Solid play. Great find RM.

Yes mate he looks really good. Besic last season was motm in the Derby at Goodison for me (think Ibe or Gerrard got it, no idea why) and yesterday was Funes Mori. Really good winner of the ball and no nonsense but the lad can play too. Really showing Tim Vickery up who said he didn't have the pace to play in the Premier League (you know, because it ruined Jamie Carragher, John Terry and Nemanja Vidic's career's didn't it) he seemed pretty quick chasing Sturridge's charging Brontosaurus touch. That tackle on Ings was brilliant, the match didn't get to him at all. Made up for him.

Mori was good. He was good against West Brom but even better yesterday. Very solid. Your analysis of the game in another post was pretty much spot on Swan. The only change I'd do is swap Mori and Jagielka's rating. Although Mori was very good. Jags made some vital clearances and he was my man of the match.

I'd give pretty much the same ratings and comments you said about the rest. Well done Swan.

Just one other point. The joint team was picked before the game yesterday. Howard was pretty much a shoe in for the goal position. Based on the game you'd have to pick Mignolet. He gained a draw for the Reds imo. His save from Naismith (although I hate to admit it) was brilliant.

When Schmeichel played he commanded the goals area. As well as big Nev. Howard should just keep his eye on the ball and mow people out of the way if he has to.

P.S. Poor Rodgers, wonder will he ever get a job at a 'big' club again.

Don't think anyone will touch him with a barge pole with close to 300 million spent in three seasons. I mean it's all very well saying he's a nice bloke etc etc but with those sort of figures he should be a nice bloke winning the Premier league. Anyway that's enough about him spoiling our fantastic Rumour site.

05 Oct 2015 11:16:12
Agree Swan I really can't understand Vickery's comments. Makes me wonder how often he actually watched him! With him Stones Galloway Browning and Garbutt our defense looks good for the next 10yrs!!

afim78: add Holgate to your list (plus some other youngsters that my yet prove themselves to be first team players) - and not forgetting that we've still got Coleman - and I'd agree that we do look reasonably covered for defenders as and when the likes of Jagielka, Baines, Hibbert, etc., eventually retire or move on.
We also seem OK for defensive/holding midfielders, but I'd contend that we lack sufficient quality in depth in the forward, wing, and attacking midfield areas. Henen and Rodriguez (and hopefully some promising youngsters) may prove good enough, but I do reckon that we'll need to bring some top-drawer talent from outside into the squad if we are to compete for trophies and for the European places.

Someone who we are missing, well not missing because we are doing well. Someone who I actually miss, never thought I would say this, Tom Cleverley, I think, someone who can play anywhere in Midfield. Adds the work rate and quite reliable. Not saying we will all of a sudden become brilliant as that is rubbish. What I mean is, it gives us another option, different type of player. No I've not suddenly become a fan but well done to him.

Stef,

By all accounts FSG had already decided to sack him before the match.

They didn't tell him because they didn't want to upset preparations before Merseyside Derby.

Not keen on Rodgers, but that sucks.

Yes I understand that Dags but would you not feel a bit foolish baying for the mans blood and then you get what you want and then that's bad it's not right come on mate I was gobsmacked could not believe what I was hearing. On another note well done today mate I thought Arsenal were excellent really wiped the floor with UTD brilliant stuff.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 23:07:16
Totally agree Stef,

His sacking was always on the cards.

Personally, I'm gutted because I think they will get Jurgen Klopp, who I had hoped would be Arsene's natural successor.

Today mate, we were excellent, albeit for 20 minutes, but that was enough to ride out the last 70 mins keeping Utd at bay.

Happy Gooner today.

Note for Everton coaching staff.
When defending corners tell Ross to stand goal side of the player he is supposed to be marking and not in front of him.
Two goals in 6 days down to the very basics of defending taught in Primary school.
2 points dropped today and if we are to progress we must eradicate these constant errors.
A goalkeeper who came off his line would help.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - i agree that ross was poor on that corner mushy, but the keeper has got to be stonger there mate, anyone in that 6 yard box would get flattened by big nev when he played..whether it was the opposition or us!..

04 Oct 2015 21:09:16
Howards mistakes cost us too many points every season. We need a better keeper, he is not good enough. Its that simple. He does make good saves some games but 99% of keepers in any league make good saves at times.

Agree0 Disagree1

04 Oct 2015 21:15:26
Totally right Ed. I have read posts on here for some years now whereby Howard has been slated and I have supported him. In one on one situations I would say he is as good as anyone else. but it now appears teams are lumping balls onto the 6 yard line for their forwards to attack knowing that Howard will be rooted. I suspect both he and Barry will need replacing. Ok Barry was great today but his age really means he is on his last legs. let's hope we get a good keeper in and a central midfielder soon.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 21:48:01
Totally agree with 90% of what you said there Degsypulford. I said before todays game in posts relating to Lukaku last week the 2 positions most needed strengthening is Keeper and striker. Robles may be the answer. Not convinced either way Howard is getting on and is definitely past his best. All in all he served the club well but it has to be his last season as first choice.

