Regards Tom at times he runs around with too many missed passes and the amount of fouls he gives just outside the penalty are far too many, while I agree he gives 110% I really like the lad and you can't take it away from him he gives his all, I just reckon we have better and a spell in under 23s would help him become a better player, but hey it's only my option.

Agree15 Disagree0

Fair enough guernsey - just out of interest sake with our midfield currently decimated with injuries who would you say is better than Tom, currently available and could/ should take his place?

10 Feb 2020 08:05:33
Gingerdan - a couple of people have suggested Holgate as defensive midfield which would mean relying on Keane and Mina in defense - not a bad option in my opinion.

The other option is to bring in one of the U23's such as Baningime, Gordon or Adenirons who a/ all deserve a chance and b/ if they don't it calls our whole strategy at U23 level into question

At the end of the day though it is CA's decision. He sees them all day in and day out and knows what he is trying to do, If he sees more in TD than I do then there is probably more to TD than I am seeing.

Cheers Bw - I don’t know much about the under 23s but have heard those names mentioned previously. Maybe one of them can hopefully make the step up to take some pressure/ criticism off Tom.

As for the Holgate suggestion - is that not going back to the square pegs round holes issue we’ve previously been in? Holgate has stepped in that defensive midfield role previously but he’s more a centre back - personally think we should be playing him in his strongest position and letting him and MINA develop in to a good pairing.

Keane still worries me and the fact our keeper is prone to the odd mistake or two and doesn't really command his box would make me less likely to rely on Keane.

10 Feb 2020 10:24:39
Holgate has done very well sitting as DM but as we only have 3 CBs surely it's unwise to play all 3 on the pitch week in week out in case 1 of them being injured?
It's a massive feather in Holgate cap but I agree. Mina and Holgate should be 1st choice and Keane comes on to close out games either as a replacement for one of Mina or Holgate or as a tactical change pushing Holgate up to DM because one of our midfielders takes a knock or the game requires the change. We've been fortunate to have had all 3 available but it's a risk not having 4 CBs with a 5th from the u23s sniffing around the match day squad.

Think it's one of the brilliant things about us this season, the way they've been used is perfect. We would be in serious trouble if 1 goes down for a few weeks or worse.

Another is Morgan he has been outstanding lately with great tackles and pinpoint passes, I just think mate even though Tom gives all every match he can be so hotheaded and just needs time in the under 23s and Carlo will then get the best out of him.

10 Feb 2020 11:53:55
I think Tom would benefit going on loan next season. He’s still very young and let him make his mistakes elsewhere. He’s got quality but still has a lot to learn also one of his best attributes is his personality and mentality for such a young guy I think everyone thinks he’s older than he is. The loan last year done Holgate a world of good and look at Kenny now too.

10 Feb 2020 13:52:13
Toffee Apple/ GingerDan - we've started all 3 (Keane, Mina, Holgate) before this season. We've also started games with Coleman and Sidibe both playing and might well see it again depending on Walcott's injury.

None might be considered ideal but this is caused by our weakness on the right side, not enough CH -compounded by allowing both Feeney and Gibson out on loan and the injuries we have suffered in midfield

CA will use the squad as he sees fit but I wouldn't be worried about Keane, Holgate and Mina starting with Holgate DM and seeing one substituted off later in the game, whether it's injury or tweaking the formation. If it's Holgate and Mina starting with Keane on the bench and coming on later with Holgate moving up to DM or trying out one of the U23 I'd be just as comfortable. It's up to CA. He might think Tom is the more flexible option and I'm not going to second guess what he is thinking.

In the match programme last Saturday on the questions and answers page, Anthony Gordon was asked who was his toughest opponent in training, his reply was Leighton Baines who Gordon said he still had so much energy.

I know a few have suggested in the past about trying Baines out there so that could be worth a shout.

GB Schneiderlin has been playing well. My criticism of his to often crab football, however remains. For instance what percentage of those pinpoint passes are sideways or indeed backwards. His defensive duties have indeed improved.

10 Feb 2020 19:19:20
Agree to some instances dfs but las Saturday his football was excellent, hopefully he will carry on from this game mate.

10 Feb 2020 19:20:42
DFS you only have to look at Sneids last 3-4 games to realise the difference he has made to the midfield.
His ability to break up play and hit pin point cross field balls has been a feature of his play, add to that he covered more ground than any other player against Crystal Palace.
Credit where it’s due because frankly it has been earned and deserved.

10 Feb 2020 19:57:07
Forgive us for being sceltical about Schneids performances but we've seen these glimpses of quality before. It was only a few weeks ago he was letting the opposition run around him and score.
He owes this club a lot more than a few decent performances.

10 Feb 2020 20:18:19
Exactly Smit. A couple of good games doesn't make up for a season of trash. He and the team need to be consistent. Definitely looking up though. I thought when we went 4141 with Holgate at DM we played really well, his passing and closing down and aggression is great.

11 Feb 2020 01:19:22
For every 1 good game Schids has there are 5 bad games and, with the bad games, comes a bad attitude in failing to tackle or track back and cover

Sorry but one good game doesn't make up for all the bad ones. We can do better in the summer. Until then let's hope he improves his good to bad game ratio.

11 Feb 2020 10:01:08
I think we will see a totally different Team come the summer, Carlo will be wanting to to bring in a few new faces, will be very interesting in the Transfer market.

13 Feb 2020 07:22:04
I don't think that will happen Guernsey. If you read what he's said today he wants to bring through the youth and make very subtle changes in personnel. I prefer that as we seem to spend 5 months every season bedding in 5 or 6 players and it messes up the start of the season.

As for Tom. I'm happy with him. 22 year old dealing with unrealistic expectations of his home fans wanting Zidane. Not many out there at his age doing it in the top flight of any league in his position.

Not to worry though he'll be sold next year like most of the kids that get battered by our own.

Luckily DCL started scoring because most on here were saying he should be dropped and flogged.

13 Feb 2020 21:33:19
Different scenario under Carlo mate.

14 Feb 2020 01:40:36
I have a lot of respect for you BJU but why is it an unrealistic expectation for TD to be able to pass the ball less often to the opposition, to stop being caught in possession or give away fouls in dangerous situations?
As for others of about the same age
Guendouzi 20
Brooks 22
Loftus Cheek 23
Mount 20
James 20
Tielemans 22
Maddison 23
Barnes 22
Foden 19
Longstaff 20 and 22
Cantwell 22
Alli 23
Rice 20
Neves 22

He's fallen behind most of these imo

I want him to succeed but where exactly is his best position as I honestly don't see him as a defensive midfielder and I'm not sure if he is really creative/ fast enough to play further upfront? He needs a year on loan as maybe that, like Kenny/ Holgate, will be the making of him.
I love the fact he is a scouser, I love his commitment when he is on the pitch. Maybe he is trying to do too much with his passing/ tackling and hopefully CA can get him better focussed like he has with DCL but, at the moment he is making too many mistakes for me but I'd be ecstatic to be proved wrong.
