Will Burnely be able to afford our money if we win our appeal in January?

The more that comes out about this Burnley situation, the more uncomfortable the whole £35m saga becomes.

Everton were ordered to pay Burnley around £35m over the PSR compensation case. We appealed it, and quite rightly, because the club believes the original decision was fundamentally flawed.

But here's the bit that really sticks in the throat.

Everton actually warned that if we paid the money and then won our appeal, there was a genuine risk Burnley might not be able to repay it.

We asked for the money to be protected while the appeal was heard. An escrow account. A bank guarantee. Something that meant our money was safe.

That request was rejected.

So Everton paid the £35m.

Now we're hearing that Velocity Capital, Burnley's parent company, has received a compulsory strike-off notice from Companies House after failing to file overdue accounts.

To be absolutely clear: this doesn't mean Burnley are bankrupt, and it doesn't mean Everton have lost £35m. Burnley's owners say they're working with Companies House, accountants and auditors to sort the situation.

But it does bring Everton's original concern straight back into the spotlight.

Because what happens if Everton win the appeal?

We should be getting our £35m back.

But what if Burnley can't afford to give it back?

Everton could potentially be left having to pursue the money legally, and if there simply isn't enough money available, recovering every penny could become a serious problem.

And then there's the question of interest.

The original award included around £9m in interest, and interest was running at 11.81%. If Everton win the appeal, whether we can claim additional interest on the £35m we've had tied up would depend on the eventual ruling and repayment order.

So this isn't just about whether Everton win or lose an appeal anymore.

It's about whether, if Everton win, we can actually get our money back — and potentially how much we're entitled to receive.

Which brings us back to the question Everton were asking in the first place:

Why wasn't that £35m protected while the appeal was being heard?

Because if Everton's original concern turns out to have been justified, we're potentially looking at a situation where the club warned about the risk, asked for protection, was refused, paid the money anyway. and then had to spend months trying to get it back.

Let's hope it never gets that far.

But you can understand why Evertonians are looking at this latest development and thinking:

"We told you this might happen.".

A proper manager would go balls out tomorrow to win that game with the draw.

29 Oct 2026 00:38:28
Hope moyes doesn't read this comment, he'll interpret it as he has permission to play for a 0-0 draw

Agree though, feels like best chance in years and you have Sunderland Drawing palace too so if get through its a 50/50 chance you draw the winner of that for the Semi.

29 Oct 2026 06:57:30
And now with the QF draw a real incentive to get to a final and win some long awaited silverware ?.

{Ed025's Note - lets see how tonight goes first Nick, its a real 50/50 game for me mate..

29 Oct 2026 09:15:12
I too hope Moyes goes balls out tonight because he will be arrested for indecency and lose his job.

29 Oct 2026 11:49:10
When we beat them in pre season George and Hackney were the best players on the pitch. Don't let us down Moyes.

{Ed025's Note - i would like to see Jimmy play Right back PB because lets be honest he has been very poor this season, and i would have Hackney and KDH in the middle, and Johnson nowhere near the squad..

29 Oct 2026 12:10:49
Can we have you in the dugout Ed?

{Ed025's Note - i will try my best PB.. :)

Just a little light in our darkness, watch first half of our under 21s, Graham, is different class, he really has got something special.

Look forward to him never getting a minute and being sold to Swansea for £3m next season.

I know people are always keen to point out that TFG, came in and stabilised the clubs financial position, and that's true, but right across the board, they have been guilty of bad faith.
If they sell at anywhere near their asking price, they will, in less than two years work, walk away with an enormous profit.
Givern the way they have conducted them selves, it doesn't seem likely, that this was always their intentions.

Plus their "stabilisation" did not see them clear the last owners debt, just turn it into a mortgage on the stadium.
However, they did manage to stump up a major contribution to Trump's realection, and for me, this shows just what sought of people they really are.

27 Oct 2026 19:13:38
Politics and football don't mix! Couldn't give two hoots who they gave money to in America in all honesty. For us and our club, they have come in and stabilised us when it looked like we were staring into the abyss and going to financially implode with the damage that FM left in his wake. For that, I wouldn't be bothered if they made a profit on us when they eventually sell up, that's business after all, mate.

I believe they came with good intentions but didn't realise how taxing owning two big clubs would be. As long as they sell on to someone who has money and patience then that will do me. One thing is certain, they leave us in a better state than when they first walked through the door.

27 Oct 2026 19:24:43
Business people pay the side that is in their best business interests.

Only thing I'm interested in with TFG is whether they back us and help us to operate as a successful club. I'm doubtful that Kinnear has been the right appointment and I was disappointed that he remained in position after the transfer debacle.

I would like the new owners, whenever we get them, to be a step up in the decision making for the club and want us to do well without putting the club at risk. I'm not wanting a Chelsea or City type owner who have cheated their way to where they are but someone who genuinely wants the club to do well, will buy into the history (if not a fan already) and allow us to operate as a club willing to buy decent players or see us compete in the league and cups. All the above without needing to sell our best players to balance the books.

Is it too much to ask?

{Ed025's Note - its not BR..

