I really don't think 3 at the back is the way to go apart from in certain games. We do not have the right type of centre backs or Central midfield players to play that formation.

Wouldn’t it be worth seeing how we perform in the league before making a statement like that?
From pre-season the 3 at the back with 2 wingbacks has given us the best results.
4 at the back was a disaster.

We don't have a natural no6 so 3 at the back is the natural formation.
Our full backs are inexperienced but can run all day so playing them as wing backs might minimise their defensive frailties.
Unless we sign 2 more midfielders I can't see Frank playing 4 at the back too much.

According to one of the papers today, Frank himself has said he's after two midfielders. Assuming IG comes back, then we have a spot for maybe Gilmour, Winks, or an other. Same report says that we no longer have any interest in bringing him back. Be interesting to see who they bring in.

Dan we played like that last season. We do not have a centre back who is confident enough on the ball to make that formation work.

Blue tit - last season we didn’t have Tarkowski.
He will be ideal in the centre of a back 3.

With our current midfield, 3 at the back = relegation, we can not play that style, and you can't say we looked good in pre season? We got smashed, over run, well except for a championship side and a Ukraine 2nd string.

Got smashed while playing a back 4 mate not 3,fullbacks (particularly Patterson) where so high they where practically on there own tour of Canada. Both are natural WBs perfectly suited to a back 3, and like Dan said Tarks is very capable of playing out, people just tend to focus more on his physicality and the style of play at Burnley, I've been pleasantly surprised by his vision and passing range.

We didn’t get smashed.
We lost 2-0 to arsenal in our first game, which was arsenals 3rd of pre season so they had match fitness advantage.
The loss to Minnesota was shocking but we played 4 at the back and lost that game and you think we should stick with 4 at back?

Tarkowski is good yes but he isn't enough to make that system work. We need a John Stones type of centre back. We are awkward as anything in possession when we play 3 at the back. The centre backs get on he ball too much and can't play out or carry it forward.
