Can't remember last season, one advantage of getting older.

Koeman, Rhino, Alardyce. We finished 8th. Playing much better football this Season and will be a good achievement to finish top 7. Still not beaten any of the big boys, although we certainly have a stronger Team and Squad. Transition (seems every season since Mr Moshri's arrival - but seems finally to have got it right) means, in my opinion and even with this Squad, that we will probably start to see how good we are towards the end of next season. Anything before that I will take as a bonus.

Question for ed2. This European super league which has been leaked by German newspapers. The government is denying knowledge of talks but we have had discussion about this proposal on the past. Is it likely to go ahead or will governments veto the project, if they can?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have explained all about it at length over the years. From a legal standpoint Governments cannot ban sporting clubs from joining in competitions, but the clubs have to except they could be excluded from their own leagues if they were to join. The clubs involved in the discussions accept that they would be banned from all existing club competition and the players would initially be banned from all FIFA competitions as well, but know that FIFA would be looking to negotiate in any case. It would be the end of UEFA in all probability and UEFA are very aware of this. It would also result in a restructuring of many of the national leagues.}

06 Nov 2018 08:30:18
I would guess there is a lot to lose and a lot to gain from the "top" clubs and UEFA. UEFA and FIFA stick together pretty much and would resist for obvious reasons. Without there being a promotion/ relegation structure, all other clubs would probably also resist it. I guess it comes down to how much extra could the "top clubs" make financially whilst at the same time how much would they lose domestically? In certain domestic leagues clubs play home and away twice. I could see the "top clubs" in this country pushing for this with a reduced sized Premier League. Say down to 10 clubs who play each other 4 times a season. That then leaves the cup competitions for the other clubs to be involved in. It would certainly boost the revenue of the "top clubs" with TV deals and attendance figures. The one thing for certain is the fans will be the last to hear about it! Ed002 has repeated his view on it time and time again. It is an idea that may well happen some time, but for now things are as they are. I personally can't see it in my lifetime. A bit like Brexit! . what? We are leaving? Really?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I would not see the Premier League reducing to 10 clubs at all. Realistically 16 or even 18 is here they want to be. A bigger issue is "will the Premier League exist at all".}

06 Nov 2018 10:51:29
Well it won't exist if the Euro League happens that's for sure Ed002. What I was tryng to say was that before we reach the Euro league, the bigger clubs can see that there is bigger revenue when they are playing each other. This is restricted somewhat by the structure of the Premier League and even the payments to clubs who are relagated to the Championship. If I was running a "top" club and new that my club was generating X% of the Premier Leagues income and that was being shared out with unsuccessful clubs who were in a different bracket of income. eg compare Huddersfield with Manchester United. then I would want a bigger share of the pie. Yes maybe 10 is a bigger reduction than what they may want, I accept that. but my point was that initially they will be wanting a restructure of the Premier League with smaller numbers. Maybe 18 initially then to 16? Who knows. But when they have achieved that and can play each other 4 times a season, they can get so much more TV income and also attract more fans because they have fewer clubs to compete with on TV. Past big clubs such as Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, Leeds Utd etc demonstrate what happens without the income. There are an established set of top teams now. It used to be that it was fluid and one season Derby would win the League, the next Everton, the next Leeds etc. These days only Leicester have managed to pull it off and that really was a one off wonder. I can't see anyone outside the top 6 winning the league for a few years to come except perhaps us with the financial backing we have. The top 6 these days is usually the same teams season after season. In those days each season was different. I digress. my point being is that I think the Euro League is a way off and I expect steps of changes before it happens. Like you say Ed. a negotiation between all parties. and this is likely to be a long and ongoing negotiation over a few years with give and take and a progression of a league with fewer teams. Whether that is a Euro League? They may never get that far. Who knows what the future holds? Like I said. Brexit shows what happens in negotiating complex issues!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Discussions have been going on for 10 years and I have provided regular updates on the European pages over the years. Nothing has changed recently.}

No matter how big this league is, it will contain clubs who are used to winning week in week out. Someone in it will be at the bottom and with no relegation will most probably stay there. Fans of these clubs very quickly lose patience after just a couple of poor results let alone a whole season. You only have to look at Old Trafford to see how toxic they have become since the never-ending success Ferguson brought them. Chelsea change bosses most seasons already even when they have a successful one. They really ought to be careful what they wish for as if it isn't a massive success and TV money disappears they will be left in limbo with now national league to fall back on.

