Why Messi, Swan?

The way he's portrayed as some sort of angel and Ronaldo the devil. He dives just as much as Ronaldo but it never gets mentioned, if he wasn't pumped full of drugs as a kid he would never have made it as a professional athlete, if he was given a god given talent, why didn't god give him the body to go with it. Doesn't pay tax is an obvious one, and how his success has been built around a team being built for him as the main man. Put him in Stoke or Las Palmas' team he would struggle. Put Ronaldo in either and he would still get 30+ goals a season easily. Just annoys me how he's supposed to be the ultimate role model when, he hasn't worked for his success, he has it given to him by great teams (and drugs) . Ronaldo worked very hard and, I'm not certain, but has Messi ever done anything for charity? I always see Ronaldo giving money and blood and doing all sorts. I just don't get why he is the perfect role model when Ronaldo is probably more of a worthwhile role model than anyone. Just really despise him.

{Ed007's Note - I think you're my new favourite poster, Swan mate, I feel exactly the same about Messi and I've had many an argument across all the sites about him. He should never have been allowed to play professional football it's as simple as that, Messi's a cheat.}

Swan,
Always enjoy your post. you are now my hero.
I have had 'rows' on Gooners page, re Messi V Ronaldo.

Have always said CR7 did the business in Prem and is now a superstar in LA Liga. He comes in for training an hour before anybody else and leaves an hour later than everybody.

Saw footage of players in tunnel before a match at WC. Ronaldo would shake hands with the little mascots and talk to them. Messi would just blank them.

As you said, Messi had teams built around him. Don't get me wrong, terrific player, but I would pick Ronaldo every day of the week and twice on a Sunday.

Utter rubbish!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it is not rubbish, Messi is not the nice guy he is made out to be, even ignoring the tax evasion etc. He bullies players he does not like, such as Alexis Sanchez and verbally abuses them on the pitch and in training. He also gives grief to players that pass to them. Messi has a great image, but it is fake.}

Swan/Ed001/ed007, I'm on the same wavelength as you lads when it comes to to Messi/CR7 argument. Ronaldo is a better all round player imo, can't see Messi scoring 40 goals in our league. But I'm not sure about the drugs thing that two of you mentioned. They weren't in the same bracket as performance enhancing drugs, I have always been lead to believe, but more of treatment to help him grow. Or have I missed something?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - his treatment was only necessary to allow him to be a professional athlete, he could have lived a perfectly happy life without the growth hormones.}

08 Nov 2015 13:51:43
Cheers ed001, always thought it was to help with all aspects of his life not just for sport.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - no, though doctors do often recommend it so kids don't suffer bullying due to their height etc, it is not actually necessary.}

09 Nov 2015 22:56:41
I love the messi v Ronaldo debate, av also had the growth hormone discussion with Poeple and I come down on the side of if you look at the stats the % it increased physically isn't much, also to not assist someone in this day and age medically were possible seems a bit stupid, one thing I will say is Ronaldo gave me more to the charity this year than messi was trying to hide and put Ronaldo anywhere on the pitch bar goalkeeper he's the best in the world.

A 1-1 draw away to West Ham United is a good result imho given their other results this season. However, once again, two issues stick out like sore thumbs: (1) our corner kicks are complete and utter rubbish - what does RM have against putting in quality crosses from dead ball situations? ; (2) Barkley is just not delivering on a regular basis imho and his previous flashes of brilliance are now happening very rarely (if at all! ) - what does RM think that Barkey is ACTUALLY contributing to our performances at the present time?

{Ed025's Note - ross seems to be one of the first names on the sheet sid, he would be the first name on the bench for me mate..

07 Nov 2015 22:28:33
It may be time (for the right fee) to let Ross develop his talents eleswhere, here he may be trying to hard, it may be in the interests of both the club and the player.

No way, I agree about his playing. Wouldn't take £50m for him. If we stand by him imo he will develop into something special. Will take time. I'd have patience with him for a good few more seasons. He's still very young and learning the trade. Just having a bit of an off period.

Stick with him and all could benefit hugely.

I agree NBTB my biggest criticism of a lot of Evertonions is we cry for a quality young blue to build a team around then we get one and all most of us do is knock him or want him sold. it annoys the hell out of me.

I tell ya what how about support him, sing his name let him relax. Barkley's biggest vice is he is one of us and trying too hard some times. I for one will support him through thick and thin because he is one of our own.

How much time should we give him? He's played around 100 first-team games so far and, although there have been superb moments, he's yet to perform at a consistent level through a run of games. I want him to be great for us - and certainly don't want him to leave - but he surely needs to earn a regular place in the team by being a reliable and consistent performer. I don't agree with fans who boo him when he makes mistakes, but he needs to develop further and achieve his potential sooner rather than later. I've no doubt that RM's "bigging up" in public of Barkley is backed-up by a ton of coaching of him at Finch Farm - and I've every hope that Barkley will effectively apply his talent and become one of the Everton greats. At just 21 (22 next month) he has time to develop - I just hope we're not still talking about his potential when he's 25 or older. Final thought: does anyone (RM, the other coaches, England, even Barkley himself) truly know his best position - central midfield, wide midfield, number ten, even a second striker?

Hopefully we are now a consistent side and RM now actually listens to his coaching staff and assistants on the need to adapt tactics (all we have asked is for him to see that. Draw or win our away games (yeah big ask but as long as plus outweighs minus) and unbeatable at home and at last this talented Squad should be where it deserves.

More patience needed for Barkley imo. Cowpat you make a good point. We don't know his best position and to be fair Barkley has been thrown about a bit. Last season he got a very hard start with injury. This season he started very well but has weaned lately. He's also getting regular starting in just the one position rather than playing him wide like last season.

Of course he's going to have off form spells. Happens to the best of them. Look at Rooney. I know he's braking a lot of records lately but didn't he go something like 18 months without scoring an away goal for Utd. Something like that anyway.

Look at Ross's stats for this season so far. Pretty good. He does annoy me as much as anyone. He does need to get stuck in more. I would be in favour of dropping him for a game or 2.

But on about selling him, not a chance. Imo he should be given at least 3 more seasons to establish himself. I hate to say it, he reminds me of the red Stevie G. If he is looked after and given encouragement. Especially from the supporters and crowds at games he could turn out to be fantastic.

If I was Martinez I'd be trying everything in my power for that to happen. Selling him? I wouldn't even entertain the idea.

sick of lookin at barkley today absolutely useless does nothing for the team and lazy should be dropped.

Has been a little disappointing recently alright. Missed the game today so can't comment, but perhaps being dropped would give him a kick up the arse!

Would like to see Kone in behind Lukaku with Mirallas and Deulofeu wide then Naisy off the bench if needed.

Don't want to be too hard on Ross as he is still only 20 but might wake him up a bit!

Never really one to criticise but he was awful so bad I would drop him from team for sure not only did he give ball away every single time he got it for me he was the laziest player on the pitch makes no effort wot so ever to help defensively even delboy puts him to shame jogs around doing absolutely nothin so angry with his performance.
