Just a thought I was having, last season when the news broke that Moyes was leaving I was gutted but relieved at the same time, I know strange that seems. But anyway what I'm trying to say is when Martinez took over I did not expect anything special in his first year. I posted this saying that last year and that it would be his second season that we would start to see what he would bring to us. Now I'm not having ago at him in anyway please believe me but expectations are very high now from Evertonian's and I'm a bit worried if we stall next season a lot of fans will turn against him and it happens it does. Martinez before he came to us was not taught of as high as he is now he was always just that little Spanish manager that kept Wigan in the premier league against the odds. But now his reputation has sky rocketed with Everton I have seen his name popping up been linked with clubs everywhere and there no Micky mouse clubs either. Some Utd fans said they wish they got him instead of Moyes, some Arsenal fans have said they hope Arsen wenger leaves in the summer and their board do everything in their power to take him from Everton, Spurs fans were hoping Daniel levy was trying to get him aswell it just goes to show how much people pundits everywhere think of him now he is is been branded as one of the best young managers in the buisness today. But all I'm saying is has he done too much too quick with us and that he is going to feel pressure that he never felt before next season I really hope not because I don't think I could stand seeing fans turn against him, he has a plan but it will take time he is heavily looking at our youths and also planning our future through them and not just by buying what we need I really hope he is here for many years but also worried that too much is expected from him next year from our fans and believe me the media aswell that's all I'm saying and has anybody else been thinking something similar.

{Ed025's Note - you make some great points there stef, and i can really see where you are coming from mate, i just hope our fans are not as fickle as you think..

I think a drop of season is inevitable as I can just not see how we can better 72 points, but I would be happy with another top 7 finish and some nice football again and then give martinez time to get it right like we did with moyes who had very up and down season in his first three or four seasons at the club.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks ed and I hope so too, Mike I really hope he gets the time he needs but believe me mate I have been in the crowd before at Goodison and seen a lot of ourfans turn against Moyes and it was not nice things that they were saying mate. Does anybody remember last year at Goodison the amount of fans that left when we were 3 nil down at half time to Wigan in the fa cup to me I knew Moyes had to go sooner rather than later, there was still another half to play in that game and one early goal second half could of changed that game but the truth was mate that our fans seen how tactically out smarted Moyes was by Martinez in that game and he lost a lot of fans because of it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Last season I put some posts on this banter site suggesting that all was not a bed of roses. I suggested that we had made 2 brilliant loan signings in Lukaku and Barry, but both would be near impossible to replace with our financial situation. I was also concerned that RM was signing a group of other players who scored very few goals. I predicted that we would need to bring in 6 or 7 new faces. This would also be a problem. We needed to sign some players capable of chipping in with goals. The rumours of Maloney only worries me further. Kone, McCarthy, Barry, McGeady and if we sign Maloney have precious few goals between them. Lukaku's goals will be missed big time. Barry is wanting silly money to sign. All in all I think RM has the biggest job of his life over the next 3 months and it will be VERY difficult to attain anywhere near his first season. I am an old codger who has seen a lot in football. One of the things younger supporters do not realise is how quickly things can change in football. I truly hope he signs some great players who are goalscorers. However, like I say, I can possibly foresee difficult times ahead. No doubt I will get the usual negative comments about this post, but I will still be supporting RM and EFC when or if these problems arise. I have stuck with EFC all these years through thick and thin. Like you say, will others turn against RM if it starts to go downhill a bit?