Looking at the form of Gomes, he looks very good quality, some might say it's early Days and also the risk of his injury returning. But some times in life you have to take a chance.

Personally I think we need to strike up a deal in January to try and tie the player down to a permenant move.

No question we need a top class striker, but if Gomes is the only deal we get incoming over the line, That would do for me until the Summer.

Not sure how it works with a loanee, if you can sign them mid season of their loan spell, any Ed's know?

If so then Zouma could also be a possibility.

Risks worth taking. I remember a midfielder who had a penchant for breaking his legs, considered much too risky by many to even thinking of signing. Peter Reid was his name. Whatever happened to him?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Loanees can be signed on a permanent basis at anytime during the loan. Today or tomorrow even.}

06 Nov 2018 17:59:28
Cheers Ed, I was unsure on the loan side of things, glad thatā€™s cleared up for me, letā€™s hope Barcelona are willing to strike a deal.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I suspect he won't be cheap and he would have to think about other options, but Everton can certainly raise the matter with Barcelona.}

05 Nov 2018 13:15:07
any of the Ed's know if Zouma is able to play vs Chelsea?
If not probs a good time for Mina to make first start. I like the look of Mina and Zouma rather than Keane and Mina/ Zouma.

Quality goals on Sat - quality support in stands too

3 huge games coming up. Feel like we need to beat one of Chelsea or Liverpool to keep in touch - with top 6.

Suprised by Chelsea's start - I do think spurs and arsenal will drop points in next few games - if we can close gap a tiny bit before Christmas and add to squad (centre half instead of Keane) I reckon we could be pushing for 5th.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - no he can't, Prem rules block loanees from playing against their parent clubs.}

05 Nov 2018 13:27:45
Cheers Ed!

{Ed001's Note - very welcome mate. Should be a chance for you all to see Mina. Though I personally think Jagielka would be a better choice.}

05 Nov 2018 13:42:56
Not sure if you really mean that Ed, Jags has been a great servant for Everton but much too slow to play against Chelsea IMHO. Ed. any thoughts on Mina's quality?
Mike.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I meant it, he may be on the way out, but Jags can defend, whereas I have my doubts about Mina. I really do not rate him at all from what I have seen. When your positional sense is so bad that the utterly inept Davinson Sanchez is having to cover for you, then that has to be a worry. He is big, quick and very very good in the air, but he is going to need a hell of a lot of coaching if he is to be in a place to use those qualities to good effect. If he was playing alongside Jagielka, who could then talk him through the game, it would be a lot better. He needs guidance badly. I am not sure if Keane is the man to give him that.

Mind, having said that, for the way Silva wants to play, his ability to attack the ball might make up for his positional sense. He should notch a few and clear away a lot from set pieces, which is something Silva's teams have struggled with in the past.}

Thanks Ed. An interesting read, we should find out against Chelsea.

May be better Zouma and Mina then. I am aware as ed001 points out of Minas weaknesses and believe some sides took a more pragmatic view than others that perhaps gave more weight into his scoring against England.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Nov 2018 18:50:06
Just to add my thoughts on this going forwards I think it has to be mina and Keane personally I think zouma is better than Keane but if there is no chance of signing him then it would be better for next season to play Keane and mina together to build an understanding than mina zouma and start again next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Everton have paid a very, very significant fee to have Kurt Zouma on loan and he is the best of the CBs Everton have on the books and they will play him.}

05 Nov 2018 20:10:44
I agree he's the best of the bunch ed is there any chance of it being possible to sign him permanently or would that be no chance.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It would be possible if the player wanted it, if Everton wanted it and at the right price James.}

05 Nov 2018 23:55:06
How does it stand with season long loans Ed, letā€™s say Everton wanted to strike up a deal in the January window, may be wrong but would Everton be able to buy Zouma if all parties agreed, or do we have to see the season long loan out first.

Logic says we could buy in January, but I do not know the ins and out of season long loan players.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - No problem doing that, a loan can be converted to a permanent transfer at any time at all.}

06 Nov 2018 17:59:58
Cheers again Ed.