Barry totally agree it should be his last season too. Great to have him for 3 seasons. Good addition, but not getting any younger. Where I don't agree with you is we need to sign a DM? Really?

Without Barry we have McCarthy, Besic, Gibson. Hopefully Gibson will put injuries behind him now. Barkley can play there also along with Osman and Ledson may even be an option. Baines played a few there also and Martinez mentioned how would make a good midfielder. With all the options we have at left back now that could very well happen.

I think we're well enough covered there at the moment. Keeper and striker for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 00:49:42
Butler from stoke? We almost had him two years ago, don't know for certain, who mess that one up at the time.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 08:58:58
I even forgot Clevs in above comment so think we're pretty well full in that position. Prob our most filled position along with left back. Rather see money spent elsewhere like keeper and striker.

Never got why people slagged Clev. He's slowly changing peoples opinion. Always tries his best like Naismith.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 09:11:20
All keepers make mistakes no matter who, weigh up Howards mistakes against some of the great saves he makes, all in all he is not that bad.
who else would anyone bring in that is that much better or more consistent?

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 09:46:57
I said that in an earlier comment wakka. Howard has been a great servant to Everton. Sadly time moves on and in my opinion he's past his best. Think its time to look for his replacement. No doubt he will make vital saves later on in the season.

Goaldie is too important position. Look how Chelsea are doing with their second choice goalie. Bet they would be damn glad of Cech now.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Oct 2015 12:42:47
Have to agree, that Howard was at fault for their goal, but we've known for a long time that he can't control his box, and coming for corners/crosses is something he hasn't a clue about. We need to replace him in January otherwise any chance we have of winning something or qualifying will be gone. Wouldn't mind Schmeichel as his replacement.

Here's a question: when Baines is fit to play, would any of you bring him back in as the automatic first-choice left-back or does Galloway deserve to stay in the team for longer? The same question might possibly be posed about Coleman and Browning. Both youngsters have done the team - and themselves - proud in my humble opinion.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

04 Oct 2015 18:46:11
Put Coleman straight back in but not Baines.

Agree1 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 19:02:14
And what do we do at the end of the season when we have four players - Baines, Oviedo, Garbutt and Galloway - vying for the left back position. Would we keep all four - maybe with Oviedo covering left-midfield (replacing the aging and injury-prone Pienaar in the squad) and Galloway also covering at left-sided centre-back?

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 19:26:19
Oviedo is going in the summer mate his contract is up. No idea how to keep them all happy, perhaps Baines or Garbutt may cover the left midfield position. Or Baines goes in to midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 19:37:51
I firmly believe in Stones and Galloway we have 2 of Englands future back 4. Galloway has been so impressive I really hope Roy is watching. Perhaps a £100 m offer for both Jose? thanks but no thanks. The problem is we all love Baines and especially love him through the loyalty he has shown. Tough call for Bobby.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 20:06:59
I think both Seamus and Baines will probably both walk back in the team when they are fit enough to play. I'm not saying it is the right thing to do, both Browning and Galloway haven't put a foot wrong and deserve to keep their spot in the team until they hit a dip in form.
As Swan says, think BO is on his way out come the summer. Real shame as he was hitting top form before his horrendous leg break, he just doesn't seem to be the same player he was before that fateful fa cup game.
With regards to the two young lads filling in at the moment, they should be proud of their performances so far. Galloway will go on to have a good career at cb with us, think that's his favoured position. Throw in the mix Holgate, Pennington and Browning (not forgetting Stones, for as long as we can keep him) then we have a decent back line for the future. Mori looks like a tidy player too, if he continues to improve then that 9m might not be as expensive as it seemed

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 21:06:46
Both Baines and Coleman should go straight back in when they are match fit. Galloway has done very well but he is nowhere near the player Baines is. He may well develope into a great left back but at the minute Baines provides more assists than 95% of defenders in world football. Coleman will walk straight back in as Browning is years behind him.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - they have both done exceptionally well joe, and to be honest i think galloway is a better defender than baines, and after all defending has to be the main priority for a full back..

04 Oct 2015 21:35:11
Galloway has been excellent Ed but Baines is a much better all round player at present. Galloway may edge the defending between the two but a full back needs much more than that these days.
Galloway looks like he'll develope into a great full back but there are not many that compare to Baines in world football right now. Browning has done ok last few games but Coleman is years ahead of him in most departments.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - its all about opinions joe..