I have exactly the same sentiments Degsy, I wrote out a huge post saying exactly what you have on my phone and hit the red post button by accident and wiped it and didn't have the motivation to re-type it. The main thing all this is himged on is money. IF we have 50 million available and not 15-20 like I fear then I think we will be ok. If not and my fears are there is no money we are going to struggle. Martinez isn't stupid he knows players like Maloney are not what we need for a top 4 assault so IF it is true that we're in advanced talks with him that is setting massive alarm bells ringing with me that he's looking at players like him because he has no choice. That is little signs that make me worry. Look at Liverpool, they have no worries scoring goals but they want a different option to come from the bench if Suarez and Sturridge are not firing so they sign Lambert a player who will score lots of goals and has proven season in season out in the prem and will do ok and even at 32 is a good aquisition. We have no strikers at all, not a single out and out striker and if its true we are looking at Maloney, a second rate championship player who is injury prone then something is not quite right. Being honest about it Msrtinez signings so far. Robles, Kone, Alcaraz are all at best suspect the jury is still out on Mgeady and Mcarthey has been a revalation so forgetting the loans one out of 5 have come good the question remains is he buying those players because it is what he wants or is he buying them bdcause that's about the level we can afford. Either way the answer to that question worries me.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yep, this transfer window will be the test for me on the club's ability to continue making bargain basement signings and then selling on only under immense pressure and for inflated fees.

I'm curious to find out what people's prefernece would be with regards to transfers this Summer. Would you prefer that we spent the majority of our budget on maybe 3 marquee signings; i.e. Bony, Dembele and Batshuayi and then perhaps get another 3 loans with the remaining money, or spread our budget out on about 6 permanent signings of good quality? Personally my preference would be the first situation because it would send a statement out to our players that we're going places and they need to up their game to nail down their place, also 3 big signings such as that would give the team a huge boost.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Or perhaps use some of our budget to offer improved/extended contracts to our key players?

Agree0 Disagree0

We need 2 strikers. One big signing and maybe a loan or free transfer. A winger to replace del boy, a defensive midfielder an attacking midfielder and a right back.

Martinez has claimed he has identified his transfer targets let's hope there are no panic buys, doubt there will be any business before the World Cup though

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What do you consider 'panic buys'? Remember that we didn't secure the McCarthy signing and the Lukaku and Barry loans until the last knockings of last Summer's transfer window - and I wouldn't call them 'panic' transfer despite the lateness of them. The late signing of Fellaini by ManUtd at an exorbitant (ha-ha) fee is what I'd call a 'panic buy'.

Roberto, once again, gets his timing spot on with this information release. Personally, I had no doubts about the lack of signings/rumoured signings. But would love to add bony, huddlestone and or diame to the squad, and one other fwd. With the current crop of youngsters we have I think it would be a good squad.

Agree0 Disagree0

Tom huddlestone?. You having a giraffe

Agree0 Disagree0

If we signed Peter Crouch then we'd be having a giraffe - literally ;-)

Agree0 Disagree0

I happen to think huddlestone is a great player. technically very good and performs a similar role to Barry. Great passer of the ball and breaks up play. he's just in a poor side. Martinez would make a great player out of him. and he wouldn't cost a fortune. a good squad acquisition

Agree0 Disagree0

I should add. better passing and assists than McCarthy had for everton last season.a simple search on internet will show you. as I said in a much less capable team. he did a lot for hull last season

Agree0 Disagree0

Bobmartins he"s a dog

Keep taking the tablets Bob.

huddlestone is a good passer and has a good shot with either foot but he is incredibly slow, lazy and tries too many spectacular volleys that never come off, he can't defend and isn't good enough bob, give me mccarthy anyday

Barking mad with you lot. remember the gibbo and the McCarthy doubters. I guess I've won no chums on here. but it's does matter I never winalot. I won't be led astray I'll keep my opinions coming.

Agree0 Disagree0

Swan, McCarthy for me to. I just thought with the right manager he'd be good cover for gibbo and Ozzie should we not keep Barry. Personally I'd rather mo diame was our top choice to takeover from Barry.cheers anyway

Agree0 Disagree0

I like Huddleston too Bob, they're all barking mad mate leading you up the garden path and a bit woof with their treatment of you pal ;). I would seriously take Huddleston though he score goals and breaks up play really well so that is a yes from me.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers paddock. When you consider we need to increase squad size I think he would be a decent and thrifty addition. Additionally someone mentioned on here that he was slow and couldn't turn. we'll same applies to Barry, but look at how good he has been for us (granted Barry is a better player) but I saw it as an option.

The press are saying that Bony has a release clause of 19 million. If that's the case we have got to have a look at signing him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Have we ever said we were interested in him or is it just people wishing on here?

