I know Rooney returning polarizes opinions amongst fans, but is it really such a bad move for us?

As a comparison, Gareth Barry is 36, and yes this season hasn't been stand out but still did a job when needed. His contribution to us since joining has been fantastic in my opinion and he illustrates that an older player is still a huge asset to have if they are good enough to affect a match. Rooney is what 31/ 32? I don't anticipate a vast number of goals from him but i can see the benefits of him being in the team. I've mentioned before the impact he can have on youth development/ mentorship. I think he is still more than capable of hitting double figures for goals, and we need need more goals throughout the team rather than mainly being reliant on a sole striker. As a free kick taker of exceptional talent, this could net a few more points over the course of a season. I see him being more of a midfielder, didn't he say a couple of years back that he sees this role as something that could keep him in the game at the top level for longer? He has good vision, passing and composure, so could open up the game and create more for attackers if used in the role. Another huge benefit has to be his love of the club and this is my big selling point. We just cannot beat Liverpool. I think the Merseyside derbies are 2 games where he will give his absolute all. His desire to help get the win in these matches of course doesn't justify the huge wages, but right now i'd give my arm to get a win over Liverpool after so long.
Also, Koeman is no fool. He seems to really want Rooney to join and i think his knowledge far exceeds any of ours. If he sees the move as beneficial, that it is an improvement, then are we really in a position to disagree?
I think maybe, even if you really don't want him to return, that we should take a more considered approach to comments about him because it's looking like a good possibility he will make the move and fostering a bad attitude towards him won't help anyone. Give him our support and hope he's a success.

Going backwards. A player who is 31 a World Cup coming up to prove himself for selection, a player who will not role over and have his belly tickled against a top 4 side, available on a free, I scratch my head in disbelief not wanting a player on a free transfer, nothing to lose and everything to gain, too early to be written off yet, he will have a point to prove which can only be good for Everton.

Literally can't get my head round people not wanting one of the greatest players to ever play the game. He has just shy of 200 premier league goals, 101 assists, Manchester Uniteds all time to scorer, Englands all time top scorer. Won everything there is at club level. Not to mention he is on a free.

Anyone who wants to argue against that, when we have the likes of Kone, Valencia, DCL on our bench, then you need to have a word with yourself.

Yes he left us, but he left us as he had ambition to win trophies an work with the biggest club in football with the biggest manager. And he went and bossed.

Now he can come back an spend his latter years getting the club who he still supports and takes his kids to the game (brings them up as blues) into the higher echelons of the league.

Not even up for discussion for me.

With you on that jmw.

26 May 2017 08:18:42
Would sign him tomorrow brill, GuernseyBlue.

26 May 2017 08:45:32
People are writing him off because he isn't getting a game a united which is absolutely ridiculous were in Europe and he has thirteen years experience in that so I think he would be the best signing for each for many years.

Totally agree with above posts. Bring him back.

26 May 2017 09:52:06
Put it this way gents, if he bags the winner in the 90th minute at their rubbish shed, kop end next season and runs full length of the pitch into our fans . all will be forgiven haha!

26 May 2017 10:47:30
I would welcome him back with open arms
He still has a heck of a lot he can offer a team, and the price ain't bad :-)

26 May 2017 11:25:52
Yes please. I'd have him all day long. Just imagine his joy at getting his first goal in a blue shirt again.

Age gives you experience, he's won a lot and knows how to do it, who have we in the squad who can offer that, Barry when at city, now 31 isn't old look at some of the great players still going in there 30s. problem with Rooney is he isn't a striker and he isn't a midfielder, he's a Barkley, now are you telling me he wouldn't add more than 4 goals over a season and create more assists, he will bring composure and know how, money shouldn't be a stumbling block and we should want players like this in our squad, other players will see what we are doing and the calibre of players we have and will then want to join us, city when they first started bought at stupid prices and payed silly wages just to get the players threw the door, now they have become successful and can get any player and and any manager they want, we need realise all the best players won't just come to us unless we can offer something exciting, yes it's coming but we need build to get there.

26 May 2017 18:01:35
Rooney would be a good stepping stone for us for the next few years and as I said in a previous post. The lad scored 15 goals Last season in a pretty poor man who side. When we sell lukaku we will be begging for a player who can get us 10-15 goals a season so to get one who isn't an out and out striker like Rooney will do very nicely.

27 May 2017 09:18:12
I think it's obvious Rooney isn't match fit. A good pre season and a run of 4 or 5 games and you'll see a different player to what we've seen recently. He hasn't had a decent run in there team for months now, but when he did (before Christmas) he still looked an influential player for them.

Bazwil212 what makes you think he is going on a free?

Ive said this before, he has 2 or so years on his contract left, do you really think united will say 'hey roo here's 25+ mil, thanks and goodbye'. They will want at least what is negotiated as a severance package for ending his contract early.

So there is anything upto 25+ mil straight away, then all other fees etc, and the 3 year 150k a week, so around 22.5+ mil for the 3 years, that's 47.5+ mil for a player that's not looking like he can cope any more with the pace of the prem. And let's remember that there will be no return on that as he will prob retire on the treatment bench.

Don't know where people get the free from, I personally don't think investing that amount in Rooney at this time in his career is worth it.