27 Oct 2026 18:40:31
There's something deeply depressing about watching Everton at the moment.

Because we seem terrified to actually go at anyone.

We play like a team whose first thought is what might happen if we lose, rather than what might happen if we actually have a go.

Where's the arrogance? Where's the aggression? Where's the belief that we can impose ourselves on another team?

Instead, we sit back, play within ourselves and wait for something to happen.
And eventually you look at it and think what is the point?

Everton Football Club cannot seriously be reduced to simply being a mid table Premier League club.

We're not building towards something that makes you desperate to see what comes next. We're not playing football that makes you think this team is going somewhere. We're just occupying a space.

Turn up. Don't take too many risks. Try not to get beaten. Move onto the next game.
And repeat.

That's not ambition. That's not progress. That's just going through the motions.
I'm not expecting us to win every week. I don't expect us to start finishing in Europe every season.
I just want to watch Everton and feel like there's something happening.

Give me a team that takes risks. Give me football that makes the opposition uncomfortable. Give me a reason to believe we're trying to become something rather than simply trying not to become nothing.

Because Everton shouldn't be a club whose ambition is measured by how safely we can get through another season.
We should be trying to matter.
And right now, I'm struggling to see what we're actually here for.

Good post OS, I agree with almost everything you've said.

However, I do disagree with the but about "at the moment". It's been a tough watch for way too long in my opinion.

We all know it starts with the manager, I just hope the next owners show some ambition and target a manager that has an identity, plays without fear and is given time to build.

{Ed025's Note - amen to that Jase..

27 Oct 2026 18:56:16
Absolutely spot on. I think as supporters we have forgotten who Everton are and what they should stand for. The motto wasn't made up by chance it was something that the club believed in, and as supporters we should expect the management and players to embrace this, and not fear failure.

{Ed025's Note - absolutely BMD..

27 Oct 2026 19:06:04
Nil Satis Nisi Optimum comes to mind mate.

27 Oct 2026 19:07:33
We are a Football Club in Transition so everyone says hmmmm.

27 Oct 2026 19:24:44
It's a bit of a mad one as we have probably created more chances in games than in previous seasons but have an absolute yard dog up front who can't finish his chances. With him being more clinical, we may have more points on the board. there's been a few dodgy decisions in games too that have hampered us.

Before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, I'm not excusing how we have played at times or team selections etc but it would look a bit more positive than it actually does now.

Moyes isn't getting sacked, they will leave him to see out his contract and then the new owners will pick their own man. Unless we get even worse in the interim, then I think that's the reality of our situation.

27 Oct 2026 19:25:37
Haven't we been in transition since Moshiri became owner GB?

27 Oct 2026 19:30:18
Yeah BR I think you are right mate bout time we came out of it I reckon mate.

27 Oct 2026 09:29:22
Well my fellow Evertonians, with 30 league games left and our threadbare squad beginning to get hit by the odd injury for me exiting the cup on Thursday could be a slight blessings in disguise ets face it we were extremely unlikely to win it so let's concentrate on trying to pick up some league points and worry about the FA cup when that tests out squad depth now I am sure my opinion will be at odds with quite a few of my fellow Evertonians but that's what's this forum is about debate so let's hear your thoughts please my fellow blues.

Football is about winning trophies if we are no longer trying to do that then why are we bothering. Their is always a possibility of winning a cup while the league is just a pipe dream.

27 Oct 2026 10:25:12
Despite a thin squad, our bench is as strong as it has been for a while, certainly some rotation is possible. I say go for it against Newcastle on Thursday, give the fans something to cheer, and then go from there.

27 Oct 2026 11:19:05
Pick a team to win. Then set them up to win. Who knows we might Win!

27 Oct 2026 13:00:01
A very good opportunity for Dibling, Hackney, Alcaraz etc etc will have a good chance of valuable playing time, I'm going for a win for us myself these second string can prove to DM what has been missing.

27 Oct 2026 13:08:30
Obviously I don't sincerely wish any ill-will on a player but maybe we get lucky and Johnson or Mykolenko get a niggle so he has no other option but to make changes to his predictable and boring 11.

27 Oct 2026 14:22:27
Yep unfortunate it's JB out, Barry seems to be super fit probably gets that from allthe walking he does mate.

27 Oct 2026 19:26:22
Got to go for the win for me, mate. Expecting to see a few changes to the team, surely Barry can't start every game?

{Ed025's Note - i think you will find he does BP..(barring injury of course)..

27 Oct 2026 20:25:21
Sad state of affairs really, ed025. Roll on January, mate.

{Ed025's Note - it really is BP. And to be honest I’m not confident of there being any improvement any time soon mate..

28 Oct 2026 09:59:36
Altidore springs to mind, Ed25, for Sunderland and Hull City. Barry, like him, did OK in foreign leagues but proved to be useless in the PL yet remained first-choice strikers here?

{Ed025's Note - the trouble is PRH is that we dont have another senior striker (if you can call Barry that), i would personally give the likes of Graham more of a shot even if its just 20 minutes here and there, but i cant see Moyes doing that mate..