Agree0 Disagree0

Mirror saying Arse, west ham and newcastle quoted £19m for Bony, seems an odd number?
But If you think we paid £15m for Fellaini untested think its worth a go for a proven striker!

Maybe slightly out of rumouring but doesn't everyone get carried away with the world cup? It never lives up to the hype with a round robin suffocating open football. Opt out of Fifa, (Qatar)persuade top sides around the world to join us. Straight knock out, go for broke, cut down on friendlies, keep players fresh for the clubs who pay their wages and make even bigger profits.
My only concern would be England not getting invited!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Last couple have been overhyped and dissappointing but there have been some great world cups in the past that give us great memories!

Agree0 Disagree0

Am I the only one who agrees with FIFA giving the World cup to nations like Qatar?

Agree0 Disagree0

I hope your being sarcastic PK. qatar is the least deserving nation to host a world cup, if it stays there.

Agree0 Disagree0

PKBlue - I have been fortunate to travel and live on almost all the continents, every nation I have been to has a passionate following of the game. The Middle East is no different BUT they should hand said it would be a winter eorld cup from the start and serious issues over other countries fans cultures needed to be addressed before agreeing. Issues like homophobia, drinking, women's rights needed to be looked at. For me the perfect chance to expand the reach of the game was Australia where in the last 2 years football has become the most played sport there. They dominate there qualifying stage and it's their winter in the summer and having lived there Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydbey would be playable at that time of year, plus they have all the required stadia anyway.
I think all true football fans want the game as universal as possible and non discriminate however it needs to be sensible. I even think Brazil in the summer is too much not just for European teams but fans as well.
Also why not have a World Cup every two years an A and a B. Finalists of the B get automatic qualification to the A, it will allow the Wales (Bale) Swedens (Zlatan) some quality African nations and others a better chance to develop. USA for example if they won the B could bring through youth in friendlies during qualifiers with no stress.
The game needs to be run by people who know how to run global corporations not ex footballers. There is so much wrong. Ultimately the Qatar World Cup is a joke, not because of the bribes but because of the fact that FIFA didn't have the balls to say in 2020 the World Cup will be in the winter you have 7 years to deal with that respective leagues throughout the world

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jun 2014 20:35:43
Conspiracy theory: FIFA - having already realised that a Summer World Cup tournament in Qatar is a non-starter because of the climate and seen how many of the European nations don't want a Winter World Cup because of the disruption to their seasons - are now desperately looking for a reason to move the tournament elsewhere and also ensure they appear to be acting in an ethical manner rather than just incompetent, allegedly corrupt, bunglers and time-serving jobsworths. Is that too harsh?

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jun 2014 09:18:12
. I think the only chance we have of getting Lukaku is on loan for another season if he stays at Chelski! I see there are reports that we are in talks with 'Maloney'. I sincerely hope not, just nowhere near good enough for our team - please Roberto, no more ex Wigan tosh! Just go get Bony, & that'll do me just fine! :-D

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Maloney is 31 and not good enough. I will be furious if this happens I'm hoping it's just lazy journalism because he is not the sort of player we need to be looking at

£140k a week wages is not free in my opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't see why not swan. He's only coming up 36yr old, won plenty of trophies, is Englands shining hope for the world cup, is faster than Sterling and most importantly. he's free.
he could be a future Efc midfielder for years to come. But seriously. why Lampard. i'd expect promoted teams to go for those types of player, who have epl experience. I know we had Barry, but I wouldn't fill the team with players whos legs have gone.

Did anyone notice that Wilshire refused an obvious pass to Barkley that would have put Barkley in great position?

Reckon Wiltshire sees Barkley as a threat to his position as '1st attacking midfielder sub' - so refused him the chance of an eye catching opportunity

wouldnt suprise me, wilsheres a t*t

Agree0 Disagree0

Hodgson will see in training that Barkley is far better at football than Jack. All he does is get the ball and run into a midfielder or defender. At least Ross beats his men.

thank you dentie! I've been saying this for ages, gets the ball, runs 5 yards, passes it sideways and everyone raves, overrated to the extreme

Agree0 Disagree0

But swan, he will never play a better 5 yard sideways pass like king clev
