I can't help but read into the comments attributed to RM, that his expectations against Arsenal are not set too high, so dear EFC friends, be prepared. For myself I have the preposition that we'll do alright. Ross will play an outstanding game and in a tight game, this for once will go for us in London . on the basis of 3rd time lucky and we are due one anyway. COYB! Love YA

Does anybody else think that we should seriously consider putting in a bid for Micah Richards at the end of the season? He's clearly unhappy at City & I'm sure would jump at the chance to play for a team that plays football like we do, (now!)
He's young & can play at both centre back & right back - two areas we need strengthening. I saw a figure of £8m in one of the papers, that's got to be well worth a punt?

{Ed025's Note - he will want first team footie tezza, and although he is a fine player, hes not ousting seamus for me mate..

07 Mar 2014 18:59:56
Hes 25, not that young, we do not need strengthening at right back, we need a young 17-21 year old to drift in to replace hibbert, I like richards but he is injury prone and I would take seamus over him every day of the week, not to mention that he will be on quite a bit at city

Agree0 Disagree0

He can play cb take lescot on free over him anyday

Hey lads just curious am I the only one that would prefer batashaiy (however you spell it) and finnbogason for 12-15 mil rather than lukaku for 20 mil in my opinion the two would be a better deal and I believe together would out do whatever lukaku could.

What's everyonne else's opinion?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I saw Finnbogason played once. His moving is excellent also hunting instinct better than Lukaku.

Agree0 Disagree0

Batshuayi is like Lukaku but his scoring this season is better.always a gamgle bringing a player from different league, but if you don't take a gamble you will never know. Finnbogasson seems a good striker but its the same situation as Batshuayi

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Lukaku is mising a couple of ingrediants to become world class. he is young and already is a proven goal scorer. I believe that 20m would be worth it as it would be a goalscorer for now (nobody can deny his goal scoring abilities) and a long term prospect. I would prefer a structured deal though so we could have funds available for other good players to come in.

Who would you want as England manager instead of Roy Hodgson?
Aside from Sir Alf in 1966 - obviously - and a couple of "glorious" near-misses (Bobby Robson in 1990 and Terry Venables in 1996), we've had a list of England managers who've failed, or quit, or just self-destructed.
Or is it that we're just deluding ourselves as fans by believing that our players are actually good enough to compete against the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Germany, etc., etc., and no England manager could deliver success?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The reason we fail is because we are still playing simple football and our players don't learn the higher level intricate technical stuff and are hopeless at controlling the ball quickly and also because we as a nation pile unbelievable pressure on them to succeed before every tournament by expecting them to win it when we have no chance
So much pressure that when they make the long walk to the penalty shootout box they're crapping themselves

The manager should just be brave enough to say "it's very unlikely we're going to win this tournament - we're not as good as some other teams - but we're going to go there and just enjoy the tournament for as long as we're in it and play open attacking football that's good to watch and if and when we lose then so be it - only one team can win so the rest of us are going to get knocked out at some point so let's just go along for the ride" and take some pressure of the lads

You are partly right Latchfordlad. But the problem is much more deeply rooted than this. I am 100% confident that the problem relates to grassroots football. Particularly what we teach our kids between the ages of about 6 and 11. I have been involved in youth and kids football very successfully for some years. The amount of times I have seen parents and coaches of gifted footballing kids putting winning of games before development of skills scares me. We should ban competitive football matches (in league format) for ages below 10 or 11. We should concentrate on showing them how to develop skills. Particularly defensive skills. Our current teachings state that defenders under pressure should hoof the ball away. How many times do you see Spanish or French defenders hoofing it away? Compare John Terry or even Jags with David Luiz. You watch match of the day and listen to Hansen and co slagging Luiz off. Why do Barcelona want him? Because he is a footballing centre half. He may not have the positional or tackling sense of Terry or even Cahill, but on the ball he is 100 times more comfortable. Young kids are shouted at by both coaches and parents for trying to do skill stuff on the ball if they try something and it fails. By the time they are 10 or 11, it is too late for them to develop the skills needed. Look at Ajax of Amsterdam's academy system. Why do so many continental defenders come out of this? Because that is what they teach. I could get to the root of the problem with the FA immediately and sort out our England team. Unfortunately you would not see the benefits for another 10 years. And that is where I give bad news. We are still making the same mistakes teaching our kids how to win at junior level.but not giving them the skills that will be needed later in their careers. I am afraid England will suffer the next 10 years and further still until we start teaching kids skills rather than how to win at junior level.

Agree0 Disagree0

It does not matter. Read my post above. A good manager can get a bit more out of players, but if they are below the standard.they are below the standard.

Degsy spot on its all about the wining and not developing skill. however, life is competative and competative sport develops life skills, or so the say. Catch 22 but I would prefer to see youngsters develop skill than win every match as they would be more likely to progress at a later age.
Anyway to answer the original post I would like to see Phil Thompson as England manager as I think he has all the makings of a true great, if not Phil then Mike Bassett.

Age is the key factor. When a kid has the desire to learn how to control a ball in defense and then carry it out of defence rather than just kicking it away, parents and coaches tell the kid that this is the wrong thing to do. So the kid learns to kick it away if under any pressure. Once learned, something is very difficult to un-learn. The parents and the coaches become obsessed with winning, rather than teaching the kids the necessary skills to become a good ball playing footballer. You can see the difference between English defenders and the rest of the team. Look at Hibbert and Jags. I love them to bits but can you see them playing football out of the back like Luiz? Baines is an exception.he obviously had a good coach at age 6-11 and has had good coaching since. Coleman to a degree too. The main problem seems to be center halves. we have this idea that they should not be carrying the ball or making short passes in defense. and this is taught. As you can tell, I am passionate about this and believe I am 100% correct. England will not succeed until this changes.

I'm a defensive centre midfielder by trade on a saturday and sunday morning. I commonly enjoy being drafted in to play centre half and play as you mention to carry the ball forwards into my more natural position to play it out of defense, thus allowing the centre midfielders to progress further up the pitch. I feel this is not too dificult to teach, but the qualities given to a centre half in england seemingly are to head and hoof. Think alcaraz at the club should help instill a bit of confidence into the other centre backs to move the ball about at the back (particularly with martinez at the helm), but our defensive coach dennis lawrence doesn't fill me with confidence from his playing days at wrexham, swansea and crewe, neither do the under 21's set up of stubbs and unsworth (manager and assistant manager) as their pilosophy was hoof to row z if in doubt.

Does anyone have any credible info about why Alan Myers left his job at Everton so abruptly?
