier league money as that goes straight to the bank like it does every season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Whichever way you look at it Mike S, he is saying we are going on a bit of a spending spree. He is also on about putting in an indoor pitch at Finch Farm and some sleeping quarters for youngsters and generally updating the place. He used the word stockpile and the figures for players we need came from RM's mouth.

Agree0 Disagree0

What I like is that RM is talking about improving the club's training facilities, the development of our young players, the deeper squad we need to compete in Europe and domestically - which all sounds like a man with a longer term plan who isn't going to move on if a so-called "bigger" club comes in for him. Of course, it'd be mighty difficult for him - especially being a Catalan - to turn down a club like Barcelona, but RM sounds like a man who'll see his work-in-progress at Everton through to a very successful (and well established) level. If and when RM does move on, then it seems odds-on that Duncan Ferguson is being groomed to be manager - whatever some supporters' views are of his behaviour and character. Anyone got any other insights?

Agree0 Disagree0

Your post was an interesting read Sid, I think Dunc could end up be a great manager for us in the future and we have a good set up for him to be groomed under

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - im probably out of line here tony, but to me he does not seem to be typical management material..

Degsy! Great to see you mate, look forward to locking horns again. Previously you were talking about our lack of goals this season. Well in your absence we have stuck a couple past Cardiff, 3 past Swansea, 3 past Newcastle and 3 past Fulham with 9 different scorers (although one was an own goal). In Roberto's first season we are on course to score more goals than we did in any one season under David Moyes. But youve now turned attention to next season and I agree. The inevitable return of Lukaku and Europe on the horizon means we have some work to do this summer. But isn't it much nicer to be worrying about whose coming in than the usual whose going out? (Other than the loans of ofcourse) Whose your shout to fill the striker void? I hope for Loric Remy

Cowpat I think a lot of this Martinez potentially being on the radar of other clubs has popped up at just the right time. We have a sniff of top 4. And the smell is quite nice. So the establishment need to destabilise us somehow. Few false rumours that the gaffer is on his way in a couple of rags I wouldn't wipe your a** with could work wonders. But we won't fall for that. Like you say I see Roberto here for the long term.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oli Jennings: I completely agree that the so-called "bigger" clubs have their propagandists in the media looking to transfer our players and staff. Those clubs can't bear the idea of Everton - or any other club - taking their place in the money-spinning Champions League. They must keep us outside the top four or suffer loss of finance, loss of prestige, and loss of their own quality players.
Like most pundits, if the lazy journos publish all of the claptrap then when one of the "stories" actually comes true they trumpet their predictions - it's funny how the deluge of false predictions and other garbage is swept under the carpet. Of course, the problem is that we supporters crave every bit of info and snippet of gossip and we love the craic - so the media will stay employed and newspapers will still sell and Sky and BT subscriptions will still be taken.
