It was a great performance yesterday and a big improvement on all the games so far this season.

Silva was as brave as you can get in a manager after making some huge changes not only in personnel but also in tactics.

It's funny that BCT mentions about how bad the zonal marking from corners were yesterday. Well we didn't play zonal, we played man for man and in some other moments we played a combination of the two.

It seemed to depend on the amount of players in the box that determined how many would play in the zone but what did happen is we also picked up the players. It worked very well except for their big chance.

This was because we had too many players in the six. The players in the zone and our players picking up their players. We didn't make the same mistake again.

Everyone has been calling for it and he changed it yesterday. Mina's goal is a good example of how bad MFM can be as it's easy to block off and get away from your man from a set piece. Zonal is good if you attack your area and the ball.

Anyway, it worked yesterday but I still don't think it's the way to go and zonal is better.

The other big tactical changes happened not because of the manager but because of the two in the centre of Midfield. Davies and Gomes should be our mid two every game. Almost every pass was forward and direct instead of back or sideways causing slow build ups.

Davies for me was absolutely outstanding. He set the tone early on but because we had a willing runner in the no 10 he was able to get the ball in between the lines quickly and put us in attack in one or two simple passes.

In Gomes we have a truly quality player. His vision in some of his first time passes was the difference between the sides in the first half and in the second he fought side by side with Davies in breaking down any threat.

Upfront dropping Sig was well rewarded with four players that switched constantly with each other and looked like creating chances every time they got the ball.

Iwobi, could and should have scored but his link up play between the Mid two and then purposely trying to get Bernard, Walcott and Ricky involved meant we had an attack that finally looked dangerous.

Sig is a very good player but he slows us down far too much and like his goal, looks to shoot himself rather than play in anyone else. However, he took his goal very well and it's in this area he excels in.

Two more players that need a big mention here.

Sidibe. How we have missed a player on the right of defence like him. Strong, quick, controlled with the ball and willing to attack at every opportunity. He must start now ahead of Seamus.

The other is Walcott. It's no surprise that he also improved dramatically with someone there constantly supporting him in attack BUT he gave it back in return. There was a moment in the first half early on when he got back and made a tackle, helping out Sidibe. Finally, it looked like we had a right hand side to match our left.

Now it's only one game and Theo has had many bad ones but if we have two players here that are synced with each other, it finally gives some much needed balance in the side.

It's still not perfect and you expect there will still be bad games but hopefully, they'v proven to EACH OTHER that they can play as a team.

For me though and the haters won't like this but SILVA was the star man yesterday for being brave. Making the changes we cried out for in tactics and personnel. Now, though, he needs to keep being it!

Top post BJU. It’s fair to say we have certainly missed Gomes. And that the pairing with Davies paid off. Silva has been criticised rightly for persisting with a losing formula so deserves our praise for a successful and brave set of changes.

But I’m not getting too excited. It’s one win against West Ham. A team we aren’t shy in beating. I need to see consistency and improvements on last season. No more blips, he’s had one and now need to move his squad on from it.

If he can do that then people might change their opinion on him, especially as it would mean a good return of points and a good league position to match it.

Not sure what was brave about it. If Schneiderlin had been fit do you think Davies would have played. Yes he dropped Siggy but that should have been done a few games ago. Hopefully Silva has done some soul sourcing since many of us who have no idea about managing a football team have been screaming out for these changes weeks ago. I do want Silva to succeed but too many points have been wasted because he doesn't make obvious changes soon enough. The players are the ones who deserve credit, they really stepped up to the plate, let's hope the improvements continue.

Great post BJU we have been harping on and on about changes etc etc on here, Marco has now done that and needs as much credit as the lads on the pitch, long may it continue credit where credits due.

One take away I had from motd was when Sidibe was hacked down in the area there was the desire to get him on the pitch from Richarlison to assist defending the corner that should never have been! That’s one thing that had been missing this season for me the fight and desire to see out the win.

I don’t disagree that the players should get credit for the performance as long as they get the criticism when we lose. So many criticise Silva for lots of reasons when we lose, so shouldn’t he be part of the praise when we win?

{Ed025's Note - absolutely ace..

You can't blame Silva for bad results then not give praise when he gets it right.

It wasnt perfect and it's only one game. However, give him credit for being bold.

Of course injuries and suspensions help make some decisions easy but dropping Sig and changing up the tactics was his choice.

Playing the long ball from the back and going more direct was a major shift in tactics and it worked. It wasnt quite the horrible Big Sam or Moyes tactics but there was more urgency to get it to the front four and mix it up.

Save the anger for when we get beat and savour the wins.

BJU I must have been at a different game mate, saw no evidence (at set pieces) of man to man. Saw Keane do a couple of interceptions in open play but set pieces he just looks hesitant to move out of his space (strange for an International player) , to be fair Mina who I have been critical of, seems the better CB of the two. Notice Roja had a fair game for Utd.

If you look at the corner after their chance (the pickford save) it shows it better. We only had the three in the six and we man marked all of the west ham players in the 18.

To be fair there wasnt a lot to mark. We dominated that much.
