Why doesn't Martinez adopt the'high press'?

Many of the the comments we see are focused on our inability to press high and I pretty much agree with them all. I think I have the reason for why we don't and what we must Change to make the process happen.

As well as Barry has been playing, and he has been regularly our best player, I would still drop him. With him in our side we will always play tippy tapped and not a high pressing game.

If we play Mcarthy, as a protector of the back four with Besic and Cleverly ahead of these, then we would have the speed to recover from a failed high press. Barry just hasn't got the pace to adapt to the inevitable fast break from the opposing team.

Our back four could then play slightly higher up the field and take responsibility for bringing the ball out from defence in a more advanced position rather than the suicidal areas they are currently attempting to start moves from.

What I do not understand is that most teams play one striker, so why do we need two defensive midfielders in front of the back four, so you are right a more conventional 442 or 4411 will allow us to press higher up the pitch!

The good news is stones is playing, the bad news is that he is playing badly - mostly his fault for the second goal.
Rubbish goalkeeping from Robles yet again. Would imagine he will go three at the back in the second half and take off Oviedo and Mcgeedy putting on Kone and Delefeo.
What a shambles. Is Lukaku playing? No, he had a good game 2 weeks ago and is probably due one at Spurs

McCarthy and Barry - good, but really the problem.

Bobby seems to be wedded to these two. IMO we will not progress until both are dispatched. Why? Barry has been an excellent player but is simply a liability because he is too slow. Good teams know how to pull him around and get in behind him. McCarthy has energy but no vision. He doesn't look for the ball enough and when he does there is such a predictability in his first touch and vision that the opposition can take there time to regroup.
Together they are a nightmare and the reason why Martinez will ultimately fail is that my guess is that hasn't the stomach to give under performing players complete honesty. Show Mcarthy where hi under performing and if he fails to respond, drop him. The pair of them think they are bomb proof - I for one would sell Mcarthy ASAP and reinvest in a decent no 10 and another CF.

I think you've made a valid point there Nick.
Barry far 2 slow like a headless chicken @ times being run ragged week in week out,Mcarthy similar to cleverley passes side to side no vision to see a pass higher up the pitch & put a team mate clean through on goal.
They ain't got that in their locker building pattern of play from defence through midfield is far 2 slow & 1 dimensional.
Thought Barkley could drive @ the heart of a defence bombing fwd @ pace but only seen it in flashes.
Oh wot we'd give for a Gerrard or lampard eh.
Maybe Martinez needs to address the midfield problem & if their not performing then drop em give one of the youngsters a go.
1 goal between Mcarthy & Barry so there lies the problem.

I actually think that Cleverley has more instinct to progress the game when he receives the ball rather than Mcarthy. He is certainly better than Mcarthy in my view and a great bit of business being on a free. Logically however, they are pretty similar in style so just offload Mcarthy for £18 mill plus and use the funds for some energetic and creative no 10 or 10s.

No,no,no, you are completely wrong. We don't need the money and certainly haven't got the time to spend it properly if we did.
He will be fine once the window has closed. If he chooses not to play against Spurs, that's not the end of the world. He will soon buckle down once he realises it's not going to happen and then in a years time, with more money around, we will get £50 mill and then get the cover we want in our own time. Also Galloway, Browning will be a year older and wiser.
Just keep cool heads - all will work out fine.

More than decent - although he made one mistake his movement, vision and comfort on the ball was a class above everyone else. Players with REAL potential always have a little longer to look up and don't look rushed - he will be the real deal.

Sadly, I completely agree with your prognosis Glden Vision. Looking at some recent old videos - Graveson, Carsley, Cahill Arteta, all played with such energy and yet weren't all the most gifted players. I look at the present crop and I just don't see real leaders with real passion. It's like Martinez has unplugged their spark.
Barkley is the most classic example of this. He like Rodwell before him seem to come off the 'great athlete' but devoid of personality over coached breed.
A bit more spark and ingenuity throughout the club is called for - maybe Ferguson needs a greater influence.

{Ed025's Note - some good points there nick..
