Referees are only human and make mistakes.
However, when a player makes a mistake, he can be dropped, sent off, or sold.
If a manager makes mistakes he can eventually be sacked, but if a referee makes a majore mistake that changes the outcome of a game, he is immediately surrounded by a wall of protection, reminding us what a hard job it is, and how they should be respected.

Respect is earned not given, the days of low paid part-time refs are long gone, they are well paid full time professionals, who, if they mess up should be held to account, fines, public criisism, and suspensions.

Agree with you're post mate its like var is taking over the referee whose on the pitch he calĺs a decision his decision then var is telling him to recheck it what happened to a judgement call of his decision and when is a referee who gets called to the var monitor actually say to var no i don't think it was offside or its a red car or any onfield decision and i will stick to my judgement call.

As much as I agree with most of what you say, I'm not sure how you would go about fining someone for mistakes? I don't think criticising them in public will do any good bar hurt their ego for a few hours and they do get dropped from the fixture list if they make a glaring fudge of things in a previous game.
Even using ex players to operate var, it brings in a load more issues. Some players have moved around different teams over the course of their careers so there will be plenty of games that they can't be involved in. Get rid of var entirely, it's ruining the game.

They won't give up an extra layer of power now will they! I have my doubts of late that we will get a substansive cut of our points deduction or that DCL will get recinded. Nothing to do with fairness and everything to do with face.

How I think VAR should be used is.

1. Fouls should be played in full speed and not slowed down as this makes the challenge look a lot worse than it is.

2. Handball should only be given if it is a deliberate attempt (at close range) to impede the game or if the arm is up/ out far enough to make a block.

3. Offside should be given as advantage to the striker like it used to be and not given when a toe or nose is past the last defender.

ArchetypeBlue, never go for such a commonsense approach. Strikers will be selected on the size of their nose.