04 Oct 2015 18:08:43
Think we should invest big in jan on a gk as the rest of the squad is the strongest we have had in a very long time

Believable2 Unbelievable1

04 Oct 2015 18:49:42
Injuries notwithstanding, I'd be amazed if we brought in a first-team goalkeeper in January or, come to that, next Summer.
In my humble opinion, it's in the forward positions that the squad will need strengthening, as I reckon we'll have to replace quite a few aging players and (being brutally frank) some other players who are OK-ish but don't consistently deliver real game-changing performances. We seem well served by young players in defensive positions and we've one or two promising youngsters in midfield. I hope that Henen and Rodriguez can perform in the first team, but I still reckon that we need to bring in some talent for the forward areas.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 16:13:11
Firstly why does this plonker Atkinson always seem to get this game? I actually don't think Lucas' first challenge was a yellow but if you have given it, how on earth do you not send him off for the second challenge. Cynically fouling someone from behind is basically an automatic yellow and Atkinson bottled it. Brenda knew it and hauled off Lucas straight away. in terms of the game, how many corners do we have to watch before Howard learns to come out and own his 6 yard box? Such a soft silly goal and I really would give Robles a chance. We weren't brilliant today but looked like there was only going to be one winner once the second half started. thought Lukaku's hold up play today was the best i've ever seen from him and thought he was exceptional today. Personally I would have got Kone on earlier. Overall we have lost only one game and get either 2 or 3 points from the next big 2 games we are well set. We just need that special one player I think to make that extra difference. Happy blue.

blue bas, been happening for years now mate, has no control of his area and very rarely comes out for the ball. He doesn't even punch them away, just stays on his line so whenever a player gets a flick on it is basically a goal.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - he came for one at milners feet right by his post and kicked it out for a corner swan, it would have been easier to grab it than kick it, maybe its a confidence thing..but it looks awful mate..

Howard-6-How much longer with this clown in goal.

Browning-7-Solid, very fast, did well today considering.

Jagielka-8-Some dodgy passes but typically solid.

Funes Mori-9-You see, all week I heard "watch Sturridge terrorize John Stones". Well, where was the 'only Aguero is better' Sturridge today? Has a touch Lukaku would laugh at and he went missing quite early on. Oh yeah, he was in Funes Mori's pocket. He was top class today, 3 amazing challenges to stop them going through. Dominated Sturridge in every way, air, strength and on the floor. Brilliant.

Galloway-8.5-How in gods name did Joe Gomez make most peoples Merseyside 11? He's not fit to lace Galloway's boots. Love this kid.

McCarthy-7.5-Typical Jimmy Mac.

Barry-8.5-Ran the game, he is still a quality player.

Deulofeu-6-Didn't get it to him enough and he kept losing it, one cross and the mayhem ensued.

Barkley-7.5-Like Barry he ran the game, unlucky shot but his decision making could have been better.

Naismith-6.5-No comment.

Lukaku-8.5-One of his best games, hold up play was brilliant and he was boss in the air. He turned up today.

Lennon-6-
Kone-6-

I'm sick TO DEATH of being done by referees!! Lucas did about 349 fouls and only got a yellow 134 fouls in. Where was the sending off. Mamadou Sakho or as I call him, the human Octopus. Friggin Bambi on ice squaring up to people. Giving it all this to the Evertonians, got bullied by Rom all game. Emre Can swinging at people yet OUR players are the one's being booked. We had the chance to take a quick free kick, he pulls it back. They are 3 on 3, Coutinho takes a quick free kick (WHILE THE BALL IS MOVING) and it is allowed. Consistency? What's that!?. Worst refereeing performance since Kevin Friend vs Newcastle at home in 2012-13. Our player does one tackle, booked, their player does 7 or 8 before he even gets warned. Whatever, Atkinson is garbage. On to the next one.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

04 Oct 2015 17:29:07
Fair assessment. Naismith gave 100 percent as ever but I would have gone for kone to start. I was worried about funds but what a performance! That's a Mori! Very poor refereeing again.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 19:45:03
Suppose you're going to blame Howard for that goal Swan even though Barkley for the 2nd time in two games loses his man because he is too busy ball-watching. Also why 'no comment' for Naisy he offered more than Deulofeu . In fact so did Lennon in the time he was on the pitch!!

Agree0 Disagree1

04 Oct 2015 19:52:11
Add to that Coutinho's free kick was taken miles away from where the foul was committed.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 20:08:07
Aflm-Carragher and near enough every review of the game I have read has blamed Howard for it. Such an easy cross to catch but he doesn't does he, one of the easiest goals Ings will score, there was a big 'waaaaaay' second half when I think he finally caught a ball from the air. Bout the 70-75 minute I think. It was poor from Ross but Howard deserves his share (most) of the blame.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 21:23:51
If a goalkeeper can not move 4feet from his line on a corner he shouldn't be playing amateur football never mind professional. The goal was Howards fault for not commanding the 6 yard box. Barkley should have been tighter but still Howards fault for not cleaning out Ings, Barkley and any player in the way.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 23:08:45
Swan I agree Howard could have done better. I just think it's unfair to give him all the criticism. Barkley is a big lad and needs to be stronger when defending corners. It has happened a few times now!

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Oct 2015 15:48:13
Martin Atkinson and his incompetent officials are an embarrassment to the profession that is refereeing. Anymore biased and they would have been wearing red shirts. Is a high boot not dangerous play and therefore a yellow card? And then Lucas deliberate foul whuch stops Ross going through? Disgrace! Still we should be beating poor sides like them they are awful.
