Our problem is recruitment. We go to clubs with a far higher profile and sign players who have failed there. They were big money signings that failed at a big club. They then get shipped out to clubs like us. We view them as a " big name signing" but they view us as a step down. The big clubs give you one chance and if you don't make the grade they get rid and move on. that's why they're big clubs. We get lumbered with a big money and big wages signing who has a great first season then sulks or can't be bothered as they realise our club isn't where they wanted to be. We need to be picking the best players from clubs that are viewed as being smaller than us. Richarlison for example. We will then have players that want to step up and take their chance at a club like us. That is the structure of all big, successful clubs and eventually, in time, we will have a squad full of players who will battle for this clubs success and that will attract players of a higher calibre.

Pauly
Does that not contradict your post below re Coutinho?

Like I said previous its mid season and who else is available? Also my point is looking forward as a club as a whole. Signing coutinho, for me, would be about salvaging something from this season. I get what you're saying but my point about hanging direction as a club will not be done overnight if at all.

Been saying this for ages. it it what we always did under moyes and our 80s side. There was a few rejects in that side but football was a different animal.

Players like that Patterson, maybe grant from West brom, Brereton from Blackburn etc.

Why would we want any player that’s struggling at another team at any level? We want players on the up, that aspire to be better than they are already. Like Gray, or Godfrey. Mykolenko fits the bill for me.

How would this not apply to Coutinho?!

Gs please take it in the context it was meant. Coutinho, short term fix in the midst of this current mindset the club endures. Going forward use the philosophy I am talking about. Why digging about coutinho and not any other point I've made?
